'Preacher' on AMC

Premieres 2016

Preacher, based on the DC/Vertigo comic series, tells the story of Jesse Custer (Dominic Cooper),
a small town preacher at his faith’s end, who becomes imbued with the word of God. Joining Custer
is his ex-girlfriend Tulip (Ruth Negga), the rowdy vampire Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun), Jesse’s right-hand
Emily (Lucy Griffiths), and the ever-controversial Arseface (Ian Colletti).

Jeez, you're getting an early thread start on this one!

I remain to be convinced this will live up to the potential. I remember seeing the comic twenty years ago and have memories of it being both cool and totally f-up. I'm not holding my breath that it can work on AMC when even HBO let it go.

The fact the teaser avoids any mentions of supernatural stuff is not a good sign.

Lol. Well, if AMC is releasing a trailer I figure why not start a thread. Besides, you know the old nursery rhyme, the early preacher gets the coldest grape.

It seems they're trying to keep it faithful to the comic. Seth Rogan is directing the first episode. He doesn't seem to mind rocking the PC boat. Plus, you can't go wrong with Arseface.

Ian Colletti plays Eugene Root aka Arseface

Until we see Arseface we don't if they'll get it right or not. How arse-y will it be? Just cheeks? Will they go full sphincter? Will he be just more of a cheeky Buttface?

No matter what they do with Arseface the show will still get complaints just from the premise. I'm sure when the AMC marketing machine gets moving closer to premiere, people will notice and tell others to start complaining. How much AMC toned it down is going to be fun to watch given the inevitable backlash.

I'm interested in how well AMC make the some of the religious supernatural ideas seem fresh - if they exist. Supernatural "borrowed" a good chunk from the Preacher mythology as they did with Hellblazer, so it will be another case of "Supernatural did it on TV first." AMC will not make the show more sweary or naked so that only leaves violence and Supernatural already do pretty well in the blood content.

edit: looking at the latest pics it seems AMC did tone down Arseface. He really is just more of a Buttface now. Looks pretty lame compared to the HBO test makeup that was floating around.

Lol. Here's a pic of Arseface during a break in shooting. They didn't go full sphincter.
Spoiler!

Didn't Constantine and Dominion blur the lines of the super natural and religion? Perhaps to a lesser degree. I dunno, I was always fine with it. Now don't beat me over the head with a toadstool, but I've never seen a single episode of Supernatural. Actually I have seen the beginning because my DVR snags a minute or two after Arrow. So it's all new on tv to me.

Here's a link talking about some of the differences between the show and comic.

http://www.filmdivider.com/9758/amcs...-the-original/

Quote:
Preacher‘s problems lie more with its distinct sensibilities. This series is filled with themes and scenes that
can live happily in a Vertigo comic, away from the spotlight, but which seem likely to attract immeasurable
controversy for anyone who dares bring them to a wider audience. The the problem facing anyone adapting
Preacher for TV, as exec producers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg are in the process of doing for AMC, is in
trying to retain the original’s unique spirit and style while shedding some of the more ‘difficult’ elements.

Constantine barely had time to delve into that and like Supernatural Dominion was so low rated and barely publicized that the public ignored it. The greater the publicity the greater the chance someone will notice and feel slighted and encourage others to do the same - even if they have never seen the show.

Supernatural borrowed lots of themes from Preacher and when the show creator left they really went to town. So they've had multiple seasons of rogue angels killing humans and other angels, God leaving Heaven, multiple seasons searching for Him, other beings calling out God for being an "absentee landlord" and trying to become ruler of Heaven, people being possessed by various angelic forces, heavenly factions at war and allying with demons, priests who are demons, various human cults fighting for one supernatural religious ideology or another etc. The show has really squeezed the last drops out of those storylines, but keep the stale remains around anyway.

What lines are those? Faith in a god-made-flesh whose believers eat him for breakfast every Sunday morning has to be just as weird to a "pagan" as anything they believe is to a Christian.

The trailer looks good, but this pic is as ridiculous as the concept of a character called "Arseface."

It is just a nickname. Slightly more catchy than "Dudewhoblewhisfaceoffwithashotgunman"

The AMC makeup currently makes him look like he just forgot his dentures though.

Was great to see Constantine on Arrow last night.

Always wanted to start Supernatural. But there's like 56 seasons of it. Been on forever. May be one day.

Just watch most of the episodes up to the end of season 5 when Kripke really ended the show and before others took turns to slowly drain the life out of it. Retconning and killing all the good characters constantly.

Season six onwards just watch the episodes relating to the Men of Letters and those that sound funny. You'll save a lot of time and a lot of repetition.

They premiered the pilot at SXSW. It's getting good reviews. Preacher will debut on Sunday, May 22nd following the Fear the Walking Dead mid-season finale.

"Preacher" Pilot Sports An Amazing Cameo

Quote:
...a montage that includes none other than Tom Cruise
standing outside a Scientologist church. He explodes as well. Producer Evan
Goldberg tells the mag: "It's amazing, no one said anything! We kept waiting for
somebody to say 'no' and now it's too late."

You'll get to see it for yourself when "Preacher" premieres May 22nd.

All the reviews pretty much say the same thing: just watch it! I read the comics quite a while ago and have forgotten much of the details. Will record.

Uh, what sort of crap did I just watch? I don't have much idea of what's going on, no connection to the characters, and no interest in tuning in again. It's like Pulp Fiction or Memento without the aha moments tying it all together.

I enjoyed the pilot and look forward to more. The barroom fight was scene was great. I couldn't understand half of what the Irish guy was saying. Guess I need to switch to Jameson. The universal Irish translator.

I have a hunch that he doesn't often say anything that benefits from translation. Pretty much all BS, but he sure is a fun vampire.

He drank blood, he's worried about being in the sun. The guy was dumping, what you could only guess is holy water on him. Also the old timey weapons. Also the fact that he jumped from an airplane with no parachute, disintegrated on impact and ate a cow to rejuvenate. It's pretty standard vampire stuff.

I made the assumption when he poured blood out of the impaled bottle. Then when he jumped out of the airplane, nailed the coffin shut on that assumption. When he was talking about flying toward the sun, I had no idea what that was about. I figured he was just noticing a direction change.
