It's the holidays, what better time for gangland murder, corruption and organized crime!

Premiere: Wed 12/4 9pm - two episodes every Wednesday for three weeks.

The epic battle between a determined police chief and a dangerous mobster inflames 1940s Los Angeles in TNT's eagerly anticipated television event Mob City. This powerful drama comes to TNT from Frank Darabont (The Walking Dead), who wrote and directed the pilot and serves as executive producer on the series. Based on the critically acclaimed book L.A. Noir: The Struggle for the Soul of America's Most Seductive City, by John Buntin, Mob City opens in post-war Los Angeles, home to glamorous movie stars, powerful studio heads and returning war heroes. But it's also a city caught between a powerful and corrupt police force and an even more dangerous criminal network determined to make L.A. its West Coast base. Los Angeles Police Chief William Parker (Neal McDonough - Captain America, Desperate Housewives) has made it his mission to free the city of criminals like Ben "Bugsy" Siegel (Ed Burns - Entourage) and Mickey Cohen (Jeremy Luke - Don Jon), the ruthless king of the Los Angeles underworld. Parker also won't hesitate to go after anyone from his own police force who sells out honor and duty for the sake of a big payout. To carry out his sweep of organized crime, Parker sets up a new mob task force within the LAPD. Headed by Det. Hal Morrison (Jeffrey DeMunn - The Walking Dead, The Shawshank Redemption), the task force includes Det. Joe Teague (Jon Bernthal - The Walking Dead), an ex-Marine who holds his cards close to his chest. Mob City's exceptional ensemble cast also includes Gregory Itzin (24), Robert Knepper (Prison Break), Milo Ventimiglia (Heroes) and Alexa Davalos (Clash of the Titans, The Mist). Mob City is produced by TNT Originals, with Darabont, Michael De Luca (The Social Network) and Elliot Webb (Alpha House) serving as executive producers.

· Alexa Davalos as Jasmine
· Ed Burns as Bugsy Siegel
· Gregory Itzin as TBA
· Jeffrey DeMunn as Hal Morrison
· Jeremy Luke as Mickey Cohen
· Jon Bernthal as Joe Teague
· Milo Ventimiglia as Ned Stax
· Neal McDonough as William Parker
· Robert Knepper as Sid Rothman

This has gone through several name changes over the past year (partially to avoid connections with the game L.A. Noire) and despite the impressive cast and credentials I can't figure out if this will be good or is just being burned off at the end of the year. I can't tell if it's a mini series or a tester for an ongoing series either.

Well, I've seen the first hour. . It does have a visual flair but (I don't want to give anything away) I felt that there just wasn't much substance to it. A lot of '40s slang but signifying very little. I didn't hate it, bit it sure ain't no BOARDWALK EMPIRE! I guess BE has spoiled me and I truly wanted Darabont's show to be better than I felt it was. Maybe hearing Simon Pegg with an American accent was too distracting! Still, it was only one episode and I do plan on seeing all six, with the hope that it will get better. . ...

Well, you have to keep in mind that "BE" is on HBO. A premium movie network.

Hopefully it develops more substance as it goes on.

I was on the fence with this one, but the more I see the more I'm deciding not to watch. I may record it, there are a number of things there waiting, but dumpable. Just dumped 28 episodes of Chicago Fire, after a year an a half nothing I saw or read got me excited about it so bye bye.

I have setup a season pass for Mob City, although not without some reservations. Some of the talk about the show here has not been encouraging but its remarkable ensemble cast gives me some hope. I'll watch the first few episodes and reassess after that.

The shortness of the season was a strong selling point for me. One of the reasons I like so many British series is that their seasons are much shorter than what is the norm for US shows. They tell their stories economically with no filler episodes. Just hope that this show takes a lesson from the Cousins.

Ha. For sure.

I've heard the shortness to "Mob City" is because it's difficult to launch a new series in December. They'd rather get it out there to be scene and have another go-around next year.

Reviews coming in so far say this looks great but doesn't have much underneath the style.

http://www.hitfix.com/whats-alan-watching/review-tnts-mob-city-a-pretty-but-hollow-gangster-story

Expect average. But it's only six episodes so enough bullets and broads might keep me going.

I did the same, but at this point have no intention of watching. Got too much other stuff to catch up on, perhaps in Jan - if it gets decent reviews - which so far it has not. Otherwise I'll just dump the folder.

Yeah, same here. Too much other stuff backed up on the machine to watch another mob/crime drama that just retreads old ground. Atmosphere is great, but it only takes you so far. However, that said, the six hour length is a big plus factor. If it had premiered earlier in the year, before my dance card filled up, I might have given it a shot.

I found it decent and worth watching. Especially at this time of year when many shows take a holiday break. I found interesting the cast choice of Neal McDonough as William H. Parker. McDonough played 1st Lt. Lynn 'Buck' Compton in Band of Brothers who, after the war served with the Los Angeles Police Department from 1946-1951.

Well, it's no BOARDWALK EMPIRE, that's for sure. But while B.E. takes a novelistic approach with characters during Prohibition, MOB CITY is more like a stylized update (or hommage) of old movies (KISS ME DEADLY, et al).
While I didn't find it totally engrossing, it was worth seeing for Simon Pegg doing a 40s American accent (distracting at first, but he did quite well.)

That style is called Film Noir. It has been done before in color - the original Chinatown for example, but this is the first time I have seen it in digital video and in a 1-hour serial drama format.

I liked it. They call it a "three week event", which may mean that they paid for a quarter season and gave up, or that they thought it had a better chance as a miniseries.

Season Pass added. Hope it stays good.

We agree. I started reading noir fiction as a very young man and have always enjoyed noir films such as The Maltese Falcon and too many more to mention. There probably was more style than substance in the first two hour episode of Mob City but I loved it nonetheless. The French actress who played Jasmine, the ex wife of Detective Joe Teague (Jon Bernthal), was both elegant and beautiful, the noir femme fatale from central casting. smile.gif I am looking forward to more.

The movie that Mob City most resembles is the 2002 Film Noir production Road to Perdition.

Alexa Davolos (Jasmine) looked familiar and I looked her up on IMDB. The Chronicles of Riddick (2004).

Alexa Davalos will always be Gwen Raiden to me. One of the most memorable characters to appear in Angel. And she was only a guest star for a couple of episodes.

The reason for 6 episodes is it's a trial run. If the numbers are good, it will be picked up, plus it's cheaper that way for the network. Think of The Walking Dead first season, 7 great episodes, until Kirkman ran Frank out. Then again what do I know, it's sure popular now.... Weakest character, for me, is the actor playing Mickey Cohen, of course just watched Sean Penn play him recently in Gangster Squad..... Started slow, and then picked up...I'm in
Waiting for "Shane" to rub his head, and get a southern accent...

I enjoyed last night's episode but I'm a fan of film noir. Obviously mob crime only happens during the winter. smile.gif
