In the early '90's, my neighbor was a mechanic at Galles Racing. These were the guys that Al Unser Jr. was driving for when he got his first Indy 500 win. At the time, Eddie Lawson (former bike racer/champion) was driving their car. Long story short, I got a tour of the shop, and my bud asked if I wanted to sit in the car. At the time, I was in my early 30's, 5"11", maybe 180 lbs. I am not built like a jockey, but I was a long way from over weight. The damn seat in that car seemed to be about half the width required for me to slide my butt into that car. They did not have time to create a form fitting seat to the contours of MY BUTT :-) so that was that. Personally, I think it was a set-up, and they knew I would not fit, but it was good for a laugh.
So, drivers being built like jockeys is not really a new development. I think I recall Robby Gordon pissing and moaning when Danica came to Indy the first time because he had probably 90 pounds on her. I am curious to see how many pounds JP Montoya can lose before the start of the 2014 Indycar season.
As for F1 and without spilling any beans, some interesting results from FP1, of course, who knows what program each team was running..
