With the number of card acts this year...

On this week's episode of Brain Games, they had card wizard - Andrei Jikh.

I have a conspiracy theory that the judges were told not to give 2-2 tie. All of the quaterfinals, the credit rolling came so soon that there simply wasn't time to go to the actual votes if it were 2-2 tie. Heidi didn't get to speak at the judges' save this week, not that I value her opinion much anyway.

But not if you never hit play again. Just FF from beginning to end. You see enough of each celebration to figure out who won

Last night wasn't the first time this season the credits have been rolling while a judge spoke. I go back to what I posted earlier. In football terms, they are not managing the clock well. But the more I think about that; it appears they've changed their format this year. Keep the suspense 'til the very last second.

That aside, the judges know beforehand whom they have to choose from, and their selection. Their hemming and hawing is nothing more than theatrics. Its live TV. Nothing is left to chance.

Well the show certainly didn't expect Howard linking Nick and Mariah's wedding night to pressure to perform this week in the mist of their marital problems.

The 1st semi finals and my takes are:

The Bad:
Bad Boys of Ballet - Little edgier or badder than before which is good. But still I wanted to fast forward their act
Mara - She tonned down her emotion a bit but still made my ears hurt. She's 12 but wanted to sing with grown up emotion, that won't work.
Paul Leti - Bad on the lower register
David and Leeman - I have never seen a magic act talk so much. Again, I couldn't tell if they are a comedy or magic act but their act is short on magic for sure.
Migual Dakota -Not a good song choice for him.

The So So:
Mike Super - A run of the mill disappear and re-appear act. How he got the florecent paint on the audience hands was a good trick but I still don't like magician who talks a lot.
Aerial Animation -There was some dead air in the act that looks like she mis-timed something
Flight Crew - Some mis-cue in their performance

The Good:
Emily West - The best singer other than Quintavios. She already had a record deal and it showed that she's a seasoned veteran.
Sons of Serendip - A fine but not exciting performance.
Audrey Moraru - Botched the finla move but still a excellent performance.
Dan Natureman - I liked his last routine more. Heidi needed to lighten up a bit as all comedy acts tend to offend some sections of the population willingly or unwillingly. But now I know why there're no German comedians.

My top few favorites from last night's performance were:

  1. Emily West (singer)
  2. Flight Crew Jump Rope
  3. Sons of Serendip (musicians/singers)
  4. Mike Super (without Desmond)

Maybe I enjoy magic too much (after all, my DVRing includes "Penn & Teller: Fool Us", "Wizard Wars" and "Masters of Illusion"). I thought last night was Mike Super's best performance.

The one act I least liked was Dan Naturman (comedian). His preceding act was funny, but last night I just didn't like any of his routine.

My very humble setup:
Man Cave:Vizio E500i-A1 "Smart TV" (50-in 1080p 120Hz LED/LCD, has Netflix app.), Blu-ray players (Sony BDP-S3100, old LG BD390), Roku (the original model: N1000), PC (Windows 7), Comcast Internet (25Mbps/5Mbps).
Bedroom:LG 32LV3400-UA TV (32-in 768p 60Hz LED/LCD), HD DVR (Motorola RNG200N), Xfinity Comcast cable (Digital Starter Package), DVD/VHS player.

The bad taste of Collins' magic form last year still lingers and I now dispise all prediction magic acts. Last night, the white bag clearly has two compartments so that Howard could only pick the triangle cards. Maybe that's why Mike needed 20 cards with only 5 symbols so that Howard wouldn't feel the bulk of the cards in the bag. And the assisstant was clumsy closing the compartment that even Howard looked down briefly what he was doing.

Rigging the audience hands with flourescnet paint was a nice touch but I think for the last 2 seasons by and large all magic acts were prediction acts.

How short are the judges’ memories?  One of them gushed "We've never seen that before" to David and Leeman's trick, despite its being equivalent to the staple gun trick in Rogue's audition and virtually identical to one done on AGT about two or three seasons ago.  Even besides that, D&L are too talky and take too long to complete one trick, thinking it will carry their act, just like Collins Key last year.

Mara Justine Platt is struggling to show some emotional and dynamic range and not doing so well.

