I keep reading the show isn't even officially signed at HBO. I wonder how that plays into a January release of season two?

There's no way they'll make Jan., not 2015 anyway, when they haven't even cast anyone yet.

Maybe they have but haven't announced it yet?

FWIW, I don't think the casting is a big deal....
It's the writing, the logistics, and non-acting talent that takes time to put together.wink.gif

True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto still has plenty to say about the first season of his buzzy, buzzy show. "In True Detective, the world itself is the crime," Pizzolatto explains on To the Best of Our Knowledge. "The world itself is poison; there's something ruinous at work here. The poison at the root of the world is humanity," he says, just in case you thought the show was a paean to optimism. As for season two, the show will be set in California, Pizzolatto says. "Not Los Angeles, but some of the much lesser-known venues of California. And we're going to try to capture a certain psychosphere ambiance of the place, much like we did in season one." He also says the season has three leads, the characters are all new, and casting will start "in earnest" within the next few weeks. No word yet if any of the characters will have an affinity for repurposed-beer-can crafts, but one hopes so.

I call B.S. on this one.rolleyes.gif
If this is what he REALLY believes, then either Rust or Marty had to die.

The southern Central Valley is perfect for a modern noir.

Yup, I was thinking the same thing, or even the lower eastern part of the state out past Palm Springs. The Salton Sea area just drips with noir possibilities.

Born in the Central Valley and lived in Palm Springs in the late 70's. Both would make good backdrops. I could also see some areas in Northern California as well that are rural and out of the way.

"GOT" is HBO's most-watched series (ever), but "True Detective" is its newest gem. On Thursday, the freshman anthology series earned 12 Emmy nods, including nominations for best drama, best writing and two best actor nods for Season 1 stars Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson. The show's structure presents a new cast of characters and story each season, and while Lombardo didn't have any casting news on Thursday he did drop a major tease for Season 2.

"The two scripts we have are -- I hate to jinx it -- but they are more exciting than the first season," he promised.

"True Detective" creator Nic Pizzolatto was just as cryptic with The Daily Beast, saying little except that it will be set in California, and there are four central roles.

"We're not keeping any secrets, so when something concrete develops, we'll announce it to everybody," Pizzolatto said. "But everything has just been empty rumors so far."
Down to two scripts it seems...

I know my opinion is far from unanimous but I have always liked Colin Farrell in the right thing. Did you see him in In Bruges? It is one of my favorite films and I thought Farrell was wonderful in it.

That ONE movie is pretty good and I did enjoy it but it's only one. Maybe he can be the pedo/cult/raper.

Colin Farrell has made a lot of crappy movies, but he has enough acting chops to be quite good when he finds the right role. He was excellent in both Ondine and Crazy Heart, and was a lot of fun in the Fright Night remake.

Just a few years ago, people would have scoffed at Matthew McConaughey being cast in a serious crime drama.

Yes, I thought he was very good in Ondine as well, as you note, with good material Farrell can be a very good actor and something like True Detective just might be it. He was quite good in Shell Shock(Triage) as well.

Oh I scoffed at Matthew McConaughey back in the days before his performance in The Lincoln Lawyer amazed a lot of folks, me included. Before that, I thought he was just one more Hollywood pretty boy beefcake. In McConaughey's defense, his incredibly good looks worked against him most of the time until he finally got enough years under his belt to be able to project some gravitas into his roles.

I sort have boycotted Matthew McConaughey since 1997 when he was opposed Jodie Foster in Contact. I rejoined his fan base after seeing Magic Mike and The Lincoln Lawyer.

I scoffed before TD and still scoff.

Not really interested in going out of my way to see his movies.

He did a lot of dreck back in the day.
