I can definitely see this show improving as it goes. This episode was better than the last and the cast are putting forward some pretty good performances.

The question is; Why were they non-lethal?

Seems too, that one could custom make the cartridge to have attenuated force? Still, I'm glad they showed him dealing with the pain, rather than the old quick recovery bit, like we used to see all the time on TeeVee.

I find Frank's driver to be an odd gent. His description of the eastern European (investor?) seemed to describe himself. Keep an eye on this guy

Unless "they" knew he was coming. This was a warning shot, let's face it leaving him alive is almost a worst punishment.

This season has hit its stride with that episode. Perhaps most important is that I now find Woodrugh and Frank to be interesting characters.

The writer likes to put his male protagonist through near death experience. How else will they grow.

I thought maybe Ray died from the embarrassment of that dream sequence.

VV still gets some really awkward lines that I don't think ANYbody can pull off.

I like that there is an actual case this season. Nice change of pace from last.

One theory about non-lethal rounds is that the guy who used them could be LE.

Perhaps whoever show Ray didn't want to kill a cop, because that would intensify the law enforcement response, including possibly involving the FBI, whereas if Ray is just beaten up a bit, the status quo continues.

Despite all of the acclaim for this series, the writer/showrunner of TD is not the greatest around IMO.

True Detective is about a CASE?
I thought it was about dysfunctional, alcoholic cops mumbling at their shoes and, occasionally, each other...

Here is a demo of a unit for vaporizing essential oils from "Herbs and Spices".

Vaporizer Bag/Balloon is shown at about 114 seconds in.

I didn't have any trouble with the rubber buckshot. It seems to me that its use will be explained as we go on in the story.

I agree that the scene in which Frank pummeled his predecessor bar owner after the guy not only refused to return it but dissed frank too was terrific. Big mistake! The fat boy forgot how Frank got to be the boss in the first place.

I agree that the show is getting better as it goes along. It will be interesting to see what self destructive antic Ray pulls the next time he gets drunk. Thought the best line of the night was the doctor's question to Ray, "Do you want to live?" The stricken look on Ray's face told us all we need to know about the guy.

Agreed on the steady rise in the quality of this show. This season's edition of TD is so dirty and grimy and focuses so much on human greed and corruption that it's entirely different than than season one. I am getting to like it more with every passing week. When Ray Donovan returns next week you'll have two of the grittiest TV series on the air on Sunday night.

Ep 3 was a little better than the first 2. Still hating the script though. VV's character is infested with weird/stupid lines. In the bar when VV and CF meet to talk, they used the words "stridency" and "apoplectic" in their conversation. Really?? .

Despite the issues, we're hanging in there to see how this all plays out.

Somehow, last night's episode opening reminded me of Lynch's Twin Peak scene, not very original. The plot does thicken though.

Thought the same thing, maybe an homage. As far as being original we are so deep into the movie/TV age you can almost always show something similar that was some before.

The writer is trying to project himself as something he is not...(an intellectual).
It's the old Artiste ego thingy again.

With "original programming," as HBO calls it, homage belongs in the garbage.

I think it's a homage to this scene

but the guy gives off such a comic vibe that it feels like parody, like an SNL skit. Or maybe it's the show being all meta and self aware.

I read that he's a lit professor. Maybe that's the problem. He IS an intellectual. But good dramatists aren't necessarily intellectuals, and vice versa.

It's a very common genre trope for gangster characters to use highfalutin language to show off that they're more educated and smarter than their underlings and associates. That's hardly something that Nic Pizzolatto invented.
