I suspect that the haze we saw was smog, which seems to exist in all large metropolitan areas in the third world. Mexico City is Exhibit A for the phenomenon and I imagine something similar happens in big Indian cities.

It's important to remember this country had the very same problem back in the 60s.
I lived in L.A. then, and have a lot of stories and memories from that era and place.

Extreme air pollution, and pollution in general, is one of the growing pains of modern industrialization.
Eventually, this will become a part of the past, as it has here to a large extent.

Google search reveals New Delhi is "Recently considered one of the most polluted cities in the world, more so than Beijing".Good thing F1 passing on India next year, let the haze clear and bring more efficient cars in '15.Maybe by that time they will have hybrid cargo jets to haul the "cleaner" cars around to tracks that have 100 spectators over the three day weekend.

(just piggy smile.gif backing your post here Oink)

The LA basin is predisposed to smog. It earned the moniker "Valley of the Smoke" by the people that lived here before. Yes I sound like Cliff Clavin. Sorry

The inversion layer is like a shower cap. I remember back in those bad days that it actually hurt to breathe deeply. It's so much better now it's amazing.

If you are ever driving behind like an old 1970s pickup and think to yourself "gad that stinks", imagine the other five million cars around you are emitting the same crap into an already hazy valley with fairly good sized mountains to keep it all in.

We started doing something about this in the mid-late sixties. There's no excuse for these countries to have this problem today other than greed. If the sky over there looks like that, imagine what the soil and water look like.

The smog there is terrible, beyond belief, how do the people breath???

Also they say there are disease-carrying mosquitoes all over the place.

Seb said he is afraid to eat the food or drink the water, one driver said he had to dodge a cow on a road, and so on.

Geez, what a place!!! Bet they will all be so happy to be in Austin for the US Grand Prix!!!

Tires look cruddy again (soft), maybe it will be a little better as rubber is laid down by racetime. I wish they would develop great tires that would not degenerate and would allow the drivers to go all out all the time. Just have mandatory tire changes.

Seb looks like he is certainly the class of the field, and unless he has a mechanical failure or someone runs into him, this race is his and the championship is over.

They showed how the new tires they put in at the midway point are stiffer and why they helped Red Bull with the aerodynamics, the extra stiffness in the sidewalls is really helping the design of Red Bull. Man, Sauber and Force India switched, one was good and one wasnt before the tire switch, and they reversed afterwards.

I saw a study the other day on the news that said that air pollution today in many U.S. cities is more harmful than second hand cigarette smoke.

I agree...it's hard to believe how much the air has been cleaned up.
It wasn't until the Feds and The State stepped in that things were changed in S.C.

Most of these countries don't have the govt. control necessary to make changes.

I would like to see tires that don't create "klag."
Klag makes passing damn near impossible most of the time.

Ewww...Williams loses a lug nut on track. That'll cost 'em.
I would love to see Ferrari do 3 stops and just haul ass the whole race. Start on Mediums since they will probably suck in quali anyway. Hopefully that would give them the lead when everyone else pits. Then go Soft Soft Soft. While everyone else is conserving their tires they can just fly.
They would have to save a pair of Soft from quali but it sure would make things interesting.

Well...Ferrari did indeed qualify on Mediums. But unfortunately so did a lot of others. Most notably Webber. And Alonso did 2 hot laps and did not improve so he has more wear than was necessary.
Massa outqualifies Alonso for the 4th race in a row.

Massa was on option tires.

Drivers in top ten who qualified on primes were WEB, ALO, PER, BUT.

Thanks for the clarification. So Ferrari and Red Bull both have a car each on different tires. Should be interesting.

Except for the few F1 races FOX used to carry, F1 hasn't really had much of a presence on broadcast TV in many years. I doubt that will change either, since there is such low interest for it in the U.S.

My wife and I decided not to attend F1 at Austin anytime soon, mostly due to the price gouging/cost of attending. We are planning to attend the WEC race next year at COTA instead.
