'Caprica' was very good and going to get better IMO, although its ratings didn't reflect that. It was probably, along with 'Rubicon', one of those shows that was literally "too smart for TV".

Thanks for the reminder. This piqued my interest from the day it got announced, but I didn't know the premiere was only a month away now.

my DVR is confusing me. It has the opener titled: "Pilot; Vector" and the run time as 90 minutes. Then, after a repeat of the opener, it lists 2 one hour episodes, one titled "Pilot", and the other "Vector". Does the premier have limited commercials so it only runs 90 minutes? And its then divided into 2 episodes, with lots more ads?

One of the spots SyFy ran for "Helix" mentioned "Series premiere, with limited commercial interruption."

Today's prime-time standard seems to be 75% or less actual program for the time slot, so it sounds like SyFy Channel is minimizing the commercials for the first two airings (tomorrow: 10pm-11:30pm, 11:30pm-1am), and then will include the regular load of commercials for the additional airings.

And, yes, it looks to me like SyFy is airing the first two episodes: "Pilot" and "Vector", so "Pilot" will take 45 minutes (with limited commercial interruption) followed by "Vector" taking 45 minutes (with limited commercial interruption) for a total of 90 minutes. And sometimes when two episodes are shown together, the redundant opening and closing credits are stripped off between episodes so the two episodes appear to be seamless, which also cuts back a bit of the program that has to air, but I don't know if SyFy will do that in this case.

SyFy schedule: http://www.syfy.com/schedule/

I tend to be a bit skeptical about such plans, so I have my DVR set to continue recording 30 minutes past the end of the show: recording 10pm-midnight instead of just 10pm-11:30pm.

My very humble setup:
Man Cave:Vizio E500i-A1 "Smart TV" (50-in 1080p 120Hz LED/LCD, has Netflix app.), Blu-ray players (Sony BDP-S3100, old LG BD390), Roku (the original model: N1000), PC (Windows 7), Comcast Internet (25Mbps/5Mbps).
Bedroom:LG 32LV3400-UA TV (32-in 768p 60Hz LED/LCD), HD DVR (Motorola RNG200N), Xfinity Comcast cable (Digital Starter Package), DVD/VHS player.

I noticed the same discrepancy and figured the same about the commercials. I have all of the listed episodes airing tomorrow set to record just in case something is amiss with the guide data.

is this a limited event series that will wrap up in 1 season or will it potentially carry over to future seasons?...seems best served by making it a 1 season mini-series

The plan is to run the first two episodes together twice tomorrow night, as well as each episode separately. If you have the first block of an hour and a half selected, you'll see everything. I deleted the redundant recordings my DVR scheduled as the EPG listed them all as "new". It is kind of confusing, though.

I fired up the HT tonite for the opening episode and the wife and I were ready to go at 7PM with our Friday night adult beverages.

Well....how can I say this nicely?

After a half an hour she couldn't stand it anymore and said "if I want to see the X-Files again, I have the disks."
I did manage 3/4 of the episode before loading my Oppo up.

Black Goo Virus Mystery again?
Really?
The main character's wife is sleeping with his brother and he has to go to an isolated Arctic station to save said brother's back-stabbing a$$?
Soap anyone?
Stereotyped Characters 101 anyone?
Apparently, it's possible to launch a series where ALL of the cast is playing them.

I could go on....however, my compassion for fellow forum members instructs me otherwise.

I wasn't that impressed, although the previews of what's to come were visually interesting. The CDC folks still haven't imposed a do not investigate areas alone policy, which in my mind is well past due.

As viewers we have to judge things that are shown. After a day and a half Dr. Boyle, the veterinary pathologist, still hasn't told her CDC team of the monkeys and the obvious machinations of the administrative staff. Are we to believe she passed up two or three meals in the cafeteria where she could have updated her compatriots as to what she has found. Everyone's in a fog and not operating as a crack CDC team asking direct questions and relentlessly following up on less than forthcoming responses. So far grade C-.

I want to like it. I'm as desperate for serious, adult sci-fi as a starving man is for a crust of bread. But the first two episodes seem to be treading familiar ground. Looks like a secret cabal is trying to create a super-soldier by genetic modification - oh hum.

Some creepy moments - all those frozen monkeys...brrrrr. But nothing to really distinguish itself so far. It's early yet. I'll stick with it in the hope it gathers some momentum and leads in some unexpected directions. Ron Moore seldom disappoints.

That was exactly my take on it as well.

The soundtrack did remind me very much of Charlie Jade though, too bad they couldn't have done that instead.
