No matter how lose the ending, Nic Pizzolatto's writing and the subsequent delivery by Rust during the entire 8 episodes was more than worth the investment of time .. if I was blind I would still listen to the show just for the dialog alone ..
Just lifting a few off IMDB so I get them right .. IMO, the first season had some of the best lines ever written for a TV show .. big shoes to fill on Season 2, indeed ..
"We are things that labor under the illusion of having a self, that accretion of sensory experience and feelings, programmed with total assurance that we are each somebody, when in fact everbody's nobody... I think the honorable thing for our species to do is to deny our programming. Stop reproducing, walk hand in hand into extinction - one last midnight, brothers and sisters opting out of a raw deal. "
"Just observation and deduction. I see a propensity for obesity. Poverty. A yen for fairy tales. Folks puttin' what few bucks they do have into a little wicker basket being passed around. I think it's safe to say nobody here's gonna be splitting the atom, Marty. "
"If the only thing keeping a person decent is the expectation of divine reward, then brother that person is a piece of #$%^; and I'd like to get as many of them out in the open as possible. "
"People incapable of guilt usually do have a good time. "
"The ontological fallacy of expecting a light at the end of the tunnel, well, that's what the preacher sells, same as a shrink. See, the preacher, he encourages your capacity for illusion. Then he tells you it's a $%#@&* virtue. Always a buck to be had doing that, and it's such a desperate sense of entitlement, isn't it? "
Oddball: Why don't you knock it off with them negative waves? Why don't you dig how beautiful it is out here? Why don't you say something righteous and hopeful for a change?
