WABC-DT NYC FiOS TV

Just checking out the show now and some observations.

Seth MacFarlane has a Lavalier mic and there is still a lot of echo when he is talking.

On the current segment with the five actors on the screen there is not enough lighting on Robert Downey Jr. and Samuel L. Jackson who are on the left and right sides.
Also the audio at times is sounding distorted when they get to loud.
They did something smart in using Lavalier mics for those farthest away from the mic.

The last award winner just cut off by the "Jaws" shark theme.

Watching here in the UK on Sky Movies (1080/50i).

Picture quality is quite soft compared to the Sky studio in London that is providing the 'wraparound' content that fills the gaps between a UK ad-break length and a US ad-break length.

Are the Oscars being broadcasted in Dolby Digital? Because they're in stereo for me.

The audio is DD 5.1 with people speaking in the center channel and the music in the L & R channels.
Musical performances however are only stereo.

For the first time the Grammys had DD 5.1 audio for everything this year.

Pretty sure Paul is mixing in 5.1. Oscars has been 5.1 since 2003. That being said vocals during music numbers sound odd. Something strange going on in that Les Mis thing. PQ is exceptional as usual.

Though ABC's screen spam has gotten worse every season since they started keeping their logo on all the time 15 years ago, the Oscars are once again presented BUG-FREE! Shows that enough people in the industry must hate this practice (probably the only thing left on broadcast TV they actually have to watch), but why do they continue to be silent about every other show? What has ABC or anyone else GAINED from ruining the picture for more than 15 years???

Very much so. At least here OTA (KGO-ABC). However, the vocals on the Academy nominated songs seems to be a bit "soft". Maybe they haven't quite got the Dolby Atmos mixed quite right for broadcast.

They had no clue what movie was going to win best picture when that was set up.

Why? Zero Dark Thirty would have been more appropriate.

By the time the coverage reached us in stereo. Not sure if it was the mixdown from 5.1 - but Adele's vocal disappeared a bit under the orchestra at times - felt like some of the orchestral dynamics were compressing Adele down in the mix?

That said, she did a fantastic job - vocal performance of the night for me. (Though was impressed by the Les Mis number as well)

Catherine Zeta-Jones was dreadful with here terrible lip-synced performance. Seth was pretty much what I expected - not great, not terrible. All-in-all, a pretty weak Oscar night, although I think Seth was much better than the James Franco/Anne Hathaway year.

Yea 2009 is still most recent high watermark. But of the last three shows this was the best. Anne and Franco was rock bottom. Alec and Steve Martin not much better. Seth did as good as can be hoped given the tired formula.
