CBS lied to us that it is in HD.

You do know that it doesn't have to be widescreen to be in HD, right?

Oh. The earlier widescreen part made it look like HD. I thought CBS messed up in showing a SD one.

Upscaling to 1080p doesn't make it HD, either. It makes it an upscale, and that second image is so blurry that I'd hardly expect it to be from a restored HD version scanned from the original recordings (or the masters were in terrible shape). The widescreen conversion was also probably achieved through cropping, so you may have been watching an upscaled pan and scan broadcast. frown.gif

Ugh. CBS tricked us with its HD graphic overlay message. :/ FYI< http://www.cbs.com/shows/holiday_central/video/lB4elRGG_LEWYx_Fo9NjkjOLsDNyUiDf/holiday-special-i-love-lucy/ ...

In all fairness, that screenshot was not representative of the actual image quality of the broadcast. It looked HD to me, and not like an upconvert. Way better than I've ever seen any episode of I Love Lucy look before. I believe the OP was confused by seeing promos of the show in widescreen, while the broadcast was OAR.

Yeah, that was confusing me. CBS was misleading the viewers like me. frown.gif It made it more confusing with CBS' HD graphic overlay when the Christmas specials episode #1 started.

I'm not a big fan of colorization either but I know why they do it, neither of my kids(both of the demo advertisers love) refuse to watch(or have a very strong aversion) to anything B&W

I have lots of classic B&W movies on DVD but they run for the hills every time I put one in :(

We watched it, too. It certainly looked HD, but I expect the blu-rays will look much better. Broadcast always looks worse (too smooth, no detail, etc.) than BD.

The colorization wasn't too bad. It was strange how intense the colors were on the Xmas episode, but much more muted on the "grape" episode.

Agreed. HD on 50 year old source material rolleyes.gif. I thing the original broadcasts were just fine. Colorization is just plain bastardization of the media.

As long as it was shot on film and the recordings are in good shape, an HD conversion is possible.

The first image definitely has more detail than the second, although I wouldn't call it amazingly crisp. For grins and giggles, here are some comparison shots:

lucy1scale.png

lucy2scale.png

Both images were downscaled to DVD resolution (704x480) and then upscaled back to 1920x1080 using spline36 each time. The first image shows the most degradation around the stockings and fireplace to me, while the second image looks almost the same. I can see a little blurring on the clock/barometer (?) behind the tree, though.

Remember that "I Love Lucy" was the first TV show shot with multiple 35mm film cameras. I would have to imagine that CBS (or the production company that owns the rights) scanned the 35mm film at HD video resolution (or even higher) before beginning the colorization process. As long as the vertical resolution is above 720p or 1080i, a video is considered HD, whether it is 4x3 or 16x9.

Looked HD to me ,the cast members looked much older than on the regular episodes I have seen through the years. Also you could see the tons of makeup they used.
