“Banshee” on Cinemax: Drama! Romance! Suspense! Sex! Action! … Amish?
Wednesday, December 26, 2012 by Ryan R. channelguidemagblog.com

Quote:
“Banshee” on Cinemax is a new action drama series following the world of crime and corruption stewing under the seemingly idyllic surface of rural Pennsylvania Amish town Banshee.
“I spent 15 years picturing this day, and I got to tell you, this is not how I saw it playing out,” Lucas Hood (Antony Starr) tells his ex-lover — understating things just a little bit — in the new Cinemax action drama Banshee, premiering Friday, Jan. 11, at 10pm ET/PT.

Immediately upon his release from state prison, Lucas has a busy day that would tucker out any ex-con. He hits a bar, steals a car, gets in a chase and shootout in Manhattan, boosts a motorcycle, stalks his ex-lover in a rural Pennsylvania Dutch town, and kills two guys in a bar fight. Oh, and by nightfall, he’s the town’s sheriff.

The premise of the show — executive produced by Alan Ball (Six Feet Under, True Blood) — may seem a little preposterous and over-the-top, but that’s what makes it incredibly engrossing and a lot of fun. Like its Cinemax series brethren Strike Back and Hunted, Banshee is a serious drama that smartly doesn’t take itself too seriously. “You have to buy into the heightened reality of the show,” Starr says. “One of the great things about the show is that when we have very serious moments, that we have just a pinch of something else, a pinch of color, just to remind us that it’s not real. We are existing in this heightened universe.”

The Banshee universe is a surreal, sleazy stew of ex-cons, techie drag queens, politicians, corrupt businessmen, drug dealers, Ukrainian gangsters, rebellious teenagers and local yokels — all with their own secrets and agendas. And yes, there are Amish.

“You can’t turn the corner at the moment without seeing something about Amish,” Starr says. “They’re so hot right now. It’s amazing. Every time I turn on the TV, there’s another reality show about Amish.” (Irony!) But Banshee isn’t just jumping on the trend buggy. The Amish country backdrop adds rich layers to the story. “There are a lot of bad people in the town of Banshee, and having this idyllic Pennsylvania, sort of pristine ideas that run along with the Amish ideology, is a backdrop for the criminal enterprises that are going on, the bad people that are around,” Star says. “It’s a stark contrast for the world. It really creates a landscape where there’s true good and true evil and they’re really polarized next to each other.”

The Amish would definitely shun Banshee for all the sex scenes (it’s Cinemax, after all). Ivana Milicevic (Casino Royale), plays Carrie, Lucas’ past partner in crime and in bed who has reinvented herself as a wife and mother while hiding from the gangsters she and Lucas betrayed years ago. Milicevic, a former model and Bond girl, has plenty of steamy screen time in Banshee. “As for sex scenes, I’m sure everyone you’ve ever asked always tells you the same thing: They are awkward and ridiculous,” she says. “Everything about them is embarrassing and a funny story. Although, the cool thing was is that we really wanted the sex scenes to kind of be natural and real. I really wanted them to be like, ‘If we’re going to do them, let’s kind of do it.’ I mean not do it do it, but I wanted it to be natural,” she says. “It’s just the whole thing is really funny. And it’s got nothing to do with sexiness or anything. You just kind of do it. And the cast and crew were all so close, it was pretty comfortable considering how awkward the whole thing is. And then you just kind of get used to it.”

The Series Premier is tonight. We'll see how it goes. I was impressed with Strike Back but Hunted did not allure to me.

I enjoyed the premier too. At the beginning though I was a bit concerned with Antony Starr's mouth. I kept wondering whether he had a mouthful of marbles.

Was wondering what was up with his mouth too. Has promise thought the fight scenes were weak. Will definitely give it a few more episodes see if holds up.

This isn't exactly Dexter or Breaking Bad, but I'll watch more episodes. It could turn into something with the depth and plausibility issues of Burn Notice, but with swearing and nudity. biggrin.gif

Gotta suspend some disbelief on him so easily assuming the dead sheriff's identity, even with his hacker buddy altering records for him.

The ex-lover lied about her daughter's age, so I'm going to assume she'll turn out to be Hood's daughter, too.

I actually liked that they went to the trouble of altering records, etc. The easy way would have them just trust who he was, as they have never seen him before - and there was no chance of the "real" sheriff showing up. wink.gif

The series is holding my interest so far.

Wow. That part with the steak eating zoom-in was creepy. Showing him as a very sinister man.

The rave scene was scary, people overdosing left and right. I'm sure that sometimes happens in real life frown.gif

Good episode.

wow! Awesome stuff eek.gif

I never knew Kai's personal assistant got his hands dirty.

Did Carrie whisper into the crime lord's ear "father"? Guess I could re-watch that part to be sure. Would be weird if she stole the diamonds from her dad.

That fighter was despicable. I'm glad Sheriff Hood took care of him. That fight was brutal, I actually said out loud "Damn!" a few times. When Hood broke his bones.

Most of the sex scenes are always odd. Not sure if they happen or if it's all a "dream". They split it, in a way. Always nice to see some T&A too biggrin.gif

10/10 episode. I really enjoyed it. Looking forward to next week already.

Edit: All that drinking. I want to drink tongue.gif

We are loving the show so far and are fairly immune to violence but that rape scene was almost too much, however, it did redeem itself with the beatdown the fighter took.

Doesn't that say soooo much about American mores. smile.gif

Personally I found them over-the-top and too graphic for my taste.

The first episode was over the top and too graphic with violence. This isn't "Hunted" or "Strike Back." It's an American show, so more violence is ok. (Slightly) More sex seems to be ok, too. My wife and I don't consider that to be a bad thing. biggrin.gif

Despite the violence, the plot line is still weird (though quite unbelievable at times).

I got about half way through the second episode and realized I didn't care about any of the characters, or what happens to them, so I punted. Same old stuff, different show.

Same happened to me.  I initially set up the series based on early expectations and Strike Back on Cinemax, but 1/2 way into episode #2 I just completely lost interest.

His where abouts aren't going to be secret much longer once that video goes viral. Too much of a stretch to believe that the Russian crime boss can't find his own daughter in fifteen years of looking and this guy gets out of jail and is with her in five minutes. What no one recognized the oriental hairdresser when he wore a wig? Going to be interesting to see how far they take the fight first ask questions later bit that Sheriff Hood has adopted. Have a feeling the video is going to have long range repercussions.

I haven't completely given up on the show yet, but the fact that he's going around beating people up in front of witnesses just stretches credibility. At least the other cop mentioned that it's not ok to punch someone in cuffs. I'm hoping they have a plan here, and explain it soon. Not sure I can stand a whole season, but I'll give it a few more episodes to make up my mind.

How much input does alan ball have with this show other than as one of the producers? He used to write a lot of the True Blood eps. Nothing so far here. I know we have to suspend our disbelief on virtually every show on tv but this show is really starting to stretch the coincidences to the breaking point imo. glad that it got renewed at least we are not going to be left hanging.

The cell phone video clip did not go viral yet I guess. It was sort of silly for Hood to do another job, especially when he had a shoot out with the local police. Wouldn't his face be posted on the news, and other police stations? Possibly his own police station would see his face on TV.

So much sex! eek.gif lol
I'm starting to have a crush on Carrie Hopewell played by Ivana Milicevic. That masturbation scene in the bathtub biggrin.gif

It was silly of Carrie to drive away rather than go upstairs as she saw another women leaving Hood's place. She has a husband and just had sex with him, I would think it would be OK for Hood to fool around with women. Both of their flash backs though, you can definitely tell they still have a thing for each other.

Good episode tonight.
