I don't understand why NBC still hasn't posted their TV schedule yet.

The "TV Listings" page is empty.

EDIT: this page is no longer empty. It now works.

But you must first enter your zip code in the first box, and then the dropdown list in the second box activates to pick your provider. And then finally the third box will (for me anyway) self-populate with your local OTA broadcast network.

Unfortunately the interface is still not great, and you can only slide the schedule to the right or left a complete 2 1/2 hours at a time, with each new day that gets selected resetting the timeline back to 10AM on the left. Oh well.

And there's still no way to show all content in a given 24-hour period for just one channel at a time, which you'd think would be an obvious need and implemented simply by clicking on the channel logo on the left of each row. Oh well.

Pretty dreadful, if this is their final version.

Quote:
The "Viewers Guide" page contains nothing useful.

EDIT: This page contains information, but upon initial opening the two links down a bit which supposedly point to (1) Full day-by-day Sochi competition schedule, and (2) Complete Sochi Olympics TV listings, well they initially come up appearing as links but they're not actually "active". Eventually these links self-activate themselves (I think something was going on in other simultaneously open Firefox browser tabs for the NBC site that might have delayed this), so this is also definitely erratic and unfriendly... and definitely not working 100% to help viewers.

However even when the links become active, the pages to which the links lead are not working properly! For example that first "competition schedule day-by-day" Sochi Schedule page has what appear to be its own active links to get more info on the events of that day. But when you click on those links nothing happens! They're links, but they link to nothing apparently... not even 404.

And the second "Complete Sochi Olympics TV listings" link goes to the same "TV Listings" page as I talked about up top. But now the page is completely inoperative, even though my zip code and provider are filled in (probably from cookies). However the third field which is theoretically for my local broadcast network's call letters, well this area is asking for my zip code and the dropdown shows nothing. And you cannot even enter your zip code in that third field.

Absolutely disgracefully inoperative only one day out from going "live". Shameful.

Quote:
And the so-called "Complete Sochi Olympics TV Listings" page is 404.

EDIT: well, this page is no longer 404. It now actually DOES go to the "TV Listing" page.

However apparently it is still broken and non-functional and inoperative if you get to it some other way aside from the very first entry to that page in your browser session. In other words, it DID work when I was providing my edited comments above at the top of this post, for the first link above. But now that I've also reached it within this same browser session from other secondary links pointing to it... well, it just doesn't work AT ALL!!!

Really a scandal, and I'm sure we'll be reading about it in the mainstream media and other forums.

EDIT UPDATE: seems like my original comments are due for a review and possible edit, since we're now only one day away from the start of TV coverage. See my edited revisions in-stream above.

NOTE: I've built my own TitanTV "Favorites" list, for just the NBC family channels. That should get me exactly what I need.

Similar favorites constructed for my DVR.

Just checked my Tivo and the first occurrence of the Sochi games is 7PM CT 2/6. Funny thing is for a description it says "Figure Skating, Snowboarding, Freestyle Skiing"

I can't remember, doesn't the winter Olympics have a opening ceremony? Also isn't 7pm CT something like 5am Sochi time....wonder if it's playing live on one of the cable channels?

Regardless I've almost cleared off my HDD  and starting 2/6 it will be recording pretty much everything available to me :) I don't really care for most professional sports but I love the Olympics!

I'm pretty sure it'll be tape delayed as will most major events......the only live programming'll be on the NBC Sports Network afaik.[the opening cermeonies'll be on 2/6 at 7:30pm et on NBC]

If a movie or concert video or a TV show isn't on blu ray it darn well should be.

Actually the opening ceremony will be on Friday, February 7. The last couple of Olympics, they have been doing some events before the OC (last time in London it was a couple of soccer games). This is the first time the NBC broadcast network will be starting before the OC.

(BTW the complete NBC Olympic TV schedule has been available at the NBCOlympics.com website for the last two weeks).

Here is a Sochi TV schedule that breaks down the coverage hours, courtesy of SportsMediaWatch.com

One other interesting thing for the coverage this time.

NBC will apparently be showing the figure skating events TWICE this time. Once LIVE on NBCSN and then taped (with separate commentators) on NBC. My guess is that this will be a test run for a future Olympic broadcasting model (because everyone is bitching about a tape-delayed Olympics). Because Rio will be taking place in EDT, most of those events will be live. This may be practice for 2018 in North Korea and 2020 in Tokyo).

NBC did announce that once again they will be livestreaming all events.

Please provide the URL page link you are referring to which shows the schedule.

As I quoted in my first post of this thread, the TV schedule page was "empty", i.e. non-functional for me and none of the "active controls" worked. There was NOT schedule presented, nor any functional way to get anything for any day.

Are you using IE or Firefox or what?? Popup blocker active or not? Ads blocked or not?

The link for the SportsMediaWatch schedule was linked at the bottom of my page.

Also, here is the link to NBCOlympics. Just enter your pay TV provider and your zip code and the schedule will automatically pop up.

BTW I am using IE10 with popup blocker. I have no problem pulling up the website.

That's exactly the page I quoted in my first post, and which didn't work for me. Doesn't work using IE10 or Firefox v26.

