Picking up the new silly season from the old silly season here.

Let the driver swaps, the aero swaps and engine swaps commence once again...

I hope this gets shot down before it gains any traction. What next, "competition" cautions?

Really.
This is f_cking ridiculous.

If they want more than 1 pitstop, just make the tires less durable.

Here is something very interesting:

Marussia could merge with Sauber leaving just ten teams on the 2014 Formula One grid, claims a report in the German media.

According to Auto Moto und Sport, Marussia - like many of their rivals - are struggling and face a budget of "76 million euros."

The team's Russian owners are keen to merge with another team and, having failed in a bid to do so with Williams, have targeted Sauber.

Journalist Michael Schmidt claims that "chief Andrei Cheglakov is reportedly fed up with needing to dig deep into his own pockets only to be down the field but he still wants to remain in Formula 1.

"He tried to buy Mercedes motorsport boss Toto Wolff's shares at Williams, that's around 15 percent.

"Bernie Ecclestone is said to have endorsed the deal but Claire Williams rejected it as Williams want to remain independent."

The report continued claiming that Marussia have now set their sights on "joining forces" with Sauber, who are "looking for new sponsors and partners on the Russian market."

As I said in my Austin travelogue, I really fell in love with The Little Team That Could.cool.gif
How they held off Caterham for the final cash-paying spot in the final standings was great stuff.....Jules Bianchi is the man

Shame that Hulk did not get that seat. I hope F.I. fields a good car, assuming that is where he is going.

And hopefully Grosjean will wax this prick in every single session.

Sheesh, the wild tiger that is F1 will be as tame as a house cat if this kind of crap keeps happening.

I don't see what the upside is for them. What does F1 gain by this?

I don't get it either. It is a solution in search of a problem.

I am hopeful it will get killed.

The fact they seemed to have at least one car on-track at all the time made me respect their commitment.
Also, watching Bianchi hold off the 2 Caterhams when they were using their DRS and he couldn't was awesome stuff.
Sheer determination and skill IMO and it went on lap after lap.cool.gif

It's amazing what a year will do. Could you imagine these two pairing up at the beginning of last year? No team would've been able to handle that kind of bad press.

Pastor still doesnt have a great rep, but Romain is now "the whiz kid"

FIA proposes 'pole trophy' for Formula 1's top qualifier from 2014

I would rather see a championship point awarded for pole position, and perhaps one for fast lap. A hat trick (pole, fastest lap, win) would net 27 pts.

This was inevitable (thousands of years of Italian patrician social mores don't go away overnight):

Ferrari President Luca di Montezemolo is set to curb Fernando Alonso's voice on Twitter, forbidding the Spaniard from commenting on Ferrari.

Alonso is one of many Formula One drivers who these days uses Twitter to interact with his fan, opting largely for the frivolous.

"Today arrive my PlayStation 4!! Amazing!" he tweeted on Friday while also talking about his "hair style" needing to be more "aerodynamic" as tufts peaked through his cycling helmet.

And keeping to the frivolous and random updates about his life is all that Alonso will be permitted to do as tweeting about Ferrari and their on-goings is now forbidden.

"I'll forbid it in the sense that Alonso (and I mean Alonso and everyone else) can write anything he wants on Twitter, but when it comes to things concerning Ferrari, these will be said by Ferrari," Marca reports di Montezemolo as having told RAI 1.

"Otherwise we risk creating situations that could upset the atmosphere and the peace within the team, which has been very important this year, in my opinion.

"I've said all year that, first and foremost, we need to watch our behaviour."

This is what Fred just Tweeted:

Fernando Alonso ‏@alo_oficial 40m
Another 2h simulator this morning! Trying to adapt to the new rules as soon as possible! I wish good weekend to all!

I have followed him for maybe two years….he has not, to my recollection, ever tweeted anything that was controversial. He saves all that for the press. :-)

If the 2014 Ferrari is still below par, I expect that he will continue to have choice things to say to the motoring press. This new "restriction" seems designed to make it appear that Luca is putting the clamps on, when in reality, 140 character blasts from Fred should be the least of his worries.

Bernie's take on the Ferrari/Alonso situation:

Bernie Ecclestone says Ferrari need to inspire belief in Fernando Alonso otherwise the Spaniard could lose his enthusiasm.

