I have enjoyed this season with each out on their own (with their own flashbacks/backstory, etc..), but I enjoyed the group dynamic of the previous seasons a bit more.
The cast is excellent- when they are together- it's pure entertainment!
If this season doesn't win awards- then no show should win any...
Couldn't agree more. The addition of Brian Cox as Ethan's father is another big plus (Wes Studi was the first one this season). He is a wonderful actor who adds substance to any show or movie that he appears in. His description of the Apache attack on his home was chilling. Great writing and great delivery.
I watch dramatic content exclusively on blu-ray. Gave up drama straight from broadcast years ago. Just finished S-2 on blu. I am persuaded, a true believer -- I drank the Kool Aid, or witches brew, of this most excellent show -- one of the absolute best things on TV, from production values to casting to dialog -- made all the more challenging because the genre can so easily slip into manifest absurdity.
But what you have here are real human issues, characters, drama, and enough time to sink deep into all the interworking relationships. Simply superb! Eva Green is so so so so sublime, so committed, so raw, so present -- her dedication to craft literally makes me weep -- not even from whatever emotion she is trying to convey, or what is internal to the story, but her absolute surrender to the moment of creation of her breathtaking art has brought tears to my eyes......
I agree that that was some great acting England, but I am now more drawn in to what's going on in the western U.S. As an old fart I like my shoot-em-ups.
Another great episode last night. They cover so much ground in one hour. Dorian and Lily's "young apprentice" is turning out to be crazier and more bloodthirsty than either of them. I was surprised that Hecate bit the dust so soon. There was a lot of potential here. Josh Harnett has been terrific and for a moment I thought that Ethan was somehow going to become his lupine alter ego in the chapel or maybe even at the dinner table without the full moon being present. That would have been something. Poor Vanessa. Dracula has baited her and appears to be reeling her in. I can't wait to see how she wriggles of the hook and delivers justice to the old bloodsucker. When she does, I hope that she growls "know your master" again. At first I thought that Caliban was going to put a pillow over his son's face to ease his suffering. It was heartbreaking when the boy saw him and began screaming. The poor creature can't catch a break. I do wonder about whether he will reconnect with Lily and become part of her and Dorian's conquest of humanity club. When Lily delivered that powerful soliloquy to him last season, he seemed more terrified than anything else.
It's just like real life. Look at some of the serial killers that no one would ever suspect of such behavior. They used that fake empathy, or community service, to fool people.
Honeysuckle Weeks? Really? And I thought that Tuppence Middleton (from the recent War and Peace mini-series) was bizarre. The Brits really know how to name their kids.
Once again, an episode that covered a lot of ground. Dorian's betrayal of Lily, after watching her go off the rails with her man hating/maiming prostitute army, was not a complete surprise but how he did it was. Ethan's Apache "father" seeing the vision of Vanessa being possessed and her submission to Dracula was well done. The two episode finale next week ought to be gangbusters.
So Lily who is railing against the oppression of men has both men in her life, Dorian and Victor, forcing ultimate oppression of her, by chemical restraint.
Vanessa was quick to make the connection with Mr. Sweet and Dracula. I guess the End of Days is okay as long as Dracula is a considerate lover.
I've been waiting to binge watch Season 3...have all the episodes on my DVR...plan on watching them after this week's episode airs...only 1 episode remaining after this week
^ no better or worse that seasons one or two... but I consider both of those outstanding.
This season featured more individual rather than group stories... with some extremely powerful performances by Eva G. in her segments.
In any case, I'd be amazed if your were disappointed by season three.
I didn't realize that the season 3 finale was this coming Sunday...apparently they're showing 2 episodes this Sunday...I was planning on binge watching with 1 episode remaining to catch up before the finale but it looks like I'm going to have to binge watch the first 7 episodes starting tonight!
I didn't find the "finale" to be particularly good. 1st, it wasn't the advertised "2-hour special event", more like 1:20 with a LONG commercial interruption. Talk about driving viewers away.
The story seemed to just fizzle, like they made a last minute decision to end it all. All in all not a great end to a great series, if that's what its meant to be.
