I would agree with you. Except that the Lost producers had the difficult task of having to stretch the show out over 100+ episodes. TD only had ten. They were throwing things in there that they knew would go unresolved.

The actors made the show.

But my problem with the ending is not so much the loose threads but it feels not true to character. Doesn't feel like the light is winning. They didn't get their man. They got one lone nut, but the conspiracy goes on. There is a whole bunch of powerful evil people still out there doing their thing. If anything, cohle should be even more depressed at the end.

Completely agree.
The ending felt like a cop-out by the writers.

I didn't feel cheated in any way. The worst part was the revenge sex segment.

I agree with others who disliked the ending. Felt like we could have easily gotten a little more closure with the whole conspiracy. Up until that point though, loved it. Cant wait for season 2

My take away was the conspiracy was too big hence the guys just "getting theirs." I'm not sure where the disappointment for so many comes in unless they wanted a full take down of the govt and church, highly unrealistic, OR the void swallowing up Marty and Rust, neither would have fit what was happening in the overall story. I still find the butt hurt hilarious in the egg hunting crowd. The final lines of the series are among the best. “Once there was only dark. If you ask me, the light’s winning.”

I also can't wait for season two, they have big shoes to fill.

The fact that there could never be perfect closure was pretty much the whole point of the ending.

I had no problem with that. My problem with the ending was that it didn't match the inspired writing of the show up until that point. Kind of a crazy Buffalo Bill in a crazy house hunt scene. We've seen that already. I have no problem with the lack of mysticism or egg hunting (whatever that is). Just thought it could have been better. Wouldn't keep me from watching it again.

It's OK to be honest here...TD's ending truly sucked.

No matter how lose the ending, Nic Pizzolatto's writing and the subsequent delivery by Rust during the entire 8 episodes was more than worth the investment of time .. if I was blind I would still listen to the show just for the dialog alone ..

Just lifting a few off IMDB so I get them right .. IMO, the first season had some of the best lines ever written for a TV show .. big shoes to fill on Season 2, indeed ..

"We are things that labor under the illusion of having a self, that accretion of sensory experience and feelings, programmed with total assurance that we are each somebody, when in fact everbody's nobody... I think the honorable thing for our species to do is to deny our programming. Stop reproducing, walk hand in hand into extinction - one last midnight, brothers and sisters opting out of a raw deal. "

"Just observation and deduction. I see a propensity for obesity. Poverty. A yen for fairy tales. Folks puttin' what few bucks they do have into a little wicker basket being passed around. I think it's safe to say nobody here's gonna be splitting the atom, Marty. "

"If the only thing keeping a person decent is the expectation of divine reward, then brother that person is a piece of #$%^; and I'd like to get as many of them out in the open as possible. "

"People incapable of guilt usually do have a good time. "

"The ontological fallacy of expecting a light at the end of the tunnel, well, that's what the preacher sells, same as a shrink. See, the preacher, he encourages your capacity for illusion. Then he tells you it's a $%#@&* virtue. Always a buck to be had doing that, and it's such a desperate sense of entitlement, isn't it? "

Oddball: Why don't you knock it off with them negative waves? Why don't you dig how beautiful it is out here? Why don't you say something righteous and hopeful for a change?

All other TV watching is currently on hold... Comcast is having their 'watchathon' this week by opening up the premium channels on-demand. Just got through the first two episodes of TD and will try to knock out two more a night. I've really enjoyed it so far. I purposely have avoided any discussion or reading reviews b/c I knew I'd eventually watch it. Glad I did!!!

Then I'll finally cut the cord...
