While I do enjoy 24,

I put Kiefer in the Tom Cruise category of enjoying the work but not the man.

I don't think they are even close. Cruise is a whack job control freak. Kiefer is just a guy who likes to drink too much.

30 years ago he would have fit right in with all the other hellraisers in Hollywood who like to drink, fight and generally stumble onto a set. But he gets the work done somehow and it usually turns out fine.

As I recall, Shohreh Aghdashloo (Dina Araz from season 4) also voiced problems working with Kiefer.

I think Kiefer Sutherland has more than his share of personal devils. Part of that may be a virulent case of Short Man Syndrome, arising from the fact that his father is 6'4" and Kiefer is not, to say the least.

Why not? It's a good show. I think the cast and crew were just tired after season 8 and wanted to explore new opportunities, but if they are refreshed and renewed after season 9 they can still create a good show. Beats most of the junk being produced today.

Yeah, I hope 24 doesn't get overdone to make it crappy though.

With the success of the short-season version they just experienced, it was pretty much a no-brainer that the execs would at least be considering it. The format of this last season pretty much was a 12 episode launching pad for either a spin-off or another 12-part season.

The real question is whether or not Sutherland wants to continue on or not. If he doesn't, then they are stuck with a spin-off, something I'm not convinced people are going to buy into. If he is, then they have a built-in story for the next season since the Russians just abducted a free citizen of the United States and are holding him without due process. The story allows for the continuation of developing the other CTU/CIA characters in a semi-spin-off style, but still keeps a focus on Jack.

For me not so much. I found 24 via streaming roughly as the original series was ending and became a Bauer fan. When this series rolled around it was good to see him again much like one would enjoy catching up with an old friend. At the same time he isn't a character you become invested in (for me...) rather you ride along with and experience his adventures. We know about as much about him as his family...

So my take is it's not Bauer that drives the show rather the events that drives him. As such he could be replaced with a large degree of success. Plus, as this series showed it's not like we haven't seen it already more times than we can count. Outside of one or two well played scenes.

If they are going to keep the format virtually unchanged a new set of eyes (to me) would offer a nice refresh without breaking the mold. Let Morgan rescue Bauer and take over the reins. I wasn't impressed with Yvonne Strahovski in Chuck but Dexter is another story. I think she was terrific. Given decent material I think she could run for a few good seasons. Heck Bauer can ride along time to time for old times sake.

Not saying it needs a reboot but I'm guessing a reboot could be as good or better... strictly on material not on who's eyes we see it through.

If by "large degree of success" you mean about zero.

The only thing holding this show together is Jack Bauer. Reboot 24 and you may as well scrap the name and just become one of the many, many other network action thrillers that have tried and died to emulate the show since it was first broadcast.

Jack Bauer (and Kiefer Sutherland) is an iconic character as much a part of the show as he now is part of popular culture. A show without Jack is just a collection of cliches, plot contrivances and formulaic action. A Jack Bauer without Kiefer Sutherland is like Dirty Harry without Eastwood or Indiana Jones without Harrison Ford.

And was it coincidence that her last name was Morgan in 24? For those who don't know, Morgan was Chuck's best friend. Anyway, sorry about the off-topic stuff.

Agreed 100%. Sure you could call it 24 something or other without Jack, but it's never going to be the real 24 without him.

Do you remember the 24 movie that wasn't called 24 and Kiefer was playing a character not called Jack Bauer?

Well, sure, but a dash of Bauer makes all the difference. He's like buffalo sauce on a boring piece of chicken. So 24 isn't just that when Jack's stabbing people in the face with a spoon.

It wasn't that bad for a not-24 movie with Kiefer playing not-Jack-Bauer. Even if it basically was the same template.

By weird coincidence I flipped over to HBO this afternoon and it was actually on television!

I kept waiting for Jack Kiefer to say "dammit" in a slightly different way but that didn't happen while I was watching. He did tell his team to set up a perimeter though.

The Sentinel is on HBO Zone on Thursday morning if anyone wants to watch a not-24 (but really kinda) movie.
