Maybe 666 Park Avenue would be a better show if it was on cable/premium cable? I think they are restricting themselves to Network standards and can't do more..

BTW Chicago Fire is in danger of being extinguished... too bad I love Monica Raymund..

RIP Mom, we always love you 8/18/13

I guess I'm not sure what's missing on the show that basic cable could better provide.

More blood and guts doesn't make something more scary. You aren't going to get much more in the way of sex unless you go premium. I'm not sure the show would benefit from harsher language, either. You certainly aren't going to see better effects on a cable budget.

Really, what the show could use is better writing and more original ideas. That's not going to improve on cable with the same writers.

I think that too often, people think that being on cable is somhow supposed to make a show better - or that being on broadcast instead of cable will get a good show better ratings.

Is Southland a better show being on cable? It certainly was a good move to keep the show on the air, but the show was just as good before NBC axed it. It certainly isn't getting bigger ratings - just ratings good enough for TNT to continue with it.

What makes a drama good is good writing and characters you care about, for good or bad. What makes a show successful is selling it to your audience.

There's nothing magical about the channel, aside from potentially other shows the channel has leading into the show that might make people stick around.

Unfortunately, since cable channels are still beholden to advertisers, they usually end up performing self censorship so as to not lose sponsors.

Loosely speaking, the public owns the airways which the networks lease from the govt, whereas cable lines are laid and owned by private companies. Makes a big difference.

In theory, yes, but in practice, there is little difference between what is accepted on broadcast and pay TV. There is, to my knowledge, nothing stopping a basic cable channel from being as explicit as HBO, except for the fact that transmitting such content would cause the channel to lose all its advertisers. HBO gets away with that kind of thing due to its commercial-free format. The "standards" regarding what kinds of shows advertisers are willing to associate with their brands are a more important factor than the FCC's regulations in determining the types of content allowed on programs.

Even cable can only get away with so much. MTV's "Skins" lost a good share of its advertisers due to content.

At a certain point, companies don't want to be associated with a show and it becomes hard to pay the bills.

For example I hope they don't ruin "Hannibal" if the network can't show him eating/killing a person perhaps like the movies did.. or perhaps they will never go there..

There are some early reports that Emily Owens, M.D. on the CW has been canceled, but nothing official yet.

False alarm. Tvbythenumbers is saying that the earlier twitter reports are not true. Production continues and your wife can breathe a sigh of relief, for now!

Looks like the dust is settling, the shows still standing seem to have a shot at a full season.

Most reviewers think either 666 Park or Last Resort will be next.

I think Last Resort is more possible, I doubt they will really stretch that story out for more seasons, again it's like "Missing" they will make it a "mini series" and voila..

Yeah 666 is in big trouble, huge risk also being on Sunday Nights... nothing beats Football on Sunday

Especially when you have Houston at Chicago one week (two 7-1 teams) followed by Baltimore at Pittsburgh the following week (might not be as good with Roethlisberger out).

Exception - Chargers at Jets, I'm assuming that game will be flexed out. biggrin.gif

Wouldn't that make the case for keeping it on the air? If any show is going to get terrible ratings, the network might as well continue an existing one that already has some viewers than gamble on sinking money into a new show that could just as easily do even worse.

No surprise that Partners is gone. I didn't care for it the moment I saw the clip played at the CBS upfront.

What is interesting is that I had trouble with the sat reception during the playing of the clip. Must have been an omen. biggrin.gif

ABC has announced that both 666 Park Avenue and Last Resort are effectively cancelled. Apparently they will still finish their 13 episode orders though.

I guess that means I can delete the episodes I recorded (haven't watched any yet) and cancel future recordings for these.

666 Park Avenue wasn't a bad show, but it had too many soap elements and skewed too heavily female for a show that was supposed to be about horror.

A little late to the party but New Normal is a poor man's version of Modern Family. Watched about 5 mins before I turned it off.

Only shows I 'have' to watch are Modern Family, Breaking Bad, Sons of Anarchy, and Walking Dead. My wife would probably get pissed if Say Yes to the Dress got canned....

I'm not happy either. Another series I like has bitten the dust.

At least they will finish the run.

That's the trend so far. Only Made in Jersey and Partners were replaced on the schedule and Made in Jersey got a Saturday burn-off. Everything else gets their 13 episodes.