There is no way to enter cable company. I can enter zip code, but the other items are non-functional. The dropdown list for cable provider doesn't present anything. Same with local NBC station dropdown.

Doesn't matter if I enable popups or block them, the web page just doesn't work for me. Win7 Pro x64.

AHA!!! Just figured it out!!! I run AdBlock Plus as well, on both Firefox and IE. And sure enough NBC programmed this page to utilize functionality and technique that AdBlock considers to be an "ad", and is thus blocked. Once I disabled AdBlock for the nbcolympics.com site sure enough the TV listings page is now operational!

It's still a HORRIBLY UNFRIENDLY schedule format page. You can't pick a particular time, but rather you must scroll horizontally until you get to a "frame" that includes the time you're looking for. And if you click on a new day, the presentation once again starts back at 10AM rather than say remaining at 8PM primetime like you were just looking at for a different day. What if you only want to look at primetime??? Hackers.

It's a horrible format. I hope they get it somewhat fixed before the Olympics start so I'll know when the sports I want to see will be on live.

I just know I may well be "upside down" for two weeks, wanting to either watch "live" or "nearly live".

I can't avoid going to my normal everyday web pages for news (e.g. CNN and HuffingonPost) and they've apparently given up on trying to hide pictures and results of important sports events which are inevitably blasted on the home page so that you cannot avoid seeing results of something which you might not have actually watched on TV yet (say because NBC has decided to tape-delay the telecast for primetime airing, especially to the West Coast).

So the only solution (as it was these past two weeks with the Australian Open) is to watch TV overnight "live" or "nearly live" (say via DVR recording delayed by an hour or two so that I can skip through commercials). That means "upside down" life for 16 days, or even worse... hardly any sleep for 16 days.

Of course this is really only for the "favorite" events. I can defer watching curling for a month or two (though I WILL record it and I WILL eventually watch it) and not feel I'm enjoying it any less. But figure skating and skiing, well I'd want to be right up to date while it's happening. Some things I'll just pass on, like hockey and half-pipe and other X-Games-like sports which simply have no appeal or interest to me.

The nbcolympics.com/tv-listings  doesn't work for me either(blank listings and I can't input provider or station), I'm also running ABP, the sportsmediawatch.com does work for me though. IMO kind of stupid that NBCs site would be written in a format that ABP would consider SPAM but whatever, I'll just use the second site for my info.

As a test, I went to the NBC site and it loads for me. Linux with Opera.

But, the form really needs work. I put in the zip code and it thinks that my local NBC affiliate is WREX, which is in Rockford, IL. Not even close to my zip code. It even gets the cable co location wrong.

Oh wait, the page reloaded and is getting things right... almost. It still lists the wrong location for the cable company.

I agree that this website format really sucks.

Or, you can disable ABP for the nbcolympics.com site, and then the page becomes functional. Yes, you see ads for "olympics mittens", but it's not so terrible.

What IS terrible is the non-static non-matrix non-spreadsheet design of this TV listings page! It's really very unfriendly for finding out what's on TV at a specific time of day. It always starts at 10AM when you pick a day and you have to scroll horizontally through the hours of the day. Also, there doesn't appear to be a way to click on a channel and see everything that's on that channel for the entire 24-hour period of that day.

RIDICULOUS!!

If they don't change this then I, too, will look elsewhere or just stick with TitanTV (which is of course standard matrix glorious TV listings customized to your heart's content to show just what you want to show).

Once you enter the zip code, don't you then have a dropdown list available in the second box to select the correct cable provider for that zipcode, from a list of several available? And once I did that (picking Time Warner Cable / Hollywood) the third box auto-populated with KNBC, which is correct.

Nevertheless, this was apparently programmed by true rookies. Very surprising, given all the prior experience NBC's had now. The summer London Olympics TV listings pages were superb.

Do you have AdBlock Plus installed? Something similar? Try disabling it for this site.

Correct. You need to disable AdBlock Plus for that www.nbcolympics.com site, or you can disable it only specifically for the TV Listing page... assuming that's the site you want to use for your TV schedule.

I can't get www.nbcolympics.com to work. But http://www.sportsmediawatch.com is working.

And local newspapers always give extensive TV schedule info for Olympics, and for your time zone.

NBC is trying to better sell NBCSN to cable operators. That's why they're putting the most popular sport in the Winter Olympics live on their network. What that does to NBC's airing remains to be seen, but this is the last Olympics in Europe for awhile. 2018 and 2020 will probably look like the 2008 Olympics where NBC showed live events during primetime (well, at least to the East coast)

This is television. It has nothing to do with people, it's to do with ratings! For fifty years, we've told them what to eat, what to drink, what to wear. So what do we do? We give 'em what they want!

If this is true then I'm going to have to sample the difference and see what I want to spend my time on. Turns out the commentators make a HUGE difference in viewer enjoyment, with the familiar experts with familiar voices greatly adding to the enjoyment for anybody who follows the sport.

