"Why are we doing this?"
"It's what the Dome Mist wants."

Another successful Stephen King adaptation is born!

Actually, it's like fool me once. Or twice. Or five times. Or put another way, one definition of insanity is to keep repeating an action hoping for a different result.

Stephen King TV adaptation: check.

Residents of a town imprisoned by a mysterious force: check.

Possible threat by monsters or aliens: check.

Yeah. It'll probably be very different from UTD. No way would they mess up another King novel.

We go from... "Under Da Dome" (Little Mermaid) to "I think I Mist Again" (Phil Collins)...

The best thing the Dome ever did was to dematerialize Marg Helgenberger. Her lips were the last to go.

No, no, no. That's not exactly what I said, and definitely not what I meant.

I've been gradually weaning myself off commercial TV for years now, mostly because I can't stand the snipes, heavy commercial load, and other depredations. But I've made some exceptions for bad sci-fi shows, because I like the genre, and the shows weren't good enough to justify paying for BD or commercial-free streaming. Plus there was the fun of the online hate fests and columns like Tim's.

I always intended at some point to shift to Netflix or other streaming services, but it wasn't until last year around this time that I finally got a Netflix streaming account, and realized just how superior a viewing experience it is. Watching Dome this year, the first season since I got Netflix, has only strengthened that impression.

And then there’s this:

Exactly right.

When I started watching Dome, I really thought it was going to be an actual miniseries adaptation of the book, because I thought I read that somewhere or other. About two weeks in, I realized that CBS really wanted to keep the thing going as multi-year soap opera.

And the following year, an article in TV Guide magazine specifically said that Extant was not going to be like Dome. Extant really was going to a single season miniseries, the article said. But it's now been renewed for a third season, hasn't it?

And this business of canceling series after cliffhangers have aired has been going on for years. Remember Jericho? How about the Sarah Connor finale?

Dome was just the last straw for me. Netflix is a superior way to watch scripted programming. Commercial free services will be my choice for all scripted programming going forward, even bad sci-fi, if I actually watch any bad sci-fi going forward.

I haven't heard either way on Extant, which seems odd given that it's ratings were even worse than UTD. Maybe it's cheaper to produce though? Or UTD contract terms required an earlier decision? CBS has so many bubble shows that they probably need to stay as flexible as they can...

You know... with the new Fall season in swing, I'm finding myself REALLY not wanting to watch those last 7 episodes on the DVR. Not complaining just to complain... but honestly, I can't think of a good reason not to just free the space and free my mind from watching these final episodes.

I dropped out earlier in the season, yet prompted by a few posters here, watched the Finale .. it was not that long ago, yet it seems my brain has already erased my memory of it .. .. hooray

That's another one that I faithfully watched up until this year, then bagged the season until the finale. Which was as bad as everyone who did keep watching said. But at least I only wasted one hour instead of 13!

They should make a reality show about people who survived watching Under the Dome... call it, "Out from Under the Dome" and chronicle how we struggle to reconnect with better TV shows and learn to trust again!

And it would be far more relevant to the premise itself than the random nonsense that the writers crapped out each episode.

No, it didn't.

HBO and Showtime started commercial-free in the 70s and have remained so, while CNN, TNT, USA, and most others started as commercial services and have remained so. Only a handful of services, like AMC and IFC, started without commercials and added them later.

Meanwhile, in the streaming world, Hulu started with commercials, and now has added a commercial-free option. So I think things are moving in the right direction.
