What gets me is just how on earth did they think they could get away with it?

Maybe they figured they were going nowhere with their cars grinding the tires off.

So take a bold chance and maybe with a little leniency, at years end , the results are better than they would've been.

Just a wag

Calling Mercedes' actions "blatant" may understate the case. I think the Mercedes people's big miscalculation was in thinking they could keep the tests secret. I became satisfied of that when I saw that they had Hamilton and Rosberg wear plain helmets rather that their own during the tests. The team's excuse offered at the hearing, that the plain helmets were to protect the drivers from fans, was less than lame. Come on, I may have been born at night but it wasn't last night.

McLaren didn't actually steal them, they were handed over to a McLaern employee from a disgruntled Ferrari employee. Not saying it was right either way.

Thats an awful lot of trouble to go through when they are going to be looked at as cheaters and their rep is going to take a big hit if they get caught. No. I think that for some odd reason they expected to get away with it.

Exactly.

Apparently, MB made every attempt to hide what they were doing.
Of course, as you know, it's always the cover-up that kills ya.wink.gif

IIRC, the real "crime" was McLaren DIDN'T report the situation immediately to the FIA (as they were supposed to).
It gave the impression they had every intent to (and did) use the information in the design of their cars.
AND that was what caused the big fine and Ron Dennis' "retirement" as Team Principal.

Thank God the IndyCar Iowa Corn Indy 250 is on ABC this Sunday. The pq and sq on NBCSpt is terrible for me in comparison. Still very disappointed that F1 moved from Speed to NBCSpt.

The results are in. Wow!
Mercedes had no intention of obtaining an unfair advantage and thought they had the full approval of the FIA for the test.
So as long as you think youre doing the right thing it doesnt matter whether or not you actually are.

I just don't understand the lack of a real penalty here.

Essentially, they are saying Charley Whiting is responsible (or not) for what happened.
REALLY?
Come on now!

This is a total whitewash.
I'll be very interested in seeing what our boys in the booth (and Will) have to say about this.

I was expecting something worse. I guess this was the FIAs way of saying we really need you two to stick around. Without Mercedes and Pirelli, F1 would be two engines and no tires or a slightly better version of the IRL.smile.gif

Oh and on the McLaren spygate, I should point out I got one more thing out of it that most didn't. Alonso may be a great driver, but I think it is debatable what kind of person he is. He was willing to blackmail Ron Dennis with the info he had to get what he wanted. I realize in the hifalutin world of F1 they don't do this, but I would have taken his worthless rear end out back and beat the crap out of him.

My new favorite game is Save The Titanic

Apparently, if you're Mercedes, with every illegal tire test you order you get a shiny Monaco GP trophy AT NO EXTRA CHARGE !

As FIA race director Charlie Whiting says,