For the third time in four seasons with the Scuderia, Alonso had to be content with runner-up in this year's Championship while once again Sebastian Vettel had the glory.

While the Red Bull racer dominated the latter half the season, winning nine races in a row to bring his tally to 13 for the season, Alonso only managed two races wins, the last of which was back in May's Spanish Grand Prix.

In an interview this week with Spain's Marca, Ecclestone said: "People think the name Ferrari is enough to win, but... I don't know if the problem is Ferrari or Alonso.

"I hope he hasn't lost any of the enthusiasm he had. The problem is if he doesn't believe the team can give him the car he wants, he'll lose his enthusiasm."

Asked to compare the double World Champion to Red Bull's Vettel, the F1 suprmeo explained: "They are different. Different as drivers and as people, so you can't compare them.

"It depends which one you like. I like Alonso a lot and I like Vettel. Sebastian is closest to the people."

Ecclestone, though, hopes that Formula One has not seen the last of Alonso's title-winning seasons.

"Fernando is a winner, I want to see him win," he added. "I hoped he would win the title this year, to be honest."

This could go a LONG ways towards making better tires for next year:

Three top teams will provide cars so that Pirelli can test its 2014 tires later this month.

Earlier, some teams objected amid rumors McLaren had put its hand up to run its 2013 car for the official tire supplier at a December test in Bahrain.

“It would be unfortunate,” said Mercedes’ Ross Brawn recently, “if one team had the benefit of running a (2014) tire to the exclusion of all the others.”

Now, Italy’s La Gazzetta dello Sport and Autosprint are separately reporting that the 2013-car Bahrain test, to be held Dec. 17-19, will in fact be attended by three teams.

McLaren will not be among the select three: Red Bull, Mercedes and Ferrari. Those three teams finished the constructors’ championship in first, second and third place, respectively.

Autosprint said Lotus, fourth overall in 2013, was also invited, but declined for financial reasons.

McLaren finished the season fifth.

La Gazzetta dello Sport said the collected tire data will be made available to all of the other teams, which are permitted to send observers to Bahrain.

Autosprint correspondent Alberto Antonini, however, said the other teams are not happy to have been effectively locked out of the Bahrain test, handing an early advantage to the 2013 frontrunners.

Let Mercedes sit this one out since they already have an extra test that no one else got. Or they can pay for their own since thats why they got second place and all the extra money that goes with it. That could be their penalty since they really didnt get one this year.

It's been confirmed The Hulk will drive for Force India next year.

Also, here is some interesting comments by Bernie:

Bernie Ecclestone admitted on Monday that he was somewhat disappointed with Fernando Alonso's performances in 2013 and hinted that the two-time World Champion has been looking for a move away from Ferrari.

Alonso finished the season in second place in the Drivers' Championship standings behind Sebastian Vettel for the third time in four years, but his performances couldn't help Ferrari finish higher than third in the Constructors' Champs.

McLaren had made no secret previously that they would welcome the Spaniard back to Woking after he spent an unsuccessful season there in 2007 if he was open to the move.

"I've been a little bit disappointed in Fernando because I'm a big supporter of him and of Ferrari," Ecclestone wrote the official Formula One website's season review.

"I thought he gave up a little bit which is proof that he was looking for another team.

"I don't know whether the team is not competitive because of him or because the people who are running the team aren't getting the job done."

Ecclestone added that Sebastian Vettel is arguably the best Formula One driver of the last 50 years after the German won the last nine races of the season to win his fourth consecutive Drivers' title.

"You probably have to say he's number one of the drivers I've known," Ecclesone added before suggesting that Kimi Raikkonen was the best driver of the year.

"This year I suppose I have to call Kimi the star driver, with the equipment he has.

"I think he was motivated on hope that he was going to get paid. He's a good guy to have in a team. He's super, he's a racer."

The 83-year-old Ecclestone was also impressed with Pirelli, despite complaints from the paddock about the rapid degradation of their tyres.

"Pirelli did a wonderful job for us. I told them we don't want tyres that last the race, we want tyres that nobody knows how they are going to last. We've also got that with the new engines next year," he continued.

However, Ecclestone believes the new FIA regulations which sees teams switch from to V8 engines will have a negative effect on spectator numbers.

"I still think what we have now is good, I don't think there was any need to change it," he concluded.
