How 'The Americans' Solved The Eternal TV Problem Of The Surly Teen

From an NPR article, including this theory that I hadn't considered before...

"In the final scene of the season four finale, Paige and her father walk home from their FBI-agent neighbor's house, where Paige has, unbidden, engaged in a passionate makeout session with the neighbor's son.

Why she did this is left to us to decide. There seems to be a real attraction, but we're also led to believe Paige has taken it on herself to become intimate with the son as a means to gather intelligence and protect her family."

Just like Mom, using her feminine whiles to control men. Mata Hari in the making ...

Next year, she will become a lot less childlike and a lot more sexual ... if I read my unibrows correctly!

I wouldn't have thought much of it (the kissing/cuddling stuff), playing it off as mainly adolescent attraction. But when Philip offered his stern rebuke to Paige (on the way back home), I knew right then that's what he was thinking; his daughter was heading down a treacherous path.

My wife was like, I thought you said this was the season finale. I said it was, she said, did we not record enough and miss something?

Man that was a weird ending.

Oh well, I kind of hope they flip and want to become double agents, but I doubt it will happen. Not sure what their end game is with this show.

Am I the only one who expects next season to have Paige carrying Stan's grandchild? The way that scene was progressing when they started making out all I could think of was "Fast Times at Ridgemont High's" dugout scene! Only thing missing was the Jackson Browne music.....

Fresh from the HOTP thread.... This looks fun! Who knew Philip Jennings was such a foodie (winey?)...? I wonder if he'll review any Russian wine? Is there any Russian wine?

Uncork a Bottle of Chianti, Because Matthew Rhys and Matthew Goode’s The Wine Show Is Coming to Hulu

EXCLUSIVE: Rejoice, citizens of the United States, because the next best post–Downton Abbey British television import will soon be upon us. Vulture can exclusively announce that The Wine Show — hosted by the charmingly dapper Matthew Rhys and Matthew Goode, and previously only available on ITV in the U.K. — will be streaming on Hulu beginning Saturday, August 13.

While you may just be enthused about the prospect of watching the Matthews bask in the glistening Tuscan sunshine and speaking in their native accents, the series will center on the duo discovering the world’s most fascinating wines and the unique stories behind them. A hearty, swoony cheers to that!

They've been doing more tv advertising of the show it seems, in part propelled by their belated Emmy nominations.

It's quite amazing watching this show and the movie Bridges of Spies what the mood was then. Today we'd be praising Brezhnev and company.

These are just my opinions.

I liked it, but I realized just how long it has been since last season. It took me awhile to remember all of the storylines.

I was completely confused by the dead scientist. Why would they bury him? If he was dangerous, then why not cremate him?

Hans got what he deserved for what he did to that kid in a prior season (the South African storyline). As a reminder, Elizabeth had told him he was out of the spy game because his cover might have been blown. So he took it upon himself to eliminate the college student who might have seen him coming down a latter during the interrogation/killing. It was a sloppy, brutal killing of that poor kid at Hans hands.

Still, Elizabeth had liked him and it was tough on her that she had to put him down.

When I saw Philip and Elizabeth in the hole they had dug to get to William’s body, they wore only rudimentary cloth masks over their mouths and noses. This led me to think that the deadly virus that had killed William, and from whose body they had taken a sample, was not airborne. Was this just a precaution or were they being careless, given how powerful the pathogen was?

How Philip and Elizabeth knew where to dig for William’s body also puzzled me. I assume it was explained somewhere but if it was I missed it. Although Gabriel had told Philip and Elizabeth that William was at “the back of Fort Detrick,” I took it to mean he knew the general area where they had been holding him but not that he was dead and the precise location of his body.. Did Gabriel know William know all of this? If so, that was some pretty powerful spy work.

I took it as an intentional juxtaposition with the Soviet Union's poverty earlier in the episode: Philip and Elizabeth are the KGB's top operatives, and even they only get meager (and realistically, grossly inadequate) provisions for the task they must accomplish. If I were digging up the corpse of a guy killed by an infectious pathogen, I'd want a hazmat suit, but all they got is some gloves, goggles, and a face mask. Even in the US, they are at the mercy of the motherland's limited resources.

I assumed that when Gabriel was pointing to the photograph that he was indicating the exact spot they needed to dig. The image was pretty nondescript, but that spot looked darker than the rest of the ground, which might have been an indication that the dirt had recently been turned, thus revealing the burial site.

Paige had nightmares with images of the dead guy her mom killed and the solution to overcome that is learning hand combat?

If she had been bullied at school, this solution would make sense.

Anyway, I expect Paige to magically become a kick-ass fighter from now on.

Oleg's story line could be interesting.

They're in early 1984 but Glasnost and Perestroika was much later, a couple of years after Gorbachev took over after Chernenko's demise. So the show may not get to that period or the fall of the Soviet Union.

The food shortages certainly played a role into the fall.

The KGB blames corruption for the shortages and there may have been that but I think it was probably that their economy couldn't produce enough, with all the defense spending they must have been doing.

Looks like Philip and Elizabeth will look into whether US is sabotaging the grain it was selling to the USSR, as a prelude to an invasion. The Russians certainly were very paranoid.

‘The Americans’ Ratings Fall From 2016 To Lowest Season Debut Ever
By Dominic Patten, Deadline.com - Mar. 8, 2017

The return of The Americans last night on FX for its Season 5 debut has brought a chill to the Cold War set spy family drama. Now on a Tuesday for the first time at 10 PM, the Joe Weisberg and Joel Fields EP’d show hit a season debut low with 930,000 total viewers and a 0.2 rating among adults 18-49.

The 71-minute airing was down 33% in the key demo from the Season 4 opener last year and 16% in overall audience.

The March 16, 2016 Season 4 premiere was the previous low for the Matthew Rhys and Keri Russell starring show. The Wednesday debut last year snared 1.113 million viewers and an 18-49 rating of 0.3.

From her Moms perspective yes, it's the fear of not being able to defend herself or know what to do that is causing this trouble.