Like all things, YMMV. I enjoyed the 2 hour finale although I wish we would have seen more of the brilliant Eva Green. It did seem like a series closer and John Logan, the principal show runner just confirmed that last night was indeed, the end of the show. It's a great interview: http://www.ew.com/article/2016/06/20/penny-dreadful-series-finale-john-logan
I wanted a showdown between Chandler (in wolf form) and Dracula! That's where it was headed and we never got it! We also never got to see Dracula's true form. He wasn't even that scary - the other vampire monstrosity in Season 1 was far more threatening.
No way it was planned this way! Why would they introduce new characters, when not for Season 4?! And for our well known characters is so much left to do! They are idiots to kill off such an awesome show!
Yeah! The world would have been saved, if Chandler would have killed Dracula! The Apache said so. Anyone could have placed a bullet into Vanessa, no need for a Werewolf.
When they all suited up and made their way to Dracula's lair, I wondered, why they wouldn't wait for nightfall and let the two werewolves do their thing?!
Vanessa has beaten the Devil in Season 2, now it would have been up to Chandler to beat Dracula this season.
I thought it a fantastic series and season. This season the acting of Rory Kinnear and Eva Green was some of the best I can remember seeing on TV; or perhaps anywhere. What a tragedy if there really isn't another season or more.
I really enjoyed the series. I also thought we got shorted Eva Green in the last 2 eps but Billie Piper and Rory Kinnear were the last 2 eps MVPs fittingly as Frankenstein's creations showing more humanity than the humans they interacted with.
Regarding Logan's article in EW and elsewhere :It seems it was really a love letter to Green from Logan and he just wouldn't go on without Vanessa the character that surely needed to be put out of her "misery" which would equal either embrace her faith in God or reject it according to Logan. So the fact there was no showdown between Dracula and Ethan is irrelevant since it was all about her and pretty much all the other characters were just there to enrich her world.
Well I'm not buying it, it's obvious that there were a lot of direction that the show was ready to strikeout to, but cut short unexpectedly. I'm pretty sure that Showtime gave a greenlight for at least one more season, but something happened along the way that we are not privy to.
Totally agree! They introduced new characters that were interesting and could have built a great many stories around. The ending although a satisfying ending for Vanessa left everyone else up in the air. Not cool Logan
Yeah, I was disappointed by the finale. Wanted to see werewolf vs Dracula. Everything was building up to a confrontation, but it went in another direction. Ever since "Lily Frankenstein" was introduced, I looked forward to seeing Ethan meeting her and what his reaction would be to the resurrected Brona, but no dice.
I absolutely loved the show .. so much great acting, fantastic sets, compelling and touching stories .. why it never really caught on as much watch TV I have no idea ..
When the final credits rolled and said "The End" ,, I knew it was over .. and I'll miss it ..
so I just finished binge watching Season 3...when I heard that the show was cancelled I was disappointed...I also thought that Showtime cancelled it after the season ended but apparently the season was written all along as a final season and the showrunner (John Logan) wanted to keep the ending a surprise and he didn't want to tip his hand by announcing Season 3 as the 'final' one...looking back on the season it definitely feels like an ending as so many stories seemed to have a satisfying conclusion...yes there are still some things left open ended (Lily) but overall it felt right...the final episode was really well done and a beautiful end for Vanessa
overall I thought Season 3 was disappointing though...too many stories dragged...they kept most of the characters separated for too long, the Ethan story in America was boring and the Creature's storyline was OK but not as good as previous years...the best part was Lily...her and Frankenstein's story was fantastic...overall even though it was the weakest season of the 3 the overall show was excellent...really great characters, actors and setting...I'm sad to see it end so abruptly but I'd rather see them end on their own terms
the more I think about it, something definitely seems strange about the show ending...I remember showrunner John Logan mentioning that his original vision for the show as 5 seasons...plus they introduced some cool new characters this season such as Catriona, Dr. Seward and Dr. Jekyll...I also thought that when Dr. Lyle mentioned he was leaving on an expedition for Egypt where he specifically mentioned Imhotep, I thought for sure they were setting up the Mummy as the Season 4 villain...the only dangling plot thread I wish they had tied up better was Ethan meeting Lily (formerly Brona)
