Really hate seeing a 20 year old kid go out that way.
My thoughts exactly.I hate to say it but NASCAR's cavalier attitude of "let the boys race"has blown up.

Tony should have been down on the apron letting the kid cool off. These are the kind of things that make you wish for a time machine.
You have to wonder if he even saw the kid. A short dirt track with poor lighting, a black fire suit, plus there appeared to be a car directly in front of Stewart. The kid did have to run down from his car to get to Stewart. I have only watched the video once, and I won't be watching it again. Seeing the kid flying like a rag doll was sickening, as was the reaction of the track workers when they got there.

The irony was that he most likely was emulating his heroes and it cost him his life.

I havent even seen the video but its almost certain Stewart will go to prison after a very long trial. Negligent homicide or something. Might only be for a couple of years but he will. Watch.

Hard to say.

There was a car in front of Stewart's, which may have blocked his view until the last second.

Or he may in fact have seen the kid and blipped the throttle to scare him. Fact is though, if the kid had not run down to Stewart's car, he would not be dead.

I can't believe that Stewart would have deliberately tried to run him over.

I think the more likely outcome is that no charges will be filed, but the kid's family will sue for wrongful death. Unless there is video showing Stewart deliberately turning in to him, or some other incriminating evidence, I think it would be reasonable to conclude that a jury would find them equally at fault.

Having said that, no way Stewart would want this to go to trial. They will settle out of court for an awful lot of money, and that will be that.

A very sad and tragic day.

That's what I think as well. I refuse to believe it was deliberate.

As tragic as his death is, and it is, he did something totally irresponsible.

Of course he didn't deliberately try to kill the kid. I believe he did deliberately try to roost him when he went by and it tragically backfired on him.

Kevin shouldn't have left his car but he probably grew up watching the Tony Stewarts of the world do the same thing, and challenging a NASCAR star like that would have boosted his "cred' on the local level.

If my first statement turns out to be true, then we'll have an instance where two irrational egos combined into something truly horrible. As a guy I can say some of my worst moments in life have been a result of "irrational ego". By the time most guys can control it, they're past the age of your typical race car driver.

Wow, this story is really blowing up on national sports media this morning. Of all the mainstream T heads I've heard to this point, the only one that seems to have a clue is Dan Patrick.

The funny thing is, in some respects the cars are a lot better looking then the current phallic nose cars.

Best not to search my previous posts in this thread then. I don't know that they are quite coyote ugly, but maybe two-bag ugly? :-)

Oh, poor baby.....it's so exhausting having the best car on the grid and taking a Sunday cruise around the track on race day........GTFO. If he's that "worn out", maybe he should quit and stop making excuses. His level of talent has been truly revealed. Stop making excuses for him. If anyone is "worn out", it's Alonso having to squeeze every ounce of performance and then some out of a crap car week in and week out for the last 5 seasons.

Definitely, especially since they don't want other teams to get him.

He's a really great story. Really happy for him.

There's probably a lot of truth in that Vettel story, it's just something that should never be spoken of publicly by himself or his team. They need a little British stiff upper lip too. Nobody wants to hear about whether your helmet was too tight or if the sun was in your eyes. Just win baby.

I don't know if anyone saw it but last Sundays NASCAR race was a sweet example of a couple of sportsmen leaving everything and then some on the table, and showing respect and graciousness towards each other post race. Did my heart good.

NASCAR on a road course rarely fails to be very entertaining. Those last 5 laps or so were epic.

I love watching those big-ass cars go through the bus stop.

Having said that, did you wait through the first red flag? After seeing the way the cars are funneled down, and the unevenness of the right side guardrail, I thought surely they will fix that now that we have seen what carnage it can cause. Then the broadcast team showed what in essence was the exact same wreck on at least two previous occurrences. I claim no special knowledge of Watkins Glen, but that part of the track looks like pretty unsafe to me. I don't know how to fix it, but at some point a driver is not going to walk away from one of those massive wrecks.

BTW, does anyone at NASCAR understands the words "track limits". I guess for NASCAR the "track" is defined as everything between the barriers, regardless of what the barriers actually are. It did make for some very creative lines.

Ferrari was choosing between him and Hulkenberg before Raikkonen became available.

They seem to be in a constant state of safety improvement at Watkins Glen. That funnel into the bridge is obviously bad news. Maybe they should just open up the whole SCCA (or whatever it is now) track for them. Those cars are seriously built like tanks. That kind of damage and the drivers walking away is amazing.

Some of those maneuvers were completed exclusively on the wide curbs with no part of the car on the actual track surface. Part of me says it's out of bounds but another part says "that was awesome". I'm sure they will push the limits until someone lays down the law. But for now, with those cars, you are seeing a real "drivers" battle. AJ and Marcos are not in top tier equipment but their talent can not be denied at that kind of track. Make this series 50 percent road course and you got me back as a regular fan.

Honda is back next year powering McLaren !!!

Honda has years of experience with turbocharge racing engines and I expect that they will copy Mercedes turbo design.

So we likely will see a real contest again.