Back in 2002 when HDTV coverage was new ("hey Todd" and the Sony commercial that repeated hundreds of times), and the digital NBC HD coverage was sponsored and paid for by Mark Cuban and handled by HDNet from their own set of trucks, using a completely separate camera and announcing crew than what was being used for SD NBC, it turns out that although I wanted to watch the HD coverage the HDNet announcers were so "rookie" and ignorant compared to the network alternatives, I ended up watching BOTH... just to get the broadcast commentary. Actually, the camera work was also very different, with the camera locations for HDNet being very different than they were for broadcast SD NBC. And in those days, the lighting in the skating arena had not yet been perfected for HD, and the ice at the Delta Arena looked more gray in color than pure white as it does today.

Thankfully it was possible to watch both back then, because the total number of TV hours in 2002 was far less than it is today.

Anyway, presumably the NBCSN announcers this time will not be as amateurish as the HDNet announcers were. We'll see if watching a "live" event recording provides any more enjoyment and thrill than watching the edited version shown in primetime, given that both will be HD this time. Hopefully NBC will not "jump around" in the primetime show to ruin the continuity of the actual competitive event which can only be conveyed if "live" coverage stays with that competition continuously (same as happened with the infamous "Tripleplay" pay-per-view cable experiment for the Barcelona games, which actually was UNBELIEVABLY ENJOYABLE as they had 12-hours of live coverage with no commercial interruption, and then a 12-hour repeat, in each 24-hour day).

Based on past Winter Olympics, I'm 99.99% sure NBC will "jump around" while airing the figure skating finals in primetime. NBC wants to sustain the ratings through primetime, so from 8-10pm, I wouldn't be surprised to see other events from the day interspersed with figure skating, followed by all figure skating after 10pm or so (this is what they have done in the past).

The announcers calling the live figure skating for NBCSN are Terry Gannon, Tara Lipinski, and Johnny Weir. Certainly not the varsity squad, but not inexperienced. I'm not a huge figure skating fan, but I get that choice as a matter of preference. Even still, 1 airs live and the other airs 10-12 hours later. So if you're talking about thrill and enjoyment, wouldn't you rather watch it live instead of waiting when you might know the results? Does the difference in announcers make that much of a difference for you?

And yes, the Triplecast.. simultaneously 1 of the best things and 1 of the worst things NBC ever did to its Olympic coverage.

I agree with this sentiment, but remember.. NBC is doing something here they've never done before. They're airing an event that was already televised earlier in the day. So I don't know if that changes the formula for them a little bit.

NBC''s primetime program will probably be even MORE processed and "packaged" for the female and non-sports fan audience, especially with figure skating. With the earlier live airing of the competition, they're throwing a bone to the people who wanted it, which frees up the pimetime broadcast to be business as usual.

I am surprised that nobody brought up the fact that this Russian Olympics is a chance at redemption for the National Broadcasting Company. The last time the network was scheduled to broadcast a Russian Olympics, it was a disaster because we stayed home. NBC reduced the coverage to mere highlights instead of prime time coverage. Hopefully with all the terror threats it won't be another disaster for NBC.

I went and looked at the schedule they have now. Seems pretty dismal for what they are actually showing on TV and I agree with IceAgeTom that the final product will probably be packaged for women and non-sports folks.

Unlike the London summer Olympics where they had a seemingly much more normal and predictable weekday and weekend TV schedule on the various networks involved in the coverage, this time it seems much more random and unpredictable. Perhaps that's due to the requirements and complexity of trying to cover things "truly live" on the off-channels overnight while also building an edited tape-delayed "repeat" package for showing during the next day and prime time that night.

Certainly makes it very tough to try and set up DVR recordings manually.

So, I've given up on doing it manually. And the NBC TV Schedule page is awful. I've created my own "Favorites" schedule on the DVR for the handful of stations being used, so that I can see what's on conveniently if I'm at the TV. Also, I've created a similar "Favorites" channel list at TitanTV, so that I can also see what's on conveniently if I'm at the PC.

Thankfully the whole thing (on all channels) is titled consistently in the GUIDE (for WMC, anyway). So I've simply set a "series recording" for that title, specifying "new" and "any HD channel" and "any time". It seems to have picked up everything, at least that is known in the GUIDE at this time. I will manually review the upcoming schedule for the next day late every night (before the next day's "live coverage" recordings start), just to be sure I'm not recording hockey and X-Games events if the Guide will provide that much accurate info.

Of course, letting the DVR do the scheduling doesn't take into account "running long", or any unexpected changes in the broadcast schedule or channels being used for something special. So I'm sure this will turn out to be a real mess when I finally come back to look at it.

Or, maybe it will be a "real joy". Only time will tell, once things get started.

But I do look forward to what is hopefully "live start-to-finish" event coverage, with 100% continuity (broken up only by commercials!!) so that we get the feeling that we are truly "at the actual event session" with a ticket for the best seat in the house, and get to see even the Jamaican bobsled team when they actually race.

Not really, my Tivo has an Olympics collection already defined so I just tell it to show upcoming broadcasts for this (across all channels) and then I pick the ones I want to record based on the very clear event descriptions for all of them. I scheduled everything I wanted up until the end of the current guide (2/13) in about ten minutes. Will do the rest in another week or so.