Song choices are overlapping disconcertingly with "Rising Star" this summer: Emily West does "Chandelier" on AGT, and then Maneepat Molloy sings it on RS.  Jesse Kinch does "Seven Nation Army" on RS, and then Miguel Dakota sings it on AGT.  Those are still not as bad as AGT's endless reuses of "Hallelujah," "You Raise Me Up" (it would really have been chutzpah to sing that on "Rising Star," since the song's original artist is the show's host), and "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going," which both Mara Justine Platt and Octavious Johnson have repeated on us this season.

(And how short is the judges’ attention?  Platt's own mother said her daughter's name as "Merra" in a prerecorded piece.  Yet last night Klum and Brown were confidently informing Stern that her name is pronounced "Marra."  I'd like to see her called "Sorry, you're going home," but that's orthogonal.)

Four out of 6. I had a difficult time coming up with 6.

I had Audrey Moraru and Aerial Animation. As my #5 pick in my final top 5, Aerial let me down, but they were my 6th pick last night because I had to pick one.

No way did I see Mike Super or David and Leeman going through - I never gave them a consideration. Both tricks are old and simple. Both acts were given more than 90 seconds.

Out of this group I only have Emily West making it to the final. Once again, an overall very weak field of contestants this year.

My top four favorites from Tuesday's performance were posted above and this is how they did last night:

1. Emily West (singer)to finals
2. Flight Crew Jump Ropegoing home
3. Sons of Serendip (musicians/singers)to finals
4. Mike Super (without Desmond)to finals
Others also going to finals from Tuesday's performance and last night's results are:

  • Mara Justine (singer) ~ Snapple save
  • Miguel Dakota (singer)
  • David and Leeman (magicians) ~ judges' save

The Mara Justine save was a surprise to me.

Miguel Dakota is reasonable because his performances have been pretty good.

My very humble setup:
Man Cave:Vizio E500i-A1 "Smart TV" (50-in 1080p 120Hz LED/LCD, has Netflix app.), Blu-ray players (Sony BDP-S3100, old LG BD390), Roku (the original model: N1000), PC (Windows 7), Comcast Internet (25Mbps/5Mbps).
Bedroom:LG 32LV3400-UA TV (32-in 768p 60Hz LED/LCD), HD DVR (Motorola RNG200N), Xfinity Comcast cable (Digital Starter Package), DVD/VHS player.

Apologies if this has been mentioned elsewhere in the thread, I just tripped across it and wanted to ask a question:

Has anyone else noticed sound issues with the live performances versus the recaps? For me, many of the live performances - particularly the singing acts - were so poorly mixed that it didn't give a good impression of the artist's performance.

My two cents,

Mike

The only sound issue I had personally noticed was that AGT's volume is lower than most of KGW's programming and commercials. I suspect the playback from whatever they are using for the delay has the volume set a bit low.

Have you tried "stereo" vs. "4.1" to see if one seems to do better than the other when listening to the singers?

My very humble setup:
Man Cave:Vizio E500i-A1 "Smart TV" (50-in 1080p 120Hz LED/LCD, has Netflix app.), Blu-ray players (Sony BDP-S3100, old LG BD390), Roku (the original model: N1000), PC (Windows 7), Comcast Internet (25Mbps/5Mbps).

I haven't, but since the re-cap show doesn't exhibit the same issue, I presumed it may have been mixing at the source. I have been seeing other issues with DirecTV's Dolby output (with On Demand content), so I wonder if something isn't wonky with how the receiver is processing the audio. Oddly, I haven't seen the same issue with other content from NBC or the local affiliate.

4 singers and 2 magicians go to the finals. The only disappointmnet I have is Andrey Moraru didn't make it. It's not easy doing what he does and with such fluidity. But singers always have the edge in not having to re-invent themselves week after week. And that makes last year Kenichi Ibina's win that much more impressive. If Emily West doesn't goof up in the finals, she should be the front runner of this group.

I agree. But as I told my wife, he has only so many "new" moves left, so even though I voted him through this round, I didn't think he would advance any further.

Mike Super - 3:04, and David and Leeman - 4:22. Very difficult for magicians to do anything worthwhile in only 90 seconds, so on second thought and this late in the game, I'll give them a pass. Every other act completed their performance in less than 2 minutes.

Another echo of last season: an act whose name is stressed on the correct syllable only by the performers themselves while all the judges want to move it to the end of the word.  Last year it was Forte, and this season it's the Sons of Serendip.

