Didn't see a thread for this, so thought I'd start one.

Anyone watching? I watched the first episode (have the 2nd DVR'd) and it's kinda strange. Starting off a little like "The Killing" but with some real eccentric characters. As is the Sundance custom, no censoring, f-bombs and nakedness (although fleeting) abound.

Don’t I wish it were in HD. Dish is still SD. mad.gif

Written and directed by Jane Campion.

I really like it. Mad Men’s Elizabeth Moss is great and so are the other characters.

This last episode wasn’t as strong as the first two, but still brought enough tension to make it enjoyable. And when dealing with the father, it is always tense.

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
The girl, Tui, wrote it was “no one” who raped her. Then Moss was talking to her dad and he said no one loves her like I do, no one. I immediately said he was the one who raped her. I feel certain those are the same words he has used with her in the past. We’ll see.

Thanks for that spoiler - with the accent I wasn't quite sure what the dad said.

Also SD here on my Comcast feed. As such I almost passed on it, but in the end content quality won out.

Does Comcast have Sundance OnDemand? I have FIOS and, although the linear channel is SD, the OnDemand selections are in HD.

I agree with what you said in the spoiler. I caught it right away while I was watching it "live." I'm hooked on this show and glad they apparently aren't going to drag it out like AMC did with The Killing due to Top of the Lake's limited number of episodes. And, unlike The Killing, we don't know if Tui is dead. By the way, Elisabeth Moss has no "z" in her name (unlike my mother).

Thank you!!! Years ago I used that end run for AMC shows before the HD channel kicked in. Sure enough I've got Sundance HD On Demand. Now I'll keep an eye out for other interesting Sundance content.

Three episodes to go.

My thoughts so far...

At this point I don’t think a spoiler is necessary, but I can change it if I necessary.

The dad, Matt, raped and impregnated Tui.

Tui is alive. Either Holly Hunter and her gals have her stashed, or Tui and her friends have a secret hideaway, which is why they are secretly boating onto the lake; they are taking her supplies.

The sheriff, Al, is corrupt. IIRC, he was paid off (I believe it was cocaine) by Matt when he and his sons killed the guy in the beginning. Al is getting a kickback from Matt’s drug operation. That home of Al’s is way too nice for someone on a sheriff’s salary. A doctor or attorney could be living there, but not a sheriff.

Robin may end up killing somebody, possibly Matt. If Matt is guilty, I can’t see him going down without a fight.

Last night's two-hour finale was amazingly weird and disconcerting in spots. However, it was spellbindingly good. There are a couple of thing I didn't see coming, but others I guessed long before the final episodes. I wonder how many people watched this fine miniseries.

I knew the sheriff was bad, but I didn’t expect a murderous sex ring involving teenagers. With the exception of that, and Robin being Matt’s daughter, I wasn’t too surprised. I thought it was an excellent series, but would have enjoyed it even more had I been able to view it in HD.

I thought the DNA evidence showed that Robin was not Matt's daughter.

I heard the sheriff tell Johnno his DNA didn't match Matt's. IIRC, he didn't say anything to Robin.

OK, so he was still safe in his relationship with Robin? I guess I missed who he was referring to.

Correct. I double and triple checked, and he only spoke to Johnno.

I would be very disappointed if Moss and Mullan didn't get nominated for Emmy’s.

Of course he's also a rapist murderer, so who knows if he's telling the truth.

What about Tui? Remember Tui said the baby's father is no one. Maybe she was lying and covering for Matt, maybe she did not know. But also, maybe she meant she had been roofied and raped and it could have been anybody.

It's too bad this show did not seem to get lots of viewers. I think on paper it looked so much like The Killing down under and people did not want to bother. But it's so much better.

I really like the Sundance channel. I don't watch a ton of movies from them, but every week I manage to catch a good movie that I probably would never have found on my own.

I know little about the On Demand services from my provider, Charter. Every time I go into that area, it is a dispiriting trek through teenager entertainment. I'm sure there is stuff of interest in there, I just lose patience sifting through the junk. HD Sundance would be great, I'll take a look.

He took the documentation (results) out of the manila envelope and laid them on the table. I see no reason for him to forge the results.

I agree it was ambiguous. She said on several occasions she didn’t know who the father was. She even said it to her friends, so it isn’t like she was trying to hide it from the authorities. I still think it was Matt. Her hatred of him, especially how she would cringe when he would touch her, and his sons saying they saw him in his underwear walking around on her bed. To me the implication was clear, but it was still ambiguous.

I took it that she (Tui) was roofied and that literally, in her mind, "no one" was responsible; a la Wikipedia..."victims may be unable to clearly recall the assault, the assailant, or the events surrounding the assault". There was a container on the counter labeled something like "Roofys".

Just before Tui's baby was born didn't she say, "I don't even know how it got in there." That would indicate she knew nothing about the "birds and the bees" or that she had been drugged.

Great series! I think what I liked the most about it was that it was full of richly drawn characters, each with their own issues and peculiarities without any one of them overpowering the story itself.

I was also somewhat fascinated by the environment and the culture of the story's location, I'm not completely unfamiliar with life in New Zealand having seen other content, but this one showed aspects of it that I had never really seen before.

It's too bad we don't see these one-off presentations here in the US as they can often be some of the finest TV content ever created.

This one slipped under my radar since I never watch Sundance Channel. But all y'all seem to love it and I respect my peeps' judgement. So I scheduled all 7 of these during Sunday's marathon, 3:00 thru 10:00 PM EDT. Is that all there is? Seven episodes?
