'Humans' on AMC

Premieres Sun., June 28 at 9/8c

Quote:
A New Original Series

Humans, a bold new eight-part drama series from AMC, Channel 4 and Kudos, is set in a parallel present where the latest must-have gadget for any busy family is a 'Synth'
- a highly-developed robotic servant eerily similar to its live counterpart.

Written by British writing partnership Sam Vincent and Jonathan Brackley (Spooks, Spooks: The Greater Good), Humans is based on the award-winning Swedish sci-fi
drama Real Humans.

Humans, which stars William Hurt, Katherine Parkinson, Tom Goodman-Hill, Colin Morgan, Rebecca Front, Neil Maskell, and Gemma Chan, recently finished filming in and
around London. The series will premiere on AMC this summer (2015).

This looks promising. I'm always in for any AMC drama. The only time I've been let down in recent years was Low Winter Sun.

Eh, I don't know. This is mostly a Channel Four show and they don't have a great rep for drama. Their sitcom output is much better.

Which is probably why I can't see Katherine Parkinson in anything but this now.

If this was on Syfy I'd pass -- been there, done that, over and over. But being as how this is AMC's first foray into sci-fi, I've got to try it on for size.

Yes, and I also remember The Stepford Wives

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0327162/

(a remake, which I actually preferred)

Were either version funded by AMC?

My very humble setup:
Man Cave:Vizio E500i-A1 "Smart TV" (50-in 1080p 120Hz LED/LCD, has Netflix app.), Sony BDP-S3100 Blu-ray player, Roku N1000 (original model), PC (Windows 7), Comcast Internet (120Mbps/12Mbps).
Bedroom:LG 32LV3400-UA TV (32-in 768p 60Hz LED/LCD), HD DVR (Motorola RNG200N), Xfinity Comcast cable (Digital Preferred Plus), DVD/VHS player.

While American audiences, myself included, know channel 4 mainly for comedy, ie Father Ted, Black Books, Peep Show, Green Wing and Spaced they have pulled off some great dramatic series. Misfits and Utopia come to mind.

Early Misfits and all of Utopia were very good, it's really too bad they killed Utopia after just two series.

Yup, and they didn't even release the second series on Blu-ray, which was too bad as the photography style in this series looked spectacular.

Humans premiered to very good ratings on Channel 4 in the UK last night.

I've watched the Swedish version (Äkta Människor = Real Humans/People), and the English version holds up pretty well. Different but similar.

Great, another Sunday night show, to go along with everything else I like to watch. Thank goodness I upgraded to a six tuner DVR. Two tuners just don't cut it anymore.

What, don't they know there are actually 6 other nights in the week? What are they, chopped liver?

Only 8 eps.

Though there could be further seasons since the show got good ratings in the UK.

Did a "sneak preview" and it's the best thing out of the UK I've seen since "Utopia". It even has Neil Maskell from "Utopia" in it. I'm wondering how I missed the original Swedish version "Real Humans" even though it supposedly played on Netflix last year. Folks who saw the Swedish version think this remake is better.

The show topic ("Singularity") is very hot right now and I applaud that AMC is showing the Channel 4 series rather than commissioning yet another "remake." OTOH, David Fincher seems to be taking his sweet time with the HBO version of "Utopia" and there have already been several shows based on that topic in the interim.

Andy Greenwald's piece on the Grantland site is what convinced me to give Humans a shot. I think Greenwald frequently has excellent insights. Read his piece, its interesting.

Not sure I agree that the UK version is better. Have watched both seasons of the Swedish version and the first few eps of the UK version. Think the 'look' of the Swedish show was better. Little details like the Hubots not blinking, and the overall 'present-day-but-different' feel being stronger in the original. Also some of the UK acting is a bit... err...

I probably have a slightly different view as I'm a Swedish-speaking Brit - so don't have the subtitle issue that some people may have with the original.

I can't compare as it looks like Swedish version has disappeared for the time being. And it was on the Netflix Sweden not US.
