It's official. All those red herrings and easter eggs that never panned out in the first season are continuing through the casting of season two.

I can't remember exactly right now, but a few years back, I think it was Maxim did a fairly in depth interview with MM .. he came across as quite eccentric .. not completely a loon, but a bit off center .. the kind of guy I'd like to have a beer with .. I think so many male actors that have the looks almost have to accept roles that are more style than substance initially, at least until they can financially be more picky .. Pitt, would be another example ..

"Mud" is a great small budget MM film and showcases his talent well .. "Dallas Buyers Club" and his role in "The Wolf of Wall Street" .. 3 roles, 3 completely different characters and a great job on all ..

Vince Vaughn would be hard to accept as a "True Detective" .. simply because he is, errrr .. Vince Vaughn

The role under consideration for Vaughn is the bad guy, not a detective.

Vince in Get Shorty 2(forgot the name) was a thug, but a funny one. White gangsta, hilarious.

MM in Killer Joe was strange.

Buscemi could be problematic. Even with his Boardwalk Empire creds I'd worry that fellow characters would constantly say "shut up Donnie".

‘True Detective’ Season 2 Plot ‘Not as Dark’ as First Season, Says HBO Boss

Thursday, August 21, 2014 | 11:37AM PT | variety.com

Season 2 of HBO’s critically acclaimed drama “True Detective” won’t be quite as dark as the first, according to HBO programming president Michael Lombardo, who spoke Thursday at the Guardian Intl, Television Festival in Edinburgh.

Again scripted by creator Nic Pizzolatto the season will feature a new story and cast of characters, led by three cops — a woman and two men, said Lombardo, according to HuffPost UK. But just because the new story isn’t necessarily as dark as the first, don’t expect it to be all sunshine and rainbows, either.

“It’s still dark,” Lombardo said at the festival. “Nic explores the darkness in people’s souls. … It’s not as dark, but it’s not a light ride. Nic likes looking into the crevices of the soul.”

Filming is expected to begin in September in California, and while the first season’s episodes were directed exclusively by Cary Fukunaga (who earned a directing Emmy nomination), the second season’s duties will be split among multiple helmers, according to Lombardo.

The network has yet to confirm any cast members for the new season, but a number of potential names have been rumored in conjunction with the roles, including Colin Farrell, Vince Vaughn and Taylor Kitsch.

They are letting the lightning out of the bottle or trolling the shirt out of us fans. I expect Lena Dunham to be lead actress at this point.

Having failed to make Tim Riggins (aka Taylor Kitsch) an action movie star, maybe the plan is now to make him a serious, brooding film-noir detective! If at first you don't succeed....

His record is short enough that I'm ok with him trying. Lots like John Carter and Savages.

That's basically my reservation, but this environment can often provide for surprising performances that you'd never expect, hopefully that will be the case with Vaughn.

You must not have watched many of MM's recent movies then. He's turned into quite the Master Thespian in recent years, one of the best American actors IMO.

Both the new guys should be good as well, as long as the writing & direction is as sharp as it was last year. Lawrence Olivier couldn't have saved 'Under the Dome', for example.

I have this feeling that certain comedy actors (Vaughn's usual territory), can do marvels in more dramatic and serious roles, while the opposite is not always true. Maybe because comedy often hides something more somber I don't know. I can't wait to see what they have in store for this new season.

Yeah, Tom Hanks started in a slapstick cross-dressing comedy - Bosom Buddies. Robin Williams also had some pretty good performances in some darker dramatic roles too. I have a feeling Vaughn will be good if the writing is decent.

There is no reason to believe at this point, that VV may play the off-beat sidekick that is constantly cracking wise ..
