Fear the Walking Dead on AMC HD

Figured we needed a new thread for the new show instead of cluttering the other thread with talk of two shows.

'Walking Dead' Companion Series Title Revealed
By Lesley Goldberg, The Hollywood Reporter's 'Live Feed' Blog - Mar. 26, 2015

It's official: AMC's The Walking Dead companion series has a title.

Executive producer Robert Kirkman announced Friday that the companion series, which starts as a prequel to the original, will be titled Fear The Walking Dead.

"IT'S OFFICIAL! The walking dead companion show on AMC is called FEAR THE WALKING DEAD! Expect more news very soon! #FearTheWalkingDead," he posted on Twitter.

The news comes as the companion went through development season — and was picked up to series and preemptively renewed for a second season — under code names including Cobalt and Fear The Walking Dead.
On March 9, AMC announced the series pickup and renewal for the then-untitled series.

Kirkman, who created The Walking Dead comic series, co-wrote the pilot with Dave Erickson (Sons of Anarchy). Kirkman and Erickson will exec produce alongside Walking Dead's Gale Anne Hurd and Dave Alpert. Erickson will serve as showrunner, and Adam Davidson will direct the pilot. Walking Dead VFX guru Greg Nicotero will also exec produce the series.

While AMC has been tight-lipped on the series' premise, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that the drama is a prequel that takes place in Los Angeles at the onset of the zombie outbreak. AMC confirmed that the companion series is set in Los Angeles but revealed nothing more beyond that it will focus on new characters and storylines.

Cliff Curtis (Gang Related) stars as Sean Cabrera, a teacher who shares a son with his ex-wife. Sons of Anarchy's Kim Dickens is set to co-star as Nancy, a guidance counselor who works at the school with Sean and is seeing him romantically. Frank Dillane (Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince) co-stars as Nancy's son Nick, who has battled a drug problem. And Alycia Debnam Carey (Into the Woods) is will play Nancy's ambitious daughter, Ashley, who is the polar opposite of Nick and dreams of leaving L.A. for Berkeley when the apocalypse strikes.

Fear The Walking Dead will premiere in the "late summer" with season two set for 2016. An official premiere date has not yet been announced. The season five finale of the flagship series airs Sunday at 9 p.m.

Lame name, but will watch at least the pilot to see how good (or bad) it ends up being.
Will this be just a money grab or another excellent show?

I agree. Should have came up with a more original title.

Curtis and Dickens are good actors, but will they be stuck in a soapy drama trudging through woods and casually stabbing zombies with tiny knives to break up the family arguments?

This smells of a money grab. They're risking diluting their primary zombiefest with a copycat zombiefest and sinking them both.

Of course, they could take an entirely different approach and have the primary theme of this one be finding out the cause and cure of the infection. That's an area which the original has vowed to avoid, but might make a more interesting type of show. Or at least somewhat different.

Wouldn't "Fear The Dead" be a more succinct and effective title? Or do they think people are so dumb they won't watch it unless you put the walking dead in the title.

No.

Fear the dead means fear the zombies. Fear the walking dead is about fearing the people left as they pointed out the living people are the walking dead.

Titles only have to literally make sense when you assume your audience is literally too stupid to figure out what a show is about by watching it. Especially when the show is a spin-off set in the same universe.

In any any case "Fear The Walking Dead" is still a crappy and unimaginative title.

First promo released.

Brief, but I think it will be refreshing to see things from the beginning.

I'm looking forward to seeing the beginning of the sickness. I also hope the series is more concentrated in the city instead of wandering aimlessly on roads through the woods.

They could still make it work.

Or they could just call it: 'The Other AMC Zombie Show'. Subtitled: 'But We Don't Call Them Zombies Either'.

I thing that about sums it up.

I think what matters is whether this show knows what its themes are.

TWD was about how humans change under unbearable stress. About what moral standards can bend, which ones can break, and which ones define the difference between human and... not. These themes were there in the comics, and they transferred intact to the TV show.

If FTWD is just more of the same, well, maybe there's enough audience to sustain it. But I hope it has its own heartbeat.

Wide Awake

on the Edge

of the World

I'm not crazy about the title either, but I guess it's better than "The Walking Dead: Los Angeles SVU"

Would anyone happen to know if the title comes from the comics?

The new show has nothing to do with the comics and it a completely new series/take. Created by Kirkman is the only thing related to the comics.
