Unfortunately, that's the way it is with the CW.
Plus, productions are less likely to use kids now days due to tighter schedules that put too much demand on the limited hours younger actors can work.
Still, it would have been nice to at least have Stephen be closer to the age of his younger brother, especially since he's supposed to be still in high school. As it was, it appeared as though John (who was older in the original series) was younger than Stephen.
That's not much of a mentor, if you ask me.
Honestly, it might be nice to have had younger actors and have their characters be street kids to avoid the innevitable issue of Stephen's family become dead weight as the story progresses. Their only use in the future will likely be as leverage to get Stephen to do things he doesn't want to.
Still, I did like the first episode overall, so I'll stick with it for the time being.
In regards to being geeky and wimpy, though, I'll have to disagree. Several of the younger male actors had quite a following among school age girls in the 70's. In fact, their was a whole big thing of one character being phased out in favor of another who was better looking and more appealing to the audience.
Even back then, there was still a push for good looking people on TV.
