But why they eliminated the fuel issue completely? having to stop for fuel and fuel+tires was another drama feature (hoses get stuck, you go out of fuel, etc)

RIP Mom, we always love you 8/18/13

Of course, not to the point they explode on track.

I would like to see fast-degrading tires that DOESN'T leave klag all over the racetrack.
Klag narrows the track width and makes passing much more difficult.

Agreed, on both accounts.

While I completely understand the driver's and team's frustration with tires that don't last, it definitely makes for more exciting races for the fans. Otherwise, it is just a fast paced parade.

However, if I was a driver, I would complain to no end about the crap tires! biggrin.gif

IIRC, it was a safety issue. After a few guys ripped the refueling hoses out and smacked pit crew members with them as they drove away.

I think the KERS played into the issue as well. I remember in the early stages, the drivers would have to jump from the car to the ground to prevent a charge or spark from occurring.

There is no reason to jeopardize the safety of the crews with flying fuel at a racing event IMO.

There's too many people on the pit crew IMO.... this is one of the luxuries F1 has over any other racing series, more people there the more risk to injure someone

Looks like we will see a change in tire this weekend:

Pirelli has confirmed that it will use the Canada development rear tires in Germany this weekend, with Kevlar belts - and says that a new range will be introduced in Hungary following the Silverstone test later this month, in effect combining the 2012 structures and 2013 compounds.

Meanwhile its investigations has shown that left-to-right rear tire swapping, as explained on SPEED.com some weeks ago, was one of the factors at Silverstone. Previously Pirelli had not been concerned about teams using that tactic to gain performance.

It also says that teams were running excessively low pressures and extreme cambers, and adds that the Silverstone kerbs were another factor. It says that its tires are perfectly safe if operated correctly, noting: “In line with what the company always claimed the range of tires, 2013, if used correctly, does not jeopardize the safety of drivers, and has all the safety features required by the FIA.”

Pirelli wants the FIA to regulate pressures and cambers in the future, the latter having been in the news at Spa in 2011 when Red Bull was deemed to be pushing the limits.

For the German GP only, asymmetrical tires will still be used, and Pirelli says teams will not be allowed to swap side-to-side. From Hungary onwards it won't be an issue, as the new type will be symmetrical.

Pirelli's Paul Hembery said: “What happened at Silverstone was completely unexpected and it was the first time that anything like this has ever occurred in more than a century of Pirelli in motorsport. These incidents, which have upset us greatly, have stressed the urgency of the changes that we already suggested – which will be introduced during for free practice in Germany on Friday.

“We would like to acknowledge the willingness of the FIA, FOM teams, and drivers to act quickly to find an immediate solution to the problem. In particular, the adoption of winter tests, arranged with the FIA, that are more suitable for tire development and the possibility of carrying out in-season testing will contribute to the realization of tires with increasingly improved standards of safety and performance.

“I’d like to re-emphasize the fact that the 2013 range of tires, used in the correct way, is completely safe. What happened at Silverstone though has led us to ask for full access to real time tire data to ensure the correct usage and development of tires that have the sophistication we were asked to provide and extremely high performance that has lowered lap times by more than two seconds on average. While we wait for a change in the rules, we will introduce tires that are easier to manage

Not being a tire engineer, from my chair it sure looks like Pirelli is putting all of the blame on the teams and the kerbs at Silverstone.

I eagerly await the response from Merc, McLaren, Sauber, Ferrari, and TR.

More tire info.http://www.racecar-engineering.com/blogs/gravel-trap-tyre-thoeries/. looks like Pirelli, not the teams will decide the winner this year.Hopefully we will see a German GP and not repeat Indy '05.Long layoff till next race,I hope Pirelli get their act together.

Are we looking at another race that has to be watched on CNBC if we want to see it live? If so, does anyone know what time it starts, EST? My guide on the tv does not show it.

Yeah, good one. I'm surprised they didn't mention the suspension and tire pressure adjustments - things would be fine if those darned engineers would stop mucking about with the cars.

This was all discussed back in March, with schedules posted and CNBC noted. Trusting NBC to do the right thing would be the mistake here me thinks. More work for us, but it is possible to keep up smile.gif Not that we should have to, but, you know, modern world and all ...

It's been on my guide for days btw - directv.

True.

Hopefully, they won't screw it up like ABC did with ALMS.
Essentially, the good folks at ABC sunk the series as a viable broadcast asset.
I still can't believe the dummies in control of ALMS agreed to a contract with ABC that allowed delayed and truncated broadcasts.mad.gif
Talk about suicide....rolleyes.gif

ALMS was sunk before they did that awful deal. They were desperate to get more viewers and all they did was piss off the loyal fans.

Well, that would be something.....

I wonder how many drivers would actually park their cars if there were new tire explosions. Are they truly unanimous in the threat to boycott?

I used to think that you can't sell Americans on road racing. Now I think it's just that television doesn't know how to package it into a program, like they do other sports. Which is good I guess, keeps them from ruining it, but bad if you want to see some on tv.

I'm supposed to be Austrian and Russian, second generation born on both sides, but I'm starting to think I might really be Norwegian. I can sit for hours and watch something like Le Mans, and find it refreshing that they think so little of it as a broadcast that they basically leave it alone, pit dorks notwithstanding.

They'll be using tires similar to Canadian GP spec, so I think they'll be OK.

Another reason, IMO, is the confusing number of classes....you end up with a situation where almost everyone gets a spot on some podium somewhere.rolleyes.gif

Here is the entry list for this Saturday's race:

Only two cars in LMP1.

It didn't help that ALMS was too afraid to reign in Audi with their out of control spending on LMP1. It made the class out of reach for privateers. Even Peugeot couldn't sustain the $500M budget to develop and field a world class LMP1 competitive with Audi. I love the Audi LMP1 cars, but they did effectively kill the class. Trying killed Peugeot's race programs entirely. There's a reason LMP1 is gone from the new series.

IndyCar is back at Pocono for the first time since 1989. They have already broken the track speed records. 220.963 in practice.

The GP2 race is on NBCSpt Sunday at 2p EST.

Well, at least the tires stayed together today. rolleyes.gif

Should be an interesting race tomorrow. It looks like Merc, RB, Lotus and Ferrari have good pace. Congrats to Hamilton. I can't even imagine how pissed Rosberg is!

I sure hope Ferrari's tire gamble pays off.

Could be as many as 4 cars on primes for the race? Both Ferrari, Jenson and maybe Nico ... Nico on primes could be very interesting.

Wouldnt Nico have to start from the pits to start on Primes? He qualified on Softs.
