I've been seeing more and more media about this series. Looks promising. I figured I would go a head and create the thread for a heads up.

'The Americans': FX Orders Cold War Spy Series Starring Keri Russell
Thursday, August 9, 2012 by the Huffington Post staff

Keri Russell is heading back to TV in FX's Cold War spy series "The Americans."

"The Americans," starring Russell, Matthew Rhys and Noah Emmerich, hails from Joe Weisberg with Graham Yost, Justin Falvey and Darryl Frank attached as executive producers. The pilot, which is scheduled to air in early 2013, will be directed by Gavin O'Connor. Production begins in October.

“For the last two years, I've worked with the incredible people at FX, FTVS, DreamWorks, and my personal television guru Graham Yost on this project," Weisberg said in a statement. "More recently, Gavin O'Connor joined our team, and turned the script we'd been working on for so long into a beautiful pilot. Keri Russell, Matthew Rhys, Noah Emmerich, and Max Hernandez were sensational in it, and a joy to be around. To have all of this come to fruition has been indescribably exciting. Really, I'm a writer, and I can't describe it. It's a great privilege and opportunity to get to make this television show. I can't wait to get to work on it."

The new series is a period drama about the marriage of KGB spies posing as Americans in suburban Washington DC. Set during the Reagan presidency, the show follows Phillip (Rhys) and Elizabeth Jennings (Russell), two spies who are in an arranged marriage. The couple have two children who know nothing about their parents true identity. Phillip and Elizabeth must balance their relationship, along with the network of spies and informants that are under their control. Emmerich will play an FBI agent -- and new neighbor -- who works in counter intelligence. The first season will be 13 episodes.

“We're proud to welcome 'The Americans,' a taut series that crackles with incredible performances rooted in character perspectives never explored on a U.S. television series, to FX's line up of quality dramas,” John Landgraf, president of FX, said in a statement. "We're equally excited to welcome Graham Yost’s talented young Padawan Joe Weisberg as creator/showrunner. He joins a long line of gifted writer/producers who have taken their first shot at greatness on FX.”

You can watch "The American" on FX in early 2013. I will keep this thread updated.

I will edit-in the official web-site for the series once it's available. For the mean time I can provide the IMDB link.

This one is already on my list. It looks interesting (I wonder if the creators were watching Salt before they came up with it?) and it's on FX. They rarely disappoint.

I just hope it sticks to being a thriller and doesn't get too soapy.

I think this is going to debut about the same time as the 4th season of Justified. I wonder if they'll run back-to-back on tuesdays, or a tuesday-wednesday combination.

All good to go here.

I've had a season pass setup for The Americans for sometime but thanks to a rave review by Andy Greenwald, which I read on Grantland today, I have my game face on for tonight's pilot. The Americans has a chance to be really good, Greenwald calls it "The best new show since Homeland." If The Americans even comes close to being as good as Homeland, I'm sure I'll love it.

lonwolf615 01-30-2013 08:38 PM

Wow. Its a nice feeling, having high hopes for a new show, and then having it exceed expectations. This is going to be fun.

Young C 01-30-2013 08:38 PM

That was really good. The ending was nerve-whacking. I'm tuned in for next week as well.

WilliamR 01-31-2013 05:01 AM

Will definitely continue to watch to see where this goes.

MSmith83 01-31-2013 05:13 AM

There is definitely a lot of potential. So far it seems that FX has another winner on its hands.

Thankfully, they already burned through the obligatory use of Phil Collins' "In the Air Tonight." No show's use of that song will ever come close to matching its placement in the Miami Vice pilot episode.

Ph8te 01-31-2013 05:24 AM

Not bad, not so sure it compares to Homeland besides having strong female lead.....Ill give this show a chance though as I faith in FX....

Young C 01-31-2013 05:55 AM

John Landgraf and FX are top notch. FX always puts out great programming biggrin.gif

RemyM 01-31-2013 05:59 AM

I'm hooked!

daryl zero 01-31-2013 06:05 AM

I'm not as stoked as you are all. All I can think of is that this is exactly the type of show that would have been a comedy 30 years ago.

Young C 01-31-2013 06:32 AM

One of the only letdowns is it's on cable so the mature level is limited. You do not see a bunch of T&A, bloody violence, and curse words. If this show was on Showtime, Cinemax, or HBO I'm sure you'd see breasts in the first or 2nd episode tongue.gif

FX is known for their mature shows though. All-good in my book.

UGAd13 01-31-2013 07:00 AM

I thought it was pretty good – having been born in the early 80s the Cold War/KGB is a little foreign to me but still rather intriguing. Similar to SOA I found myself pulling for the “bad guys” - the main characters over the FBI agent neighbor. I think it that’s why I liked it. It’s different from your average good guy/bad guy show. It’ll make it on the DVR for sure but I just don’t have the time to get invested into another show right now unless it’s on par with Justified/SOA/Walking Dead/Breaking Bad.

Random Thoughts:
Keri Russell looks great! It may take a few episodes for me to believe Matthew Rhys character is a bad a$$ Russian spy. My wife used to watch Brothers & Sisters…

StonesCat 01-31-2013 07:41 AM

Got a good laugh out of the Juice Newton line dancing. That year is one of the first I can really remember as a kid, and that song was played alot.

THanksfully I dont need T&A or whatever to get me to like a show.......I loved Fringe and Rubicon and those had neither...Of course on these forums it sems to be dominated by those who want more and more of that lol...

Flambe 01-31-2013 09:54 AM

I liked the pilot. Glad to see they're willing to let a little profanity slip through the filters - all in all I thought it was a well-executed pilot.

mikeewing 01-31-2013 10:16 AM

I thought I saw a little of Keri's nip in the beginning?

eek.gif I did not take notice.

Did anybody else notice that the "viewer discretion is advised" screen was off?

Personally, I was hoping for something a lot smarter. We'll see...

They did have the TV-MA rating in the beginning along with every letter they could find in the alphabet. i don't remember if they actually said "Viewer discretion is advised" but I know Fox/FX loves to say that as a badge of honor.
