I watched Episode 1 of Penny Dreadful tonight and liked it a lot. I was particularly fond of Eva Green's performance. She has a rare combination of beauty and edginess that work well in the show. I also liked Timothy Dalton, who I think has been woefully underestimated over the course of his long career. Josh Hartnett was all right but struck me as just another beefcake pretty boy from central casting. He is a big good-looking fellow whose acting skills seem to me to be adequate but little more. Anyway I am looking forward to more.

I learned to my delight earlier that my cable provider, Cox, and SHO finally got together and made a deal so that Cox customers could use SHO Anytime at long last. Imagine my disappointment, then, when shortly thereafter I discovered that SHO Anytime does not support mirroring to an Apple TV. Oh well, I will just wait for Episode 2 to be televised so that I can see and hear it on my 1080p display and 5.1 audio system.

Off topic a bit, but whatever became of Vlad Dracula, the JMS show for Starz?

Agreed on all accounts. Hopefully it stays good through the season.

Thought it was good, not great or wow, just a good show. They really spoon feed you things and then they seem to want you to be surprised. The talk with Frankenstein, they basically recapped everything everyone knows about him, show a body being resurrected and then its like they wanted us to be shocked when they revealed his name. Was kind of odd.

Well, it you liked Eva Green's performance in episode 1, than ep 2 will please you double. After her scene (you'll know)...you'll be like WTF just happened.

Pretty crazy stuff in ep 2.

Finally watched Ep 1 last night. Kind of a supernatural Ripper St. Not scary but more of horror mystery.
I think it's going to be a good interesting story & worth watching smile.gif

what, no Wolfman? wink.gif I hope it's not going to be a clone of the Van Helsing movie tongue.gif

I didn't say that you did. I politely requested that IF you are going to discuss it (any further), that you use spoiler tags. Thanks for the attitude though. Very productive.

Because I had succeeded in repressing my memory of the woeful Wolfman remake (5.8 Stars out of 10 according to IMDB), I had forgotten that Benicio del Toro, a fine actor, had also played Larry Talbot. What must have Joe Johnston have been thinking? smile.gif More seriously, I thought The Wolfman remake was a sad waste of the talents of a fine director and his talented ensemble cast, including Anthony Hopkins, Emily Blunt, and Hugo Weaving.

WHOA. Between the seance scene and the final surprise appearance what an edge of your seat episode! I have to say that I was confused as all get out during the seance. I thought the voice was Mina's but then I read it was Sir Malcolm's son, which threw me off. And are they throwing a potential incest relationship in there? CRAZY!

Eva Green was astounding in the seance scene. The contortions and multiple voices were incredible. It was an Emmy worthy performance. She is one the most interesting actresses working. Her performance in 300 Rise of an Empire was the highlight of the film and her work in the short lived Camelot was also excellent. The closer involving Mr. Proteus and who was hiding within was mind blowing.

Does Showtime offer some sort of sneak peak or advance viewing of episodes .. ?? I only ask because my DVR picked up Episode 2 as new on Sunday, yet your post is a week old .. ?? confused.gif

Yes, the next one was available immediately after the airing of the first episode.

So Showtime aired the first two episodes back to back .. ?? I don't know why my DVR did not catch both at that time .. oh well, I've got both, which is all that really matters ..

I was getting to like Mr. Proteus. The arrival of his inner self definitely did not make a dent on their CGI budget.

As it seems to have done to everybody else, Eva Green's bravura performance in the seance scene made the hair stand up on the back of my neck. Speaking of necks, how about Vanessa's head doing a 360 while she was in her trance? Can anybody say "The Exorcist?" What wonderfully written and performed television it was. Penny Dreadful is the most elegant horror story I have ever seen on film.

It turns out that Reeve Carney, who plays Dorian Gray is a Broadway musical theater star, he created the role of Peter Parker in Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark. He can really sing and I think his performance as Dorian Gray has been terrific. He uses his pretty boy good looks brilliantly. Anyway, Penny Dreadful is a terrific series, a winner by any measure.
