Z Nation SyFy HD September 12th, 2014

Z Nation
Premieres: Friday, Sep. 12 at 10/9c

The tag lines may seem somewhat familiar to some of you ..

Z Nation starts three years after the zombie virus has gutted the country, a team of everyday heroes must transport the only known survivor of the plague from New York to California, where the last functioning viral lab waits for his blood. Although the antibodies he carries are the world’s last, best hope for a vaccine, he hides a dark secret that threatens them all. With humankind’s survival at stake, the ragtag band embarks on a journey of survival across three thousand miles of rusted-out post-apocalyptic America.

Z Nation comes from The Asylum, the production house behind Sharknado and Sharknado 2.

Can AMC ('The Walking Dead') sue them for plagiarism? Or maybe some enterprising attorney could make it a class-action suit and include 'The Last Ship'.

I'm hoping for some sort of collaborative crossover event ..

"Walking Dead Z Nation World War Z Navy Cruise" with 10 buffets a day and open Bar ..

and if they could work "Falling Skies" and "Under the Dome" into that, it would just be an added bonus ..

Only if the network wants to open itself up for George Romero to sue it in turn.

With all due respect to Romero, he did not invent the genre ..

With Night of the Living Dead, George Romero did indeed invent and establish the rules for the modern zombie genre, with undead lumbering corpses that hunger for human flesh and can only be killed by shooting them in the head. Zombie stories prior to that were very different.

Well, I'll give Romero some credit for the "I only exist to eat the flesh of the living" .. however, Romero himself has stated he lifted from EC Comics .. even prior to that, we had :

Aren't we about "zombie out?" The genre is cheap to do because you can hire non actors to be zombies and they'll always deliver even if they "try" to act. Zombie movies go back to the 1930s. I guess originality has left the US for other countries. Very little US TV appeals to me these days. The good stuff comes from across the pond.

The fact that it is on SyFy makes me think it'll probably bite (see what I did there?), but I'll give it a taste test.

Which is the exact sentiment people on the other side of the pond have.

Take a look at the prime time schedule in the UK. An endless buffet of identical cop shows, period remakes, soaps, cheap reality shows, tabloid magazine "documentaries" about the superfat and bad boob jobs ...

Why do you think the UK is the biggest recipient of illegal internet television from the US? Apart from a couple of shows like Luther, Doctor Who and Top Gear most of my friends in the UK are watching Game of Thrones, Justified, The Walking Dead, Sons of Anarchy, Fargo, Boardwalk Empire ...

The US gets to pick and choose what imports it sees on television. In the UK they do the same. Both sides only see the cream and have little idea of the junk underneath that fills in the rest of the airwaves.

Some of the good European stuff winds up on Netflix. I can't imagine HBO outdoing the original "Utopia". A friend commenting about "Happy Valley", a BBC offering available on Netflix, said "they have regular looking people in the series." IOW, in the US the lead would need to be played by a beauty queen not an heavier older woman cop.

As for Syfy the Canadian remake of "Being Human" was okay but the UK original much better.

Except for Fargo on FX. It depends on the integrity of the creators.

But the reason they all look like "regular people" on UK shows like Happy Valley is because they have a small talent pool mostly pulled from grimy soap operas. Glamor doesn't sit well on those shows (especially in the locations they are set in) and inevitably the more attractive stars will probably move to US shows to shoot in sunnier and bigger cities.

The same is true for most remakes. The UK remakes of US shows were never that good either.

No problem getting a toe in Z Nation. In fact, it's practically raining toes. Walter will easily have one by 3pm.

Anybody watch tonight? It wasn't as corny as I was expecting. I was expecting Sharknado with zombies, and it seemed almost semi-serious. anybody?

I watched the first half hour and decided it wasn't my cup of tea.

I'm a bit surprised that people had high expectations just because Asylum was the production house. Yes, Asylum produced Sharknado and Sharknado 2, but they also produced many lemons, including many of Syfy's monster-of-the-week movies.

Anyway, I tend to not be interested in survivors vs. hoards of zombies so I normally end up not watching zombie shows, other than The Strain. It looks like Z Nation joins the zombie shows I am not watching.

My very humble setup:
Man Cave:Vizio E500i-A1 "Smart TV" (50-in 1080p 120Hz LED/LCD, has Netflix app.), Sony BDP-S3100 Blu-ray player, Roku N1000 (original model), PC (Windows 7), Comcast Internet (120Mbps/12Mbps).
Bedroom:LG 32LV3400-UA TV (32-in 768p 60Hz LED/LCD), HD DVR (Motorola RNG200N), Xfinity Comcast cable (Digital Preferred Plus), DVD/VHS player.

I didn't tell him to go in there and get eaten by a baby. Classic.

Different rules at play here. Apparently the most recently turned are super fast. Also, it seems some will stalk and hunt you, as in the case of the baby Z. Might take a bite bit to get use to. I'm more of a Romero zombie traditionalist. Slow, unrelenting and dead set on taking a bite out of you.

Asylum's the production house? Yeah, no chance of another Walking Dead here...

They've "locked" the first episode on their site for streaming rather than doing as before and putting up as many as 3 before locking them. The samples might help folks buy episodes from Amazon, VUDU, etc unless the show is really bad. Then just wait a month.

Interesting, I checked VUDU and Amazon and both offer episode 1 free. I'll check out episode 1 on Amazon tonight. Kinda makes sense if they want to promote "buy". The season itself is only $20 for HD.

I don't quite understand what you mean by the above. Could you break that down a little bit, don't understand the locking down part. Is it only available on the syfy site? Give me an example, it's just not clicking to me as to what that means exactly.

What locking means is that you can view the episode if you have a subscription to a carrier. To watch you need to provide your carrier and subscription information. This is also done on Hulu as well as other sites. In some cases like some Syfy episodes you can view the "next day" if you have Syfy on your carrier and provide that information and then 30 days after anyone can view as they become "unlocked."

OK, got it for the most part, I hate it when you want to watch something online and your provider isn't in the list, like FXNow isn't available for Directv, and WatchESPN isn't available, and I'm sure there are plenty of examples of other providers not in the list of other online locked sites.

You said Hulu does this sometimes, do they really? I didn't realize there were shows that were locked on Hulu(+) that weren't available unless you subbed to that particular station and possibly provider(I assume).
