Does the premise of this show bother anyone other than me?

VisionOn's Avatar VisionOn 09:13 AM 09-11-2013
Hard to say when you didn't explain it.

All I know is that this was supposed to be a one-off mini-series and CBS stretched it to another season again.

Before it's even debuted? eek.gif At least they waited to renew 'Under the Dome' until it became an inexplicably certifiable hit.
VisionOn's Avatar VisionOn 09:21 AM 09-11-2013
Yep. When I heard about it a while back that it was going to be a one-off my interest was peaked, but I think the Dome effect rubbed off (or maybe the Dome wanted it) and they announced there was no reason the show couldn't keep going.

“We’re doing 15 [episodes] and hope to get not only two seasons but a lot more. This is not a miniseries,” Bruckheimer said when one TV critic suggested it must be. “We normally like orders of 22” episodes, agreed Bruckheimer’s TV chief Jonathan Littman. “When you’re doing something that is this intense and this much of a thriller it’s hard to bring out 22 [episodes], with repeats and weeks off, and keep up the suspense….The series concept dictates [the format].”

Thanks CBS. Makes it easier to skip now. Too much other stuff on anyways.

I guess you don't watch promos or you would easily understand my question. smile.gif

FBI agent apparently has dying wife. The President of the USA needs an operation and surgeon is a wife/mother with a family. For some reason, the agent wants the doc to mess up the operation so the Prez will die on the table. He holds her family hostage, telling her he'll kill her family if the Prez lives.

As I said, the whole premise just bothers me, and I especially don't see how they can drag this out for a full season. Also, hate to think of Dylan McDermott as a bad guy. Toni Collette is the surgeon.

I still don't get what you are bothered about. The fact it isn't a one season story, or the plot? The story is typical assassination stuff and I'm pretty sure the death-by-surgeon thing has been done before.
NetworkTV's Avatar NetworkTV 04:04 PM 09-11-2013
Personally, I'm skipping this one because it seems silly that they could stretch this out a half a season, much less multiple ones.

If I want to consume something full of filler products, I'll eat a hot dog...

As John Wayne said in The Searchers, "What do you want me to do? Draw you a picture? Spell it out? Don't ever ask me! Long as you live, don't ever ask me more."

THE PLOT!!! Maybe I'm the only one who doesn't like sh*t like basing an entire series on the assassination of the President of the United States. I know it's been done before as part of TV shows and as the basis for movies. Somehow, this one seems different and I don't like it. Sorry.

I watched the pilot ages ago. I liked the first episode. But I do wonder how they are going to keep it up for 15 episodes. I can't explain more without spoiling the first episode.

This show sounds like it's got an even worse situation for keeping things going than "Last Resort"...

There was a nice twist at the end to continue the story. It will be interesting to see how they do that for 13 more episodes.

No need to apologize, I didn't write the show. wink.gif

In answer to your first post though I think the answer is "no", as the popularity of 9 seasons of Jack Bauer foiling presidential assassination plots every week will attest to.

I liked 'Last Resort' - it was fast paced, action packed and had a great cast. It was certainly better than other, lesser series that have been renewed - 'The Following' and 'Revolution', I'm lookin' at you. Had it been renewed, the Island "hideout" would have served as the base of operations for as long as the series continued. I would have been fine with that.

Wasn't this an episode of "Person Of Interest"?
lexluthor's Avatar lexluthor 10:05 PM 09-23-2013
Anyone watched? Seemed ok,a little slow paced, but has some promise. I'm a bit concerned with all of those misdirection fake outs that there could be some lazy writing.
Mike99's Avatar Mike99 11:46 PM 09-23-2013
I watched the pilot & this should be a 2 hour movie at the most. What the heck are they going to do that requires a whole season or more?

As someone mentioned, the death-by-surgeon thing has been done before. I don't recall where or when but am pretty sure it was done in one episode.

The Mob Doctor! A series from last fall that died early because it was forgettable. I forgot it too.

Jordana Spiro was a surgeon in debt to the mob who was told to kill a witness on the operating table.

Person of Interest did it once. I recall Finch was a "Doctor" in the operating room . . .
mike1812's Avatar mike1812 10:01 AM 09-24-2013
Actually all those misdirection fakeouts are the only things that could keep this going for a season. The main plot itself - I just don't see how you stretch that over a season.

Enjoyed the first episode, better than I thought it was going to be.Can they keep it going?

What dumbed down writing. It was like "TV for third graders." I was very disappointed. Doesn't Bruckheimer know that third graders aren't up at that hour? BTW, there were some pretty obvious clues as to what is really going on.

Exactly how I felt. Network TV at its' worst. I whacked it from my playlist 2 minutes after it ended. You would think by now network execs might learn from the good cable networks that quality attracts viewers.Too bad a decent cast was completely wasted.

I guess you guys don't watch any TV as there hasn't been any new ideas in 30 years smile.gif

Yeah, that's a bit of hyperbole. But seriously, most of what we see, is repackaged from older ideas. If your biggest concern is finding a new plot scenario, you're not going to be watching a lot of television.

Didn't really follow the conversation did you? My response was related to someone who took issue with the story and I was pointing out that it's something they have probably encountered before.
DrLar's Avatar DrLar 02:06 PM 09-25-2013
I just saw Olympus has fallen on DVD, is Dylan McDermott playing exactly the same character or what? (elite FBI agent gone bad and wanting to kill the President)

I don't know how they are pulling off 14 more episodes, so they extended the "execution" for 2 more weeks, those could pass in 5-6 episodes, then what?
barth2k's Avatar barth2k 04:23 PM 09-25-2013
The show is dumbed down and ridiculous, but I enjoy it on that level.

But my enjoyment probably won't last.are they going to pull an assassinatus interruptus every week.
ridgefamus's Avatar ridgefamus 09:00 PM 09-25-2013
Probably not. First we have to have the encounter at the house by the drug dealer who's looking to whack the son for the money owed. Then there's the daughter's pregnancy issue. Two weeks fly by in an instant. rolleyes.gif

So we have a coup d'etat in the offing? Guess we need more background on just who this president is and why the people we have seen so far (FBI agent's father, president's advisor) and who knows who else, want him dead.
