It was the scene where he opened this wooden box, took out a small white device and stuck his finder in it. The voice said that he had 1XX days to live. Didn't say anything about which disease. ....... or maybe its not a disease. If the writers wanted to, I suppose we could make him an alien with an expiration date on the humanoid body.

He opened a padded wooden box and put his hand on a shiny, white, scupted pad which said he had so-many days to live. I don't think they've actually told us what he has. There was a scene in the first episode where they showed a coffin-shaped box up in the air with lots of cables/tubes going to it. I seem to recall one of the characters mentioning that a meeting would have to wait until he was out of it.

That's what I was thinking, in fact, the amount of time they lingered on the shot of him with the picture of the samurai on the wall behind him made me think they might be one in the same person. At the very least I think there is something very different about the guy that is directly connected to what's going on in Molly's belly.

He's (Hiroyuki Sanada) starring in Syfy's 'Helix' as well, and survived the conflagration on the season finale of that show. Busy guy. Don't know if he'll be available for both shows next season.

I was aware that many (most?) diabetics monitor their blood sugar regularly, but I was unaware that they monitor how many days are left in their lives.

Umm. Riiiight.

For some reason I was focusing on the invasive aspect of the testing, not the "You're gonna die!" part.

Edited to add: Of course, isn't the only show where knowing that a character had a limited lifetime was used to add some drama or pathos. One of the recent Dr. Who Christmas Specials did it, too.

Take one part Solaris, one part A.I., and most likely one part Embryo (the 1976 Rock Hudson vehicle), add a dash of The Astronaut's Wife (husband in this case), then strain through a paranoid invasion from space conspiracy, and you get Extant.

I'm still watching, even though there is no slightest hint of an original plot.

They are trying to develop monitors that don't even require a blood sample but a method of analyzing the blood content right over a vein. This could also be extended for doing a blood panels. It would come close to what Dr. McCoy had.

But remember the context of this show, Extant, was to see how many days the individual has left to live.

Slow? Hm... I'm going to have to watch the episode again; I watched it in bed and I ended up falling asleep before watching all of it.

But I did learn:
Spoiler!

I'm going to have to watch the episode at a time I am more alert to see what was exciting at the end of the episode.

Not a spoiler. Once the show airs in the East/Central, spoiler tags are not necessary.

"What do you say Beckett. Wanna have a baby?" - Castle to Det. Beckett
"How Long have I been gone?" Alexis after arriving home and seeing Castle and Beckett w/ the baby - Castle - 11/25/13

Correct. But the forum rules are that once a show airs in the East/Central, discussion is wide open as to what happened on the show. Viewers in other time zones know that they have to wait until after it airs in their time zone, otherwise they might see something.

They didn't. He's speculating. All we know is that somebody said he needed to be brought out of his chamber early in the series, but the chamber itself could have been some sort of StarGate-esque regeneration device that extends his otherwise limited lifespan, or it could have been a freezing device to keep him preserved until their devious plan provided a way to save him. We don't know, and there isn't much reason to guess, since we haven't been given much information yet.

I enjoyed this episode quite a bit. I hate it when shows of this nature keep half of the cast out of the loop for extended periods, so now that the husband is sort of up to speed and Holly knows that she can't trust the space agency, the plot is progressive pretty well. It looks like the husband is even being supportive instead of accusing her of space sex (which is something I would kind of expect from the family dynamics in other shows), so that's nice, too.

That's how I interpreted it as well. His aide (also seen as "Travis" in 'Continuum' - busy guy) told him his liver could fail "any time now" and they were ready to "harvest" another one from some poor plebeian, so we can reasonably infer his physical deterioration is being kept at bay by this chamber somehow. Super-rich guy wants to live forever and is willing to do "what it takes" to accomplish that - it's a fairly common sci-fi trope.

Me too. The show seems to be picking up steam now. Still hate the robotic kid subplot, but assume it will all tie in eventually. And.... Halle Berry. Yum.
