This should be interesting. I'm looking forward to seeing how they do.

Very unusual to see a live production on TV. I hope it does well and we can get more Broadway type shows.

I watched the making of a few weeks ago and have the upcoming event scheduled to record, looking forward to it(but then again I was apparently one of the few that liked Smash so I'm probably not the demo advertisers want)......

The last Broadway-type show that actually was about a Broadway show didn't fare so well. tongue.gif

Also looking forward to this but don't agree with the casting of Carrie Underwood as the lead. I know, I know - she's a big draw these days and is a regular winner/presenter on all those country music awards show. Let's face it - nobody is as enthusiastic about patting themselves on the back as the country music industry. They must have a dozen of those shows, all televised to big ratings.

What, Amanda Seyfried wasn't available?

The "making of .." was a good show. Great looking cast. Carrie is a good singer, but I prefer Julie's smoother voice.

Carrie is a monster on the charts all 17 of her country singles have hit #1 or #2.

Yeah, I get that and I understand that's why she was cast. She certainly has no previous qualifications for this kind of role. I just don't think she was the best choice, IMO. Seyfried would have been a big improvement. She already has a musical resumé, would bring a certain amount of star power, and is flat-out gorgeous. Just sayin'.

Ah yes, it'll have that authentic Salzburg-area twang that I remember so well from my last trip there.

I read an article the other day that this is being broadcast live from Grumman Studios in Bethpage, NY. I've explored around there on bike a few times and it's pretty cool how they took the old airplane/nasa hangers and re-purposed them for movies. They recently filmed much of the next Spiderman there.

http://syosset.patch.com/groups/arts-and-entertainment/p/grumman-studios-sending-sound-of-music-into-orbit-syosset

Looks like no live studio audience though frown.gif

Did anyone see the Making of The Sound of Music special the other night? Was anything about this being from Grumman there?

The fact she's the voice (now) of the network's Sunday Night Football probably didn't hurt either.

Didn't even think of that, but it very likely entered into the equation. Networks love synergy and cross-promotion.

Carrie's the best female vocalist in the format currently, so her casting makes sense. I'm not sure her propensity for bellowing will really lend itself to the songs in this musical, though. I chalk this up to the current trend of only allowing sequels and remakes to make it past pre-production, because the networks are too scared to try anything new, what with how much shows cost to make these days.

I would assume country, which we used to call pop :D

I also like that they cast Carrie and if it weren't for her I may not have watched the original show in the first place and set this event to record :)

I guess if one doesn't care for Carrie there are lots of other things to watch that don't include her....

I'm sure I'll be stuck by lightning for this, but I kinda hope the wheels fall off mid-broadcast like "Scrooged" and the only thing that saves it is Mary Lou Retton catapulting out to say "God bless us, every one"

I'm sure there were may nay sayers when Julie Andrews got the film role over Mary Martin and several others in the Broadway production. I'm gonna see where it takes me. This is live stage production, not a film that allows many retakes to make it perfect....

Glad I read about this in Hot Off the Press.  It's listed in PSIP as  "NBC Special" with no information.

Even the online schedule for our local NBC affiliate KGW merely lists it as "NBC Special". However, the NBC web site does tell us it is the Sound of Music Special!

My very humble setup:
Man Cave:Vizio E500i-A1 "Smart TV" (50-in 1080p 120Hz LED/LCD, has Netflix app.), Blu-ray players (Sony BDP-S3100, old LG BD390), Roku (the original model: N1000), PC (Windows 7), Comcast Internet (25Mbps/5Mbps).
Bedroom:LG 32LV3400-UA TV (32-in 768p 60Hz LED/LCD), HD DVR (Motorola RNG200N), Xfinity Comcast cable (Digital Starter Package), DVD/VHS player.

TWC's EPG has it listed and described correctly. Maybe the guides are just slow to catch up.

Since the original Broadway Maria was Mary Martin, Underwood is in very good company.  I remember seeing Martin on a talk show, telling how during a rehearsal she flubbed Maria's line when she introduced herself to Georg and called herself "Luise Rainer" instead of Maria Rainer; the apology that she improvised for the character came out in Martin's native full-on Texas twang.  Heck, where do you think Larry Hagman learned the twang he would use as J. R. Ewing?  He was shaking what his mama gave him.

The entire production is live. The CD soundtrack was recorded in the studio.

A live show, but done without a studio audience. Odd choice. I would have thought the energy of a live theatrical performance, complete with audience, would have motivated and encouraged the actors - as live theater tends to do.

Watching it on a delay.

The first song, the theme song -- I can't understand why they dissolved for each transition. confused.gif as opposed to just cutting from one camera to another. This looked very jarring and amateurish.

As noted earlier on this thread, this is going on live at Grumman Studios in Bethpage, Long Island. Spiderman 2 spent most of this year occupying this space and Gold Coast stages a stone throw away.

So far this a little uncomfortable but the night is young.

It would be difficult for an audience to be situated with these elaborate sets-- and with the cameras and lighting etc. It's more in the style of an early television live broadcast from several decades ago.

Seems like solo voice and speech pickup has very high background noise pickup.
