I think Malaysia is going to cause some problems with some of the teams considering how hot it is. Obviously RB was having some packaging/cooling issues. We'll see if they have them resolved and if any of the other teams have pushed the limit in that dept.

Agreed.
Frankly, I doubt these little turbos are even capable of sounding anything close to the old V8s.
Although, no doubt, the manufacturers will be trying to come up with something different.

The problem is turbo tech in general, not forced induction.
Anyone who has had superchargers installed on their street cars knows the engine and exhaust note doesn't sound much different than with NA.
Escaped gasses are not re-routed back into the engine like a turbo.

No doubt we will be seeing quite a few meltdowns or cars being "crippled" by the heat (assuming the Malaysian temp is "normal") and having to reduce revs.

I also think a big part of power unit sound or lack of it comes not only from the Turbo but the single exhaust. IMO.

It probably plays a part too, as does the reduction in cylinders by 2, but the real culprit is the turbo.

Listen to the sound of the added turbos vs. NA of the very same engine....

Interesting lap time comparison too. :-)

I wish the author had A/B'd the audio a few times during the run so we could get both cars in isolation.

It will be interesting to see how this fiasco plays out in the coming months.
F1 does have a serious problem they need to address.

OT, the Motogp race was awesome! With bikes running at 215+mph and a back and forth battle for the lead between the 'old guy'Rossi and the the'new kid'Marquez. Looks to be an exciting year.

Rossi and Flavio ain't impressed:

Former team boss Flavio Briatore has slammed the new face of Formula 1.

The 63-year-old Italian, absent from F1 in the wake of the ‘crashgate’ scandal, said he watched the Melbourne race last weekend and thought it was “disrespectful” to the spectators and television audience.

“They (the spectators) do not understand why the drivers do not attack, why and how they’re saving fuel, and why champion drivers refuse even to defend their position.

“This was a strange spectacle, leaving behind the most beautiful sport in the world,” Briatore told Italy’s La Gazzetta dello Sport.

He said it was wrong to let the car manufacturers succeed in their push for the all-new regulations, featuring greener engines that use less fuel.

“They delegated the writing of rules to engineers who do not care about the fans or entertainment,” said Briatore.

“The result is terrible. Of course it is true that the principles of the rules are correct, but we must not forget that Formula 1 must be about the competition between drivers.

“Obliging them to drive slowly is contrary to common sense. It’s like introducing a rule that means (Cristiano) Ronaldo can only touch the ball ten times in a match. Now we have the stars (drivers) forced to behave on the track like accountants.

“If Formula 1 does not change again in the near future, then the audience will be lost. Look at the comments on the internet, in blogs, on Twitter — they did not like the Australian Grand Prix. It was an indecipherable and depressing show.

“This new F1 came too fast with too little testing, so at the very beginning (Sebastian) Vettel and (Lewis) Hamilton were missing from the fight. This is unacceptable and now we have chaos.”

Also unhappy with the ‘new’ F1 is the flamboyant MotoGP veteran Valentino Rossi.

“I was expecting something different from the new Formula 1 rules, instead I just found it boring,” the Italian is quoted by Tuttosport.

“I think motorcycles and cars should race with the fuel they need, but what is happening now is just an exercise for the engineers,” added Rossi.

While it's well noted that there ar a lot of unhappy campers, I think we are stuck with the current format. I highly doubt any major changes are in order. There may be some tweeking of the regs, but I'm afraid it is what it is. At this point it's like beating a dead horse to dust. And this is after only one race.

Except for unreliable, uncompetitive cars and a farrago of complex and confusing new rules there isn't a thing wrong with F1 these days, unless, you also want to consider the boring sound of the 2014 engines.

There's big criticism everytime a change is made, which is every few years. Yet, the sport continues to move on, and in time old times are beaten.

While this is true, the last 'major' rule change was lowering the nose hieght. That led to the ugly droop nose on the cars(though Mclaren got it right)it didn't take away from the F1 appeal, the sound. Part of the F1 spectacal is the ear splitting shriek of the exhaust note. Ear plugs, please.

The difference is that one set of rules neutered one series while the misinterpretation of the rules tainted another.

Daniel brought the Porsche to Cars /Coffee the day after they filmed at Leno's Garage. Great guy, told me all about it, I sat in it. Says under 7 minutes at the 'Ring, I said really?? He told me he was sure, as he'd done it several times..
The car will go over 90 Mph in all electric mode, unbelieveable. Sounds great too. Car is in production, starts at 850 K. [Hey GWSat, they are taking orders]. Production cars will be in owners hands this year, most ordered over 3 years ago, sight unseen. I asked him how it compares to the New McLaren and the New Ferrari, he said no comparison

As in the 918 shouldn't be compared to two superior cars? biggrin.gif Seriously though, if he said that implying the 918 is vastly superior to the other two, he is completely clueless or extremely biased. Has he even driven the other two? I highly doubt it. Especially the Ferrari. As soon as someone makes a ridiculous statement like that without hard facts to back up his "opinion", I immediately disregard anything else that comes out of that person's mouth.

That's not surprising. I always wondered why they didn't schedule the race for earlier in the day to avoid the afternoon rains that almost always show up on race weekends.

The pressure is being felt:

FIA President Jean Todt has suggested that the sport's governing body would be open to making Formula One engines louder and less fuel-efficient if that is what spectators want.

Todt's comments were made during an interview with Italian national broadcaster Rai after a lot of criticism for the FIA's decision to move to V6 engines this year occurred following the season opener in Australia last week.

"There should be calm before reaction," Todt told Rai.

"The noise is obviously different now and if there is a problem with it we can look at a way to make it noisier."

Todt added that he does believe that the amount of fuel-saving that is necessary to get to the end of races this year seems excessive.

"I do not want F1 'economy runs', the permitted amount of fuel, 100kg, was proposed by the teams. For me it is not a problem if they want it to be 100kg," Todt added.

However, the former Ferrari boss dismissed suggestions that the fuel-saving measures the teams used in Melbourne was responsible for few passing opportunities arising.

"Instead it is the aerodynamics of the cars and the circuit in Melbourne, for example, has never been very good for overtaking," Todt maintained.

"I am convinced that very soon we will see a lot of overtaking. So let's wait before making judgments."
