I am catching up on season 3. I just finished watching the episode where Elizabeth managed to evade the authorities. She abandoned the car she drove with her fingerprints inside. Apparently, no one from the FBI bothered to dust the car for fingerprints. I hate it when they miss something like that.

It is very unlikely Elizabeth's fingerprints are in the FBI database; why would they be? Even if the Bureau were to find an intact print somewhere in the car, it would come up "unknown", no matches.

She has a driver license. The DMV has her fingerprints. The FBI can access DMV database. I think the show creators got a little lazy with this one. I would have liked it a lot better if they simply had her take a moment to wipe off her fingerprints.

Not every state takes fingerprints, especially back in the 80s.

Plus it would be smarter for them to fake IDs, licenses, passports.

Rather than have their real bio details in some database.

Yeah, I've had driver's licenses in four states and they never took my prints. They're not in anybody's database. Does any state actually do that, and were they doing it back in the 80's?

My first California DL had a thumb print. I don't recall when the state switched to a mugshot but it was quite awhile ago.

I got my California DL in 1960. They may have taken a thumb print at the time. I know they did later. I had a New York DL for a time as well and they had no prints at all....

You're forgetting this show takes place in 1982/1983.

There was no database back then.

The only files the FBI would have would be what they got if you applied to military service or some other government job - or actually arrested for a federal crime. Shoplifting or robbing someone? The FBI still wouldn't know you exist.

FYI was listening to Greenwald/Chris Ryan's podcast this morning. Greenwald mentioned he has seen the first episode of the upcoming season and he loves it. Keep in mind it is his favorite show on tv right now. He said it picks up right where the finale of last season left off and goes deeper with it

I don't enjoy the last season as much as the first two. There is too much family drama and that Nina time-wasting BS.

Nina's on another show as well, saw a promo for it. Can't remember which one it was, but it looked good. And she, of course, will look very good in it.

Personally, I'm looking forward to looking at more Nina this season. And so are Stan & Oleg. You know it's not going to be a happy ending for one of 'em.

It was 'The X-Files'. And it was just the first episode. Being interned in a Russian gulag is bad enough, but getting blown-up by a UFO is such an indignity.

I recently finished rewatching all 3 seasons of The Americans and found even more to like in it this time than I had the first. This time around, I found Nina's adventures in Russia extraordinarily compelling. That girl is more unlucky than any fictional character this side of Lady Edith Crawley.

Nina is a courtesan in every sense of the word but that's only because she has had to be. She did get the ball rolling by selling on the black market in order to raise money to send home to her family but after that she was a victim. She found herself trapped between the FBI and the KGB and ultimately was betrayed by both. I just hope that somehow, some way, she can get out of the spying business and just live her life.

I was also mesmerized by Paige's meltdown after she, an American girl, was told by her parents that they are Soviet spies. Brrr. Paige's confession to Pastor Tim was a big mistake, I thought, although I could hardly blame her for reaching out for help. What can I say? I share Philip's suspicions about Pastor Tim.

What makes Paige's plight even more awful is she has no idea the horrible things her parents have done, including, fraud, torture, kidnapping, and murder. Elizabeth and Philip may be presentable and loving parents but they are monsters nonetheless. How all of this plays out going forward is going to be fun to see.

What are Philip's suspicions? If it's just a general distrust of religion and so too a general distrust of those who practice it (or claim to), sure.

But I doubt it's sexual, if that's what you mean. I'd be really disappointed if this show want that route. To banal and stereotypical for a show of this quality.

There has been some chatter that Pastor Tim is with the KGB, there to either monitor the family via Paige or maybe even to spur on Paige's transition to KGB agent by challenging the family's status quo from the outside.

Based upon what we've seen thus far, including the previews, I simply think he is an earnest man of faith whose faithful representation and council to Paige offers an excellent, realistic way to bring the Jennings family dynamics and secrecy to a head.

I could see it not happening. It would destroy Paige, unless they can manage to find a way where it looks like an accident and sell their un-involvement well enough to Paige that it doesn't arouse her suspicions.

The general creed of the Communist Party is atheism. You can't be a true communist if you believe in God, therefore religion. It's that simple..... If Paige is to be a communist, like her parents, she can't believe in anything religious. If she does, she puts herself in jeopardy from mom and dad's higher ups....

I can't say precisely what it is I suspect about Pastor Tim but there's something about him I don't like. Maybe I'm being cynical, but when I look at him, I see an untrustworthy, too slick by half, bible thumper.

Not a problem .... they and their colleagues certainly have experience in this sort of thing. Paige will have to grow up very quickly now. She will realize that, even if her parents didn't participate directly in his death, the organization they serve probably did. If you tell an outsider ... you will put them at risk.

Paige,
STFU!

I always thought of him as being quite punchable. No matter his motivations, I can only envision him being cast off this island by season four’s end.

Of course, I already understood that but perhaps useful context for those who are still young enough or uneducated enough to not have known.

Philip seems to have little interest in Paige being like them. So I doubt Philip's suspicion or distrust of the Pastor has much of anything to do with a fear that the Pastor will keep Paige from being swayed to their communistic ways. Even way back in the first episode, when Philips tries to sell Elizabeth on turning themselves in, speaking about life in the USA, i.e., "what's so bad about it?". Elizabeth states her intentions for molding the minds of their children, "I'm not through with them yet", he replies with something to the effect of, "this country doesn't even turn out socialists".

In fact, I often find myself thinking that the only 2 reasons Philip still remains a communist spy is

1) out of loyalty to Elizabeth.
2) it is all he has ever known.

It's the hair.

I mean that seriously as well. Probably not an uncommon unkempt look for the times, but still not so very common for an authority figure such as a Pastor. So I do think that plays some part in the suspicion/weirdness factor.

Also possibly his calm, very gentle manner.

Mr. Rogers would be held with similar great suspicion if he came onto the scene in today, which is a sad commentary on our times I suppose.

I think the bottom line here for Philip is that he is trained to be distrustful in general and couple that with being an atheist, anyone representing themselves as a christian, especially one who is involved and influential with a member of his family, will be the a cause for suspicion.
