Brazil 2014 World Cup Soccer on ESPN

Technically things look and sound good. It will take a day or 2 to tweak everything to be consistent i'm sure. Watching on Direct TV, there is intermittent loss (blips) on the audio feed but presumably that is not the fault of the provider as the pictures are solid.

Last edited by motodop; 06-13-2014 at 10:04 AM. Reason: Noticed all audio is intermittent

It's also available OTA on Univision as well as simulcast on UDN on cable.

Of the 3, UDN has the best overall PQ but that simply may be a result of it being 1080i and watching on a 1080p screen.
ESPN comes in a close 2nd, with the wide shots being softer than UDN's feed.
Univison (KTVW Phoenix) coming in third with a very pixlated picture in fast motion.

FWIW, I also checked the Univision online feed and it's very pixelated as well.

on dish...UDN had the best pic closely by Univision (from dish local). Espn was third. on streaming espn3 was the best

Unimas seems to have better quality, although both our Univision channels have 2 subs each, one sub being Unimas in SD... what they need 2 Unimas channels on the same city? IDK...

More advertisements on ESPN than half time analysis in the Studio. Its hardly worth coming back to the Studio. That half time break is exactly the time we want a quick analysis from the studio guests. More important to hear their comments at half time than at the end of the game.

I want to contact my local Univision station (KINT 26.1) to see if they can increase the bandwidth, my eyes hurt during fast pan scenes, they are just a blur because of the low bandwidth they are using.
Was watching side by side Vs KVIA ABC 7 and the quality shows.. Both sations have 3 sub channels, I don't know what's wrong with KINT..

The Brazil World Cup ball effects on the field are at a really low level and are not being mixed 'aggressively' I do not believe that this is due to the loudness of the crowd as you can always get better ball effects at the expense of some closer crowd. Host Broadcast Services undoubtedly want to keep consistency and they have done that as I believe the pitch/field effects are consistently low across all games. It might sound better in surround without the Ls/Rs folded down into the Front L & R but Stereo is the market worldwide not 5.1. The field is beautifully miked buts the overall world/multilateral sound feed is disappointing. From my understanding all the individual mix 'stems' are sent from the venues to a number (2) of IBC master mix rooms where the master world feed is mixed in a controlled environment and that way the mix's are consistent from venue to venue and not different coming from each OB/remote truck at each venue. I wonder what specs. have been given to the IBC mixers as to where to place the ball effects on the db/LKFS scale.

Watched some Iran/Nigeria a few minutes ago, can't they get rid of the glare from the sun? or they forgot the filter? IDK but in 2014 that shouldn't happen.

This is from the main camera in midfield, the one that does most of the shots..

Yes, I have been watching the glare from that game too. It's the first match in the Arena Baixada, so hopefully they get it fixed for the next match there. Apparently there was a question if this stadium would even be ready if it didn't meet the deadlines. It was close to being given a late game substitution!

Position of the stadium + time of day + position of the camera = glare on this match, I guess the TV crew didn't test this and I bet the central camera is fixed so then cannot lower it a bit more, but again there's sun filters for that. IDK if putting a visor in the camera would help

Pretty much gone in the 2nd half. Sun went down, clouds showed up. And we might have the first draw of the tournament!

Hmm.. I found the Brazil vs Mexico match to be incredibly boring - lots of uncoordinated, lots of silly flops and overly aggressive playmaking. Yesterday's US vs Ghana was infinitely more enjoyable for me. YMMV, of course.

Now I fell half asleep watching Russia Vs. S. Korea, I woke up laughing at the Russian keeper (he needs lessons from Mexico's Ochoa).

Why must every announcer on USA TV covering the Cup have a foreign accent?

How will soccer ever be accepted in the USA as long as it is foreign dominated?

good grief

What you got back home, little sister, to play your fuzzy warbles on? I bet you got little save pitiful, portable picnic players. Come with uncle and hear all proper! Hear angel trumpets and devil trombones. You are invited.

ESPN use to have Americans announcers for soccer telecast but soccerniks in this country thought they all sucked.
When Setanta went belly up in the UK it allowed ESPN to become a player there and acquire the non-US announcers that they now use.

The soccerniks already going bats for FOX using Americans...Gus Johnson especially...as announcers.

Narrow escape by the host!
For a soccer powerhouse, Brazil continues to be unimpressive.
