I can barely remember what day it is never mind the date, so even if I did see the premiere date somewhere it didn't register either. Plus with FX I expect all their big shows to be during the week so I automatically assume it would be on then anyway.

Watched my DVRed opener this morning. Grim, IMO. Really bizarre mix of vampire/zombie tales, overlaid with CDC superbug mumbo jumbo, and even some apparent Nazi fiction. Then there's Alien-like (the movies) bloodthirsty worms. Some gibberish at the end about love spreading the Strain. Oh my. -- John

I guess the vampire subject is a letdown for me. Would have been cooler if the CDC was fighting a whole new strain of germ warfar.

I read the first book and didn't care much for it. The pilot episode is pretty faithful in plotting to what I remember of the book, but benefits greatly in live action from the creepy atmosphere and Guillermo del Toro's directing. We'll see how well it holds up in the subsequent episodes when del Toro hands the reins over to other directors.

I also enjoyed the first episode, but I was a bit confused by two points (if you haven't seen the premiere episode and plan to, don't open these spoilers until you do):
1.
Spoiler!

and

2.
Spoiler!

So far, the show has me hooked.

Spoiler!

Since there are still several more opportunities to see the premiere episode throughout the week, I think it makes sense to liberally use the [ spoiler ] ... [ / spoiler ] tags.

Can't go too wrong with these ingredients along with rich dying white guy who wants to live forever and is apparently willing to destroy the human race to achieve it.
Also had the intrigue of the henchman who was already infected and seemed to be doing okay to some extent.

Jerry. Just remember. Its not a lie . . . if you believe it. GC

I'm just speculating here, I haven't read the script/book.

Assuming this is some kind of vampire story, my guess is
Spoiler!

As to that blurb about love,
Spoiler!

I expect the "Nazi" with the eyes would be the vamps servant. I'm more curious as to the rich guys motivation.

I liked the opener and will continue to watch. I have just a few nitpicks:

The acting by the two flight attendants was poor. The jump to "virus outbreak" was unexplained, unless I missed it.
Spoiler!

I also thought the "eyes" were revealed too early, but that's just a preference on my part.

Much better than Dominion, not quite as good as TWD.

I also think the jump to "virus outbreak" was unexpected and the only explanation was that if an international plane lands and people are dead, the CDC has first crack at it. (That's how, according to the show, the CDC had initial jurisdiction instead of Homeland Security.)

But even so,
Spoiler!

Man Cave:Vizio E500i-A1 "Smart TV" (50-in 1080p 120Hz LED/LCD, has Netflix app.), Sony BDP-S3100 Blu-ray player, Roku N1000 (original model), PC (Windows 7), Comcast Internet (120Mbps/12Mbps).

Hmm, better than Dominion, maybe, ...much better, too early to make that claim I think. Dominion has been pretty good. I did like the premiere of the Strain, even though so far not a fan of the main character, kind of reminds me of a cheezy Peter Sarsgaard. (with a wig) I dunno, just annoys me so far. He was great in House of Cards though.

Rudy's character could be interesting.

But this has Del Terro all over it, so I'll keep watching!

There are a lot of alternate air times, such as midnight tonight, according to their schedule. If viewing the FX schedule, click on the show in the schedule grid to see the episode title and synopsis. The premiere episode is named "Night Zero".

I make good use of alternate air times for PBS (KOPB) and for some other cable stations when I find too many shows to record at the same time with just two tuners in the DVR, a problem that is compounded when I insist on recording an extra 5 or 10 minutes if the next program to record doesn't follow immediately on the same channel. The only problem is that many of the mandatory Emergency Alert System tests occur during the midnight-6am shift, which kills at least half a minute of whatever I am trying to record at that time.

My very humble setup:
Man Cave:Vizio E500i-A1 "Smart TV" (50-in 1080p 120Hz LED/LCD, has Netflix app.), Sony BDP-S3100 Blu-ray player, Roku N1000 (original model), PC (Windows 7), Comcast Internet (120Mbps/12Mbps).

I guess I just don't get Guillermo Del Toro. I thought this show had some good moments (gore), but the characters and writing were all awful. Once he made the first Hellboy movie, he incorporated cheese/bad dialogue/bad actors into all of his material.

It's funny because there are all these articles out there about how they took a year to film the pilot. Really? It was on par with a Saturday night "syfy" made for tv movie.

Corey Stoll's hairpiece is scarier than any of this show's prospects. It seems to have a life of its own, and needs to be shot off before it feeds on others.

Didn't recognized him, when I googled him I saw that he's the guy from House of Cards! wow what an awful wig does.. here comes the male Megan Boone..

Maybe it was Del Toro, but when the rock start took his wig off I was rooting for Corey to do the same! LOL

You can stop straining my eyes with

- Unnecessary spoiler tags

(I have enough with the bad forum format TYVM)

I usually don't get into shows like this one. But I have to say I really like it. That being said, I'm like the earlier poster that asked what the following episodes will be like. The first one was like watching a movie. I'm afraid the others will be like watching a strung-out TV show we see these days. We'll see.

Can we call them the "freezing wombies"

They love the cold, from the "bosses" having a refrigerated home, the monster expelling cold vapors like dry ice and the girl and the end that was cold..

I liked the first episode pretty well, though I hope it goes more vampire than zombie in the coming episodes. I'm about done with the whole zombie thing (i.e. The Walking Dead).

If you're curious about things, Wikipedia has info posted from the books which will make things clearer. Only look if you don't think it spoil upcoming episodes. It actually make me curious to see more.

The Leftovers is MUCH better than this show. Better writing, better acting, better concept. Don't discard it because one person likes schlock over a slow-burn mystery.
