I will follow for a few episodes to see where it goes, but I'm a little disappointed so far.
I agree with everything you said about this show. I've watched 3 episodes, but the gay son is putting me off big time! Seriously, the arab kid goes down on Barry's son? Why do they have to throw that crap in there? Instead of saying sexual situations as a whole, why not add homosexual situations. At least then I know I'm not going to watch it. I'm not a bigot,I have a right to feel what I feel! The wife is super annoying, can't believe he would marry that. I'll give it an episode or 2 before it comes off the rotation. There are other good shows that aren't pushing homosexuality in my face..

Today in most of the Islamic world homosexuality is not socially or legally accepted and in some areas is punishable by the death penalty .. if taken in that context, the inclusion of the scene takes on a different meaning ..

You can take about any show these days and slam it for some perceived possible gratuitous gay "I don't want to watch that on my TV" material ..

Walton Goggins transgender on Sons of Anarchy, Game of Thrones in multiple episodes, Shameless in multiple episodes, etc, etc ..

I will venture to guess, however, that woman on woman action would not pose a problem for you .. thus your disclaimer is weak ..

Sorry, but my argument is far from weak. I watch none of those shows. Woman on woman is not ok either! For thousands of years it wasn't ok, now all of the sudden we are civilized and embrace it. Why? There are just certain groups out there that feel the need to change everything. whats next? There are no morals anymore.

Well, at least it's good to know you're "not a bigot". That's an interesting claim since you also say you consider homosexuality amoral. My guess is there are a lot of gay folks who would disagree with you vociferously if you said that to their face.

As to why, I suspect it has to do with the fact that, as scientific knowledge progresses, we're not as ignorant of a great many things as we used to be "thousands of years ago". You called it yourself: we're more civilized now. Most people consider that a good thing.

My point is, modern TV is filled with material that ranges from innuendo to outright R rated .. that's why there are viewer advisories .. to claim no bigotry as it relates to that of any scene from any show after stating .. your words :

"Why do they have to throw that crap in there? .. I'm not a bigot, I have a right to feel what I feel! .. There are other good shows that aren't pushing homosexuality in my face.. "

are prejudiced in and of themselves .. if you read them and don't feel this is hate speech, then, well .......

There are plenty of morals .. the problem is those that wish to force what they consider their morality on others ..

Factoid .. thousands of years ago was no different and in fact, publicly acceptable in many cultures ..

When 50% of the population is homosexual, get back to me. Pushing an agenda doesn't make you more civilized. These shows can hint at homosexuality, just don't show it. Its just Hollywood pushing the enevelope. Next week, lets throw this out there and see if it sticks.

You assume it is some sort of agenda by Hollywood, to do what .. ?? Appeal to the gay populace .. ?? Shock value .. ?? Or, maybe, just by a long shot, it's a reflection of the way things are in the Real World .. ??

Let's bring Andy of Mayberry back and things others might find distasteful will then magically disappear ..

It's not morality that's lacking, it's tolerance and acceptance ..

Congratulations! You formed your own opinion.. Once again,I just want to be informed that there will be homosexual content on a show via the tv ratings. That way other people like myself can make a decision to whether we want to watch the show or not. Its really not hard to understand. Good luck with the thread,I'm out.

I really could do without the gay stuff also. 2 women, yup fine by me, but only if they are hot. I know its not politically correct, but hey, that's the way I feel.

I don't think political correctness really has anything to do with it. Lesbian fantasy is a staple of male-porn and locker-room jocularity, and is thus "politically correct" in most circles, including those in which male homosexuality is viewed with disdain. Hypocrisy is a more accurate term if you think about it.

Please do not quote my post and attempt to use my words to support your homophobia.

My problem with the son character is not that he's gay. My problem is that he's behaving stupidly.

I cannot get into this show for the most part. I've been enthralled by almost all of FX's dramatic series over the years, but not this one. I will definitely give it a few more episodes as a late turnaround is not unheard of.

Sounds like the solution. There is a warning for sexual content. Heterosexual content makes some people uncomfortable. There was a very funny "Zits"comic recently of Dad being very uncomfortable watching HBO with his son. I've has similar discomfort with my daughter. Regardless of what one thinks about homosexual behavior, fair advance warning is a good thing.

I think I'm done with it. It's just not taking off. And yes, a warning about gay sexual activity would be helpful.

This conversation has take a fascinating turn...

Back to the show itself...I feel like a LOT of the sub-plots are being rushed (some might say forced). At least up until now it almost feels like the first few episodes were part of one big pilot, trying to cover as much ground as possible to get the green light. I'm not saying I like or dislike any of them, as they are all for the most part intriguing, it just feels like too many things all at once are being thrown at the wall to see what sticks. Granted, all first season shows have some of that issue, as they are trying to prove their validation for renewal (the ultimate TV goal). But through my rose-colored glasses I don't feel shows like "Justified", "SOA", or even "The Shield" were this rushed with so many different plots/sub-plots. Using "The Shield" as an example, the way they told the story of Julien being drug through the ringer by Vic, after Vic caught him in the act with another man, was fantastic. It really made you feel for Julien because he had already been a well-established "good guy" character and the writers used that to their advantage to tell a better story (in my opinion that is).

It would be nice if, moving forward, they could hone in on one or two primary plot lines and then re-visit the others they've hit on thus far later. Personally, I want to see more between the two brothers and how they maneuver around and through each other toward their own agendas/goals. The most intriguing secondary-plot at this point, to me at least, is the potential story-lines for Martial Law being enacted. THAT is very timely considering all that is going on and has gone on in our real-world, and would tie in nicely (IMHO) to the universe this show is constructing.

The rest of the plot-lines, for better or worse, would have been great to add in once these primaries were more established. Think of the impact the revelation that Jamal's wife was really the young-love of his brother Barry, before he bailed for the U.S., would have had further into the season when the audience had more vested in those two brothers. As well as the too soon (IMO) revelation that the flashbacks in the pilot of the brother executing the man on the street were really Barry. Hold that back for a little bit longer and I think we all would have bought into the "monster in the closet" story they are trying to tell.

I wonder if the network should provide a warning that the series depicts characters of Middle Eastern ethnicity so that the racists in the audience won't have to feel uncomfortable?

Yes, the thread has gone off on a tangent based on what I consider to be an inflammatory post ..

The standard advisory is present .. to advocate that it should somehow be amended to include info specific to what may or may not be shown is ludicrous .. what's next .. ?? Warning : There are Clowns in This Show ... I mean, some folks don't like clowns and might want to know ..

I had totally forgotten about that post. Seen this view more than once lately in different show treads. I guess people should cancel cable and only stick to rentals when they know it's "safe" to watch the shows.

I also think that will have a major plot development. She obviously felt spurned that he didn't stay with her, and that resentment shows. It also shows that there is still major attraction going on that both will eventually succumb to.

So it's not going to be as simple as Bassam convincing his brother to be more democratic.

They have to carry the burden of their father's brutality.

And of all people, Molly somehow dispenses wisdom to Bassam about starting slow.
