Per http://nbc.com/agt and http://insidetv.ew.com/2013/03/19/nbc-announces-finale-dates-return-of-agt/, the new season will premiere Tuesday, June 4, at 9 PM EDT on NBC.

Sharon Osbourne, as we knew, has left as a judge.  There will now be a panel of four: Howie Mandel and Howard Stern are returning, and Mel B and Heidi Klum are joining.  Thus the proportion of American-raised people[*] on the panel falls to 25% from 33 1/3% last season, but that's still higher than 0% in Season 6.

[*]According to her Wikipedia entry, Klum holds dual American and German citizenship, and I don't want to start an off-topic quarrel on how many of this season's judges can be called "an American."

Considering the number of acts that have been on AGT since the beginning that aren’t American, I don’t see what difference it makes.

It doesn’t seem to make much sense. What will they do for a tiebreaker, ask Nick?

More camera cuts to the judges to take away from our viewing the acts.

I hope they have a new director. That is priority number one.

Quite a few indeed.  Many don't even reside here.  It seems that the only qualification needed to audition for, or perform on, AGT rather than one's own country's equivalent is being physically present in the US at the time of the audition or performance.

Of course the problem there is not having foreigners audition, perform, or judge (the show has never yet had a 100% American panel), but in naming it "America's Got Talent."  (As Jimmy Fallon said in his Chris Rock impression during a guest appearance on there several years back, it should be "has," not "''s got" anyway.)

What is done on other competition shows with four judges?  That's not rhetorical; all those that I've watched have only three and I honestly don't know.

... or to the audience.  NBC has been notorious for that since at least the 1950s.  It's not so bad during a singer's act but they do it to magicians and the like as well.  And of course, during a ventriloquist's act, they waste time with close-ups of the dummy's face so that the viewing audience can't see the ventriloquist's lips.  When I first heard show back in 2006 that AGT would be on the air, my immediate reaction was what a pity that it would be on NBC.

You'd think that it would vary from director to director or from producer to producer more than from network to network, but I guess that when network execs give orders, they get obeyed.

Saw a spot for it on NBC last night for the first time, with a shot of the judges’ table and a voiceover that it's premiering June 4.

I'll predict the winner of the show in the first 4 weeks, it's going to be one for the closers from one of the cities as always..

(you know they leave the best for last right?)

That got me to wondering, and we'll surely find out tonight: how many X's does it take to stop an audition?  Three of the four, or all four?  I'm guessing all four.

It's three. I remember from last season there was one guy Howie liked and the others didn't and he did not move on.

I'm a 'hooker' and a knitter. I guess that makes me bi-stitchual :). Crap I say

You're talking about yeses for moving on, Nayan, while the question was about X's for being stopped from finishing one's audition. Moreover, last season there were three judges, so we can't extrapolate from that.

The show started about fifteen minutes ago, so maybe people who are watching in real time in the Eastern or Central zones have already seen someone X'ed out and know.  Right now my DVR is watching it for me; I'll view it later tonight.

Edit: now we know; it takes four X's to cut an audition short.

Haven't watched yet, is the director better? Probably the worst thing about last season was the poor choices at camera.

I DVR'd it and will watch it tonight.. but I'm kind of guessing 1/2 of the camera shots will be on Heidi or Howard looking at Heidi

My opinion: no improvement.  Certainly there's not enough to notice.

One thing I found annoying was that all the Caucasian members of Catapult were spray-tanned to the exact same shade.  You can't see their skin colors while they're performing, so what's the point?  Sideswipe (who passed audition in Season 1, pulled out because of an injury, returned in Season 2, and got to the final eight) all had matching spray tans, but they performed in full view, and I think the idea was that all four of them were to be seen as equal and equivalent so they were to look as much alike as possible.

As for Tone the Chiefrocca: B, double O, *no* thank you.  And is he really going to keep repeating the same song at every level?  Ah well: at least he won't make it past the quarter-finals if he does.

I wish you'd been right.  There were a couple acts last night where Mandel, doing his usual thing of treating his buzzer as if it were another person's hand, let an audition continue while Brown, Klum, and Stern begged or ordered him to hit it and terminate the torture and the audience were crossing their forearms and booing.  That Canadian just loves watching a train wreck, and just like the last two seasons he only rarely gives an X.

Strong start, even though the best two were singers, again, can't deny the fact that they were absolutely amazing. And Heidi still looks amazingly hot.

Yeah loved her dancing to the BOOTY song

So how come the judges see the shadow dancers and not say "you are just like Silhouettes from last season with no kids" and not say "I've never seen this before"

The 10 y/o girl is making it to the end, no questions about it

I'm still have the nitpick from this show that they do so little auditions, in 2 hours we saw like a dozen, too much filler material, I think more than last year..

IIRC, last year it took 3 or 4 weeks before I saw anyone who could crack the top ten. Not this year.

Before Anna Christine sang, I knew she was going to be good. She had the voice of a very mature adult. I don’t recall such a young person sounding like that. It seemed so weird hearing that voice come out of that child.

Once Special Head finished his routine, it became obvious why he walked the way he walked, he had some sort of contraption under his robe, that when activated, gave the appearance of levitating. If he could avoid the awkward walk the routine would sell much better.

Catapult was enjoyable, but we saw that act last year, or was it the year before when the kids did it? Another one of those acts that makes it difficult to top the previous performance, week after week.

Angela Hoover, the comedian, was also very good. I’ll need to see more of her to see if she can make the top ten.

Marty Brown, the C&W singer, blew me away. He sounds like so many popular singers that some may say that is a negative, but I can’t hold that against him. If Kevin Skinner can win (although it was the agenda of the judges to overly promote him, IMO, and the gullible audience bought it), then Marty can win. The dude can sing. Period.

The dancers from Hawaii were great, but dancers have to come up with completely different routines every appearance and that makes it difficult for them to advance to the final rounds. Still, I’m looking forward to what they come up with next.

Having an Orchestra was different, and I enjoyed it, but I just don’t see America getting overly excited about ‘em.

There are times you just want to strangle Howie. Letting that girl continue doing whatever it was she was doing, was one of those.

Not once did I think about the director. Because of that, it was a good job. The question will be, can it continue?

I liked the sort critiques by the judges. I was concerned they would get in the way of each other and that didn’t happen. They have Heidi Klum there for one reason and one reason only - her looks. But I’m good with that. biggrin.gif

From start to finish that was one of the best shows I’ve seen from AGT.

We just started, but I already have Marty Brown and Anna Christine in my top 5.

Yeah the One Head guy had something that maybe attaches to the walking stick, and maybe failed at the last second (he had to do the "ninja flash" to hide it) then fell to the ground, maybe he sprained a leg while at it.. LOL

Last year, William Close and his Earth Harp were in the first episode, but he was auto-advanced in the Vegas round, so we went months between seeing his performances. The other two auto-advance acts were Olate Dogs (who won it all) and the dude who gets shot out of a cannon, which is so unimpressive that I'm surprised he got an "auto-advance".

My mistake. I had to go back and check last years thread, and it was the year before. How time flies when you are having fun. biggrin.gif
