Disney Begins Production on New 'Star Wars' TV Series

'Star Wars Rebels' to focus on time between 'Episode III' and 'IV'

By Tim Baysinger -- Broadcasting & Cable, 5/20/2013 10:00:00 AM

Production has begun on a new animated Star Wars TV series for Disney Channel, Star Wars Rebels.

The series will be set between the movies Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and Episode IV: A New Hope, where the newly formed Galactic Empire rises to power and hunts down the remaining Jedi Knights. Star Wars Rebels will be produced by Lucasfilm Animation.

The series will premiere fall 2014 as a one-hour special on Disney Channel, before moving to Disney XD.

Gary Marsh, president and chief creative officer, Disney Channels Worldwide, said, "The entire team at Lucasfilm has provided extraordinary creativity and innovation for over three decades, and we're thrilled to be bringing the expansive and imaginative world of Star Wars to Disney XD's viewers."

Disney acquired Lucasfilm last October for $4.05 billion, and will release a new film trilogy with the first movie targeted for a 2015 release.

If this is anything like the quality of The Clone Wars, I'll be one happy camper.

Just a reminder. One hour premier on Disney channel on October 3rd, then it's regular slot on Disney XD on the 13th.

Thanks for the heads-up! Enjoyed Clone Wars even if they never did resolve what happened with Ahsoka.

The sixth and final season premiered on Netflix only in March. Not sure if you caught that season or not.

Yeah I caught that but she just kind of drifted away after being falsely accused, right? That's what I seem to remember.

Ah well, it's not like they're going to wrap up all the Jedi and Sith stories anyway.

I just read that they are releasing 4 new episodes on there "star wars" website, so that might close loose ends.

I watched the first episode, and the quality is at least as good as the Clone Wars. It was pretty cool seeing classic stormtroopers (with very shiny armor) and classic tie fighters.

Disney didn't have any qualms showing a bunch of stormtoopers get shot to death or blown up in this episode. It was a pretty violent episode, though I did enjoy it quite a bit.

Too bad it will move from "Standard Cable" to a (slightly) premium tier (which I don't have) for the run of the series.

I watched it on my AppleTV & DisneyXD app Friday. Both the picture quality and show quality were great! The space/ship scenes looked absolutely incredible.

I'm watching Clone Wars on Netflix now, in the chronological order that LucasFilm posted. I'm about 40 episodes in. I mostly like it, except for the campy episodes--typically involving C3PO or JarJar--that remind me of the prequels. I'm expectant for Rebels and plan on reading the new book, "A New Dawn", that will set up a couple of the main characters of the new show.

As an old fan of the EU, I was disheartened to see the effective wiping of all the books, but I'm willing to give the new books--as official canon--a chance.

Since I have quite a bit to catch up on, I won't be watching live for a while, it seems, but I'm looking forward to it. Until then, they'll stay stored on my DVR.

I watched Rebels tonight and I liked it. Different from Clone Wars, but good different, I get DXD on D* so I added a series pass.

Yeah, that stuck out to me as well, although the last stormtrooper died in a very "Goofy" way.

This is the Disney XD channel, so it's for older kids. The violence is still pretty tame.

Those are the worst looking Wookies I've ever seen. They must have run out of time, budget, or both. I don't know if the Clone Wars had Wookies, so I can't compare.

^Chewbacca showed up in an Ahsoka focused episode in, I believe season 3. He didn't look as anemic as the Wookies here did. They must have been horribly mistreated by the Empire.

Dazed and confused over high tech.

Clone Wars had Wookies but they generally looked like taller Ewoks to me. Agree that they were not very well done.

The Disney treatment is all over this, and not on the good way. The stupid vacant look we often get from the typical Disney characters are here as well. Ezra is Aladdin in space. The look of the show is more "flat" as well, didn't have the 3d look of Clone Wars, and the writing and voices are not even close. So far I'm rather disappointed knowing that Dave Filoni the same show runner of Clone wars can't seems to achieve the same quality here. To be fair, this could turn around so I'll stick to it see how things shape up.

I watched the Clone Wars episode with Chewbacca and other Wookies and it was a 1000 times better than the ones on SWR. The ones in the new show look like someone made a very crude clay humanoid figure and dragged a fork down it to simulate the fur.

I'm hoping that the animation will improve over time. CW's CG evolved over the seasons as well. That being said, I'm not fond of the way that the characters are "drawn". I guess Disney wants "attractive" characters that they can sell more toys and populate Disneyworld with the live action versions of them.
