The 1939 national high school FOOTBALL championship won by Garfield NJ?

What you got back home, little sister, to play your fuzzy warbles on? I bet you got little save pitiful, portable picnic players. Come with uncle and hear all proper! Hear angel trumpets and devil trombones. You are invited.

tough day for me

i am the only soccer fan on the planet who is not impressed with Messi so I don't want Argentina to win (although I would if he were not playing) and I don't want an all Europe final.

Messi has really been a non-factor in this game, speaking as of the end of regulation time now. Argentina has been so lackluster this year, and only coasting on Messi's bursts of brilliance, but if he's been silenced, what are they going to win with? 30 extra minutes to go.

Why didn't Ned coach put in Tim Krul for the shootout? He did pretty well last time. Why not go with what works?

Anyway, hard to see how Arg can beat Ger. Messi can be smothered, as Ned showed.

Can we get an Arg+Bra+Col team vs Ger+Ita+Spa team for the final?

Netherlands had curiously used up all their substitutions.

As was pointed out he had used his subs. Once he did the half time switch and then replaced De Jong (who did well to last that long after coming back from injury) - the option was to keep Van Persie (who was also under the weather) in extra time - he decided to give Huntelaar a go. With hindsight maybe Van Persie (why on earth the defender Vlarr) to take the first penalty and Krul as goalie would have been a better option.

While I sort of understand what you saying Arg+Bra+Col team vs Ger+Fra+Ned might be more interesting given that Ita and Spa didn't make it through the group stages.

Anyway it would seem to be Germany's final to lose (and yes Messi is a talent) - but overall Germany is the better team....

Do the teams have to declare the shooting lineup at the start or can the coach pick who's next depending on the score?

Anyway, seems to me you should put your best or second best shooter first to set the tone. Missed PKs, like missed FTs, can be contagious. Also, the opponent's goalie gets more confidence.

If only they could afford the legendary Darrel "boogity, boogity, boogity" Waltrip, it would have been more palatable to some here on the stateside!!

Never a soccer fan, but decided to watch & really enjoyed the game. Can't say I'll keep up with the sport, but I gained a new respect for it, the athletes, and the BS of a different type that surrounds it

Amen to that! Mueller was better overall. But, maybe they did it this way so there wouldn't be rioting in the streets.

Congrats to the World Cup Champions FIFA 2014; Germany! ...That goal was superb!

And to Argentina for a great match, and to all the other world's teams for a great tournament. ...The world was watching, including Mick.

Nice. I look at my recording of the Final and find not a bit of the game. The listing had it on espn2. Was it on abc?

Good to see the best team in the tournament claim the prize without the need for penalties.

The Germans earned and deserved the CUP.

That's a shame... The ESPN2 listing is a late evening replay.

Germany were the most consistent team throughout the tournament, and Argentina were never as good as in this game. It's justified that it all came to a late goal in extra time. Messi was a non-factor, and that's a darn shame.

While I agree Messi as the player of the tournament seems a stretch - but in whose streets are they trying to stop the rioting? I am not sure the local Brazilian support was cheering for their biggest rivals - Argentina...

I think there are a few on the German team that would have been better candidates for player of the tournament.

Well yes - would be interesting to know what malfeascence [sic] that was being suggested. Certainly wasn't clear from OggideM's post.

Loved them. Brit announcers are ridiculously superior to American mushmouths.

Nice to see the announcers call out the production when they spent a lot of time showing the statue in the sunset rather then the live game.

I hate when the producers think they can show the game like a "normal" American sport which has lots of inaction. I was almost screaming when near the end of the game they showed endless shots of the fans reaction to the goal. Hello! the game is going on.

When the ball is in play:
We don't need to see the coaches
We don't need to see the fans
We don't need to see the fans doing the wave
We don't need to see 6 replays, including slow motion, of a play which didn't result in anything
We don't need to see a player or coaches head talking in slow motion
We don't need to see the player who was just involved in the failed play walking down the field
We don't need to see the surrounding city
We still don't need to see the fans
We don't need to see the guy holding up the stoppage time sign

That stuff is marginally okay to waste time in baseball and football telecasts where there is much more non action then action.

and Messi, the non factor, was given the tournament best player award.

Meantime it was Argentina's defense that was the star of this team.

once you make a name for yourself, it's hard for people to see you objectively

Messi cashes in on this big time, yet again.

Yeah, they are so good I watched the matches with the volume off. I could not stand to listen to them. They lost lots of American viewers I can tell you that.

ESPN make a big mistake chooseing the announcers they choose.

all in all, this was an absolutely brilliant world cup

espn presented this impeccably and the games were wonderful

the build up to the games, the daily pre game and post game, the nightly replays all were totally inspired

improvement could be had to two areas

1 fifa needs to embrace technology, off side calls and fouls are still pot luck affairs.

2 us soccer needs to insist that espn use announcers who are american. they keep the game foreign by their announcer choices.

Messi - 0 goals in knockout stage. All his goals were scored in the group stage. No goals when it needed to count.

Looked like he didn't even appreciate the award he won.

Sore loser if you ask me.

Congrats to Germany. They have good starters and bench players that can start on any other team. Schweinsteiger is a true iron man of the sport, good luck to him with his future plans.

Well played tournament.
