Agreed.
No way the heir would have survived.
In fact, after the King, he would have been the first of the family killed.

I didn't see the other one, but I respect your stand on coming out. Casper has long represented those who travel the Hershey Highway. A brave move oink...biggrin.gif

Yes. That's how it worked then. Kill the current Earl and you become the Earl. Kill the current King and you become the King.

Also, from the interview with the creator of the show:

In the final image of the season, we see Ragnar sitting on that lofty place. Does that mean he’s now king?

He is king.

I'm guessing that the son's fate and that of Rollo (we know he'll be alive) are hooks the producers hope will keep us curious til next year. I suspect they'll use the son then execute him.

That final scene of Rags sitting up there on that cliff with the King's sword mirrors the shot of Ah-nuld becoming "Conan the King" at the end of the first Conan movie. Heavy bears the head that wears the crown.

I get the feeling the boy will be pardoned and will eventually come back to bite the Lothbroks on the arse.

vs. being glory-holed?

I kid...but, I'm not complaining about the writing or direction of the series. Still enjoying it, because what are the alternatives? We've got period drama's springing up all over the place, mostly soap with no substance. This one feels real. You might quibble about military strategy or writer's (Hirst's) choices, but, all in all, this is the best depiction I've seen of Viking life outside of very good literature and my own imagination. None can know how real it is, but it feels authentic....barring Vikings wearing no helmets so the actors can emote biggrin.gif

The only real unknowable is exactly what Vikes thought regarding the world around them.
In other words, the "why."
The "what" and "how" has been pretty much nailed down by science.

Pretty simple in this show: Klingons without warp drive. tongue.gif

They conquer and pillage because their entire culture revolved around it. Even their theology reinforced their violent lifestyle. Their militant and muscular gods were created and shaped to justify the nasty stuff they did, not just to their enemies, but to each other.

A lot of northern Europe had become heavily Christianized, with not much violence from abroad in recent memory, with only the typical petty squabbles between neighboring kingdoms.
And because of a certain amount of sheepleness had crept in among the population, an unknown people with strange languages and customs from across the mighty barrier of the North Sea shocked the populace and PTB.
Of course, this all changed in a couple centuries when the Church managed to tame the savage beasts; it had worked so well the Pope felt confident to declare the First Crusade in 1095, which emptied Europe of many of its best warriors.

Actually only a small part of the society were doing the pillaging. Most were farmers, traders, fishermen etc.
