We don't have an idea of how far in the future the program is based. with the cars, computers and etc...... I'm guessing 60 or 70 years, it's not so far fetched. Look how far computers have come in the last 40 is a good example.

No doubt artificial intelligence will progress by leaps and bounds over the next 70 years. But the mechanical robotics that will be necessary to mimic true human movement is a lot further down the line I suspect.

As are the batteries that can power them.

This series is now available for free streaming via Amazon Prime. Looks like they will offer a new episode every Sunday. That seems like an unusual move for a TV series.

OK, it was slightly better than its pilot. CBS should have made this a two/2 hours series premiere instead. I still like the flasbacks. I will keep watching it for now.

This is definitely one of those shows where I'm on the cusp of dropping it, but keep finding something to keep me watching. For one, I'm glad they didn't drag out the whole hiding the pregnancy thing. I'm also intrigued at how the robot son will play out, especially with an alien sibling coming along. It was also nice to see they have a plan for the robot kid's "growth".

Some minor nits, though:

- I'm pretty sure that in even as little as 20 years, there will be almost nowhere near any populated area that doesn't have cell service as micro-cells become more commonplace, negating the need more massive tower eyesores we initially used. It would have been better if the other astronaut was simply jamming the signal to keep hidden.

- So, she's looking up footage using essentially a backdoor by viewing footage that hasn't been blocked. Then, the session gets terminated. That would mean the files were being monitored. If that's the case, it would mean they knew about the additional camera footage and should have it all locked down, only allowing access to those that are authorized to view it. Even if that weren't the case, she should have been denied right from the get-go as a result of trying to access the restricted stuff. She never should have been able to see what she saw.

AT&T is probably the only carrier around in the near future so it's not surprising there are still holes in coverage.

On many other series, they'd have a techie-savvy buddy of hers break into the system with a few well-placed keystrokes and show her the footage. Since they don't have that character on this show, they need a macguffin. Thus, the temporarily unsecured plant-cam which showed her just enough but not too much.

They do have a doctor buddy/confident who can do ultrasounds in a vet clinic, however. Who knows what her access and medical skills can do to advance the plot next week?

That's why they should have had a second person on the space station who would be asleep and have missed to mysterious night visitor. That person could be the computer/lab assistant who gets her the footage she saw, but is really working with the conspiracy, which is why she could that video, but not get any of the rest. It would have to be a female so, you know, it wouldn't give doubt about the source of her pregnancy.

Well, she'll probably continue to monitor the pregnancy by checking up on the baby and making sure Halle's nose is cold and wet.

I figured if the assistant were female, it would totally remove the possibility, especially considering the number of gay men who have heterosexual relationships prior to coming out. If the second person were male, it would always plant a seed of doubt (no pun intended) about who "daddy" is with not only the characters, but the audience. After all, which is more plausible: an invisible alien impregnating her or her assistant potentially lying about being gay and slipping her a mickey?

Granted, that might add more drama (especially when the husband finds out), but it seems like they want to make it clear that a mysterious alien entity was getting his Martian rocks off.

Well they could always petition to go on Maury to see "who's the daddy!"...
I could see the pre-show ad now.. "is your spouse or someone you know cheating on you with extraterrestrials or non-corporal entities? ... if so, send em to Maury and learn the truth!"
I can just hear HB "....I swear.... I just can't take it no more Maury!!!!"

I was about 10-15 minutes into the episode and thought why do I watch this, with my finger ready to delete the recording. Then 5-10 minutes later things started to pick up enough that I'll stay around to see where this goes.

CBS’s ‘Extant’ holds up in week two
Posts a 1.5 in 18-49s, holding 94 percent of last week's rating
By Toni Fitzgerald, Media Life Magazine - Jul. 17, 2013

Most of the adults 18-49 who watched last week’s debut of “Extant” returned last night.

The new 9 p.m. CBS drama averaged a 1.5 18-49 rating in its second outing, according to Nielsen, retaining 94 percent of last week’s rating.

It easily won its timeslot against minimal competition, and it was the night’s No. 1 show among total viewers, averaging 7.87 million.

Of course, “Extant” also got a healthy lead-in from “Big Brother,” the night’s top show, which averaged a 2.0 18-49 rating at 8 p.m., growing 5 percent over last week.

She probably is.

We've got so many subplots that they'll surely keep us jumping around trying to figure out how they're all connected.

So the Japanese investor has a hundred days to live and financed additional research in robotics. Looks like he's interested in a new body.....whether it'll be robotic or part alien remains to be seen.
