Depends on one's audio setup.

I admit watching on a computer screen dulls the effect somewhat, but in an HT with a good display system it matters.
Of course, YMMV.wink.gif

I haven't watched anything on a computer screen for years. HTPC since forever. Once you control movies with a mouse you can't go back.

it's been heavily rumoured that Ellen Page and Kate Mara are set to star in season 2 of True Detective...I like them both but I don't see them matching the quality of McConaughey and Harrelson

I did not know it was possible to cringe and be excited at the same time. Maybe they'll bring their A game. IF it does involve the secret underground cult trucker stuff maybe having two pretty ladies plays into that. They have to go God Tier on this if true.

Why does it always have to be a pair of detectives?

Make it a whole squad or a PI and a homicide cop.

They shouldn't have a schtick, like it's a pair of detectives working on a case.

What if it's not? What if one is a cop and the other is tied up somewhere and that's the story, finding her before she gets killed? At any rate those two rumored ladies are really gonna have to sell it and IF they do it should be glorious. This can't be Cagney and Lacey. They may as well cast Tina Fey and Kristen Wiig if that's the case.

I'm wracking my brain for a female role that approaches anything like what MM or WH did in season one. Maybe Jodi Foster in SOTL, maybe. Possibly Juliette Lewis in NBK. No single role has the right amount of smart and crazy that I can think of.

Dunno man.. hope they don't go there. Can't take two emaciated 5ft high waifs seriously as a hard-driving detectives. In roles that are less physically demanding, I wouldn't mind.. in fact I'd likely look forward to it.

Maybe they will be the lady-love characters of the 2 detectives?
I can't imagine either of these gals as cops.

Because detectives have traditionally worked in pairs (at least according to Hollywood).

The showrunner has said the series is about characters, not crime puzzles.
More than 2 dicks and it's hard to find the time to develop a meaningful character study of the protagonists.

I think both Kate and Ellen could do just fine as True Detectives. Kate had a nice role in American Horror Story and if you haven't seen Ellen Page in Hard Candy, you should...

That casting, while probably being fine from a performance standpoint, lacks the star wattage of this inaugural season of the show. Get Meryl Streep and Judi Dench, now we're talkin'. wink.gif

The question is would they fit the roles of detectives?
I can see 'em as other characters, but not as cops.

I saw Kinnaman in a Sveedish movie the other day and was somewhat impressed, but I'm not sure how he would come across as a hard-bitten cop.

Who's Kate Mara?

Usuallly detective are older, have been on the police force for awhile to get promoted, especially to elite units like Homicide.

So if they put a couple of twenty-something actresses, TD may be lining up the ramp next to the shark tank.

good writing trumps everything else...since Nic Pizzolatto is returning I have confidence that whoever they cast will work fine...but can they match the lightning in a bottle scenario from the 1st season?...that'll be tough...I'm also not sure if I would qualify Woody Harrelson as being a 'major' movie star...yeah he's had some nice roles but he's more of a fringe supporting actor versus a full star like Johnny Depp, Russell Crowe etc...McConaughey saw a career revival recently which brought him into elite status...I don't think he was even a major star before the past 2 years

as far as Kate Mara and Ellen Page I hear the producers are interested in hiring them because they are real life close friends just like Harrelson and McConaughey...it showed in their performances in Season 1 and the showrunners are hoping for similar onscreen chemistry in Season 2

IMO, Harrelson is as much of a household name as McConaughey .. while I'm sure McConaughey currently makes more coin I don't think I'd relegate Harrelson to "fringe supporting actor" ..

Could Harrelson carry the lead in a big budget blockbuster film .. ?? Yes, but it would likely not be a big money maker as he's outside the main demographic the Studios go for ..