Forte (as their name) is a trochee.
Serendip is a dactyl.

I found the results disappointing also, and I readily admit that when the Snapple Save instructions were announced I put the DVR on pause, sped downstairs to the computer, and voted for Aerial Animation with every Google account I have.  It's not that she was so great, but rather for the reasons I've already posted that I dislike David Blatter and Leeman Parker's and Mara Justine Platt's acts.  (Yes, I'm in a bad mood and throwing surnames all over the place: watch out next week when I talk about Emil and Dariel Liakhovetski and Tomás "Smoothini the Ghetto Houdini" de la Cruz.)  Platt is actually getting less unlistenable IMO, but I'd still rather watch Abigail Baird go up and down on her fabric and interact with her animated backgrounds.

My top six picks from tonight's episode:

1.Emil & Dariel (Cello Players)I'm a James Bond fan!
2.Jonah Smith (Singer)
3.Mat Franco (Magician)Mel's phone, 6,4,2
4.Jaycob Curlee (Singer)old song
5.Smoothini (Close-up Magic)Howie's ring & Nick's shoelace
6.Acroarmy (acrobatic team)

In twenty hours we'll see how wrong I am.

My favorite was Blue Journey but audience didn't seem to like this kind of high concept artsy act.

Quintavious was the best singer of last night, I didn't know the song he sang but he sold it to me.

Acroarmy brought it up a few notches to almost Cirque de Soleil level but again audience didn't seem to favor acrobats this year.

I still think Mat Franco talks too much but I couldn't figure out how he got Mel's phone inside the seat cushion. I rewound a few times and couldn't seen any sign of him switching Mel's phone last minute after she picked it up from the seat cushion. But he must have, haven't he?

Wendy Libeman is better but she needs a little more edgy jokes. Unfortunately, I don't think her act will appeal to a large enough demographic to get her through.

Jonah Smith and Smoothini should go through.

I think the winner will be between Quintavious and Emily West.

Maybe Mat hacked into Mel's cloud and had dup phones buried in several seats to cover all the possibilities.

He used her phone to take two pictures of her holding the three cards that the other judges had "randomly" drawn from a deck. He then accidentally dropped her phone into a glass of water, then placed the phone in a folded piece of cloth and used a blow dryer to "dry" the phone, which then the cloth with the phone started smoking, and the when the cloth was unfolded, the phone was gone.

He then had another judge call her phone, and there was the sound of a phone ringing. In the audience, some people heard the phone ringing, and it sounded like it was coming from a particular seat. He cut open that seat and had Mel reach in and remove the phone, which had the picture of her holding the three cards. And the three cards were number cards and those numbers corresponded to the seat where the phone was located.

The one possibility is that the phone inside the cushion cannot be Mel B's phone because that was planted hours ago. No chance Mel B will not notice her phone was missing for hours.

So sleight of hand happened at seat 642 but I'm pretty sure Mel B was holding the phone in her hand the whole way at seat 642.

The other possibility is that Franco switched Mel B's phone at the judges' table and then had a runner running it up to seat 642. The phone could be snucked in from the side or bottom but someone in the audience must have noticed it. I guess as long as the TV audience didn't see it, it wouldn't be a big deal.

The ring tone from Heidi's calling was really loud like it was coming from a loudspeaker which was interesting.

My suspicion is that at the Judges' table there probably was a swap of phones between when the picture of the cards was taken and when "the phone" was accidentally dropped in the water; it was that swapped phone that disappeared. Then later when her phone was called, an accomplice probably called the same model of phone that was hidden in seat 642. Another slight of hand to resubstitute Mel B's phone for the phone that was in Seat 642 when the magician brought back up the picture of Mel B holding the cards. No runner would have been needed, but two props (two phones or look-alikes) would have been needed.

If it weren't a phone ringing, but rather a recording that was looped to play over and over on the speakers, it could ring for however long it needed to play. Or likewise an app running on the phone in the seat cushion that simulated Mel B's ring tone.

Could be, but wouldn't Mel be suspicious? She probably knows that her phone only rings x number of times before it goes to voice mail. Would be big red flag that it's not her phone ringing. Plus, who still uses that ring tone, pretty awful.
