I left them at Deadwood and came back for GoT and left again after season 1 of that. I should like the show, as it in my wheelhouse, but it was just too boring. Krull is superior IMHO. smile.gif

No doubt. I resubbed HBO to watch it. It wasn't for me is all. I don't go around trashing it or people who do like it thought. I like my fantasy to be more fantastic is all. GoT felt more like all political machinations and that's fine if you like it.

So, given that, you prefer 'Vikings' to GoT? confused.gif

Heck, only one of 'em's got dragons.

Not really. Dune had giant worms that dudes rode across the desert AND political machinations. Fantastic stuff. Not sure what is so hard to grasp. GoT is not for me. You will survive this knowledge.

Like many others here, I have been enjoying Vikings but, and trust me on this, it is no Game of Thrones. I just finished rewatching season 2 of Game of Thrones and was even more blown away than I had been when I saw it first run last year. It is a dense story, so to get the most out of it, it's necessary to pay strict attention. Often, important parts of the story are told in a line or two, or a single image. I was amazed at how much good stuff I picked up this time through that I had missed when I watched last year, despite having already read the A Song of Ice and Fire series of books by then. To be fair, I agree that Vikings is off to a good start but it's going to have to be wonderful indeed for a couple of seasons before I will consider placing it in a class with Game of Thrones.

Here is a copy of my review: Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
Just got done with the novel.
This book is easily identifiable as a Frank Herbert work.

High Opps is a very interesting warm-up to Dune.
No off-world storytelling here, everything takes place on Earth.

As always, Herbert displays an uncanny ability to get at the core of human psychology and systems.
His vision of a society guided by electronic opinion polls is chilling....and prescient.wink.gif

Many ideas in Dune seem to have had their genesis in this book.
For example, a great, but complicated leader evolves from ordinary roots to lead a movement that topples an oppressive regime.
It is easy to see Paul Atriedes in the protagonist here.

On its own, this book works as sci-fi and I think it is a fine read.
Of course, YMMV.

I'm ok if it never gets in a class with GoT. If they finish the story (Vikings) that'll be an achievement.

Vikings is just getting started. I imagine that this first season covers Ragnar's ascent as a local chieftain replacing Gabe Byrne. Future seasons if any will start chroniculing his gathering of power and the big raids with hundreds of ships, sacking and ransoming Paris for 7000lbs of silver, etc.

I don't lurk as much as I used to and I NEVER listen. Comes from being old and cynical.

Wonder if they'll cover the mighty Vikes repeatedly getting their invading arsses kicked out of North America by the American Indians for hundreds of years? Something the history books rarely mention.

They had to colonize Iceland first and that hadn't happened yet. Then when they found Greenland, Canadian coast and finally New England, trying to establish colonies with 1500 mile supply lines just wasn't in the cards. It's not like they could conquer an established agricultural base either. Pretty much every early colonial attempt on the NA landmass failed early on except the equitorial islands where food supply wasn't as big a problem. When the Spanish discovered gold, it was over. Had the Vikings done it, there would have been 1000 ships coming and we'd be ruled by pirates (if we're not already).

Don't bet on it. The only reason the Europeans were able to get a foothold in the new world was because the Native Americans were virtually wiped out - I mean seriously decimated - by European diseases. They had lost like 70% of their population by the time the English, French, and Spanish started pushing in with large numbers of "illegal immigrants". If the Indians had been at full strength, it might have been too expensive both in treasure and blood to make a full push for colonization. They might have opted for peaceful trade routes instead. We'll never know.

The Iceland/Greenland immigration was relatively small potatoes in terms of the total Viking populations in Scandinavia.
As it was, they operated more as outcasts than anything else.

However, if real treasure had been found, my guess is the word would have leaked back to the Homelands and then we would have had those "1000 ships."
BTW, great joke.biggrin.gif

True.

It is interesting to think about though....
The natives were not ignorant of aggression/violence by any stretch; it was a part of their history and life.
Since Vikings usually tried to steal before deciding to use discretion, there probably would have been serious blows thrown.
Who knows how that would have turned out?

Guess there was not enough close and personal contact for the Vikes to infect the Native American population. Or maybe the English were more germ infested. Lots of chapters of this history remain to be discovered. DNA will help.

Here is something about the Viking settlement in North America:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L%27Anse_aux_Meadows

There has been a renaissance of research into the history of the Vikings.
Over the last few years a lot of new stuff has been posted on the web by researchers, and with it a new understanding of who and what their motivations were is upending the traditional view of savage mindless brutes.

great episode last night. liked the shield wall scene. and how portrayed the wall was fluid hooking ppl with axes and pulling behind wall to kill and occasionally going out. they really would probally have helms but i get why they dont have them on, no one would be noticable.

Sheild walls were pretty much how they did it back then and that was a great depiction. You're right about the helmets too. I'm pretty sure even the poor Vikings went to battle with at least leather helms...and I'm pretty sure they would think going into battle without one would be crazy.
