2016 Rio Olympic Games on NBC

I'm looking forward to the beautiful vistas that should come with this year's Olympic Games broadcasts on the networks of NBC.

Comcast, owner of NBC, looks like it's in a hurry to show off Rio and the games to their full potential. Word is they're trying to rush through an HDR-capable box by "mid-year 2016":

"The goal, according to evp/gm of video service for Comcast Cable Matt Strauss, is to offer full UltraHD experiences. That’s why instead of launching a 4K set-top box, 'we are pivoting more towards a HDR [high dynamic range] box' around mid-year 2016, Strauss told us."

I love the Olympics and NBC does a really great job broadcasting them. Since it will be closer to our time zones hopefully we'll be able to see much more of the action live instead of tape-delay.

Meh, they still save all of the "good" stuff for prime time to get the most ratings. Plus they can control the narratives by cutting out all of the lesser-known or less important (as determined by NBC) athletes. SMH.

NBC affiliate sucks in my market, but OTA 4K would likely solve that. Just not in time for Rio.

My NBC affiliate is the only one who doesn't give me issues as far as PQ goes. CBS, ABC and Fox make me want to yank my hair out sometimes.

I agree that Brazil will be a great backdrop for the Olympics but I think NBC is terrible at broadcasting them...the announcers are fine but the way they make everything about the USA is very annoying...the Olympics are about the entire world and not just the USA...I also hate that they time-delay a lot of the events to broadcast it in prime time...I really want to see another network get the rights to broadcast the Olympics but it seems NBC has it locked up for the foreseeable future

When the Olympics take place, Rio will be only one hour ahead of Eastern Time, so time-delay shouldn't be too much of a factor this time around. Enjoy it, though, since the 2018, 2020, and 2022 games will all be nighttime Olympics in North America.

The Olympics are in desperate need of reform. They need to find a way to guarantee a safe, unpolluted environment for the athletes and a just way of distributing the money that the games generate.

Sad but true and probably the reason Rio was selected. With the exception of where the rich play, it's an absolute garbage-hole down there and I have no doubt wheelin' and dealin' went on for them to get it.

...against the backdrop of allegations of state sponsored doping. Corrupt or not, attending Olympic events is a unique experience.

The Olympics are such a strange monster. Everybody looks forward to watching them and thinks it's this wonderful event to bring the world together ...

But it seems like no city who knows what they're doing and/or isn't filled with corruption wants to host them. Boston famously REJECTED the Olympics because they realized that it would be too much of a burden for too little gain (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/...b0b8499b188b28).

Those cities who HAVE hosted the Olympics are finding themselves with mounds of debt and a bunch of facilities that they can't use.

The Olympics: That family member that everyone loves to see visit, but nobody wants them to stay at THEIR house.

Boston's an outlier in their rejection of a bid, LA' s pursuing a bid for 2024. Your mountains of debt comment appears unfounded.

From your link:

"The cost of the 2004 Athens Summer Games has been cited as a contributor to the Greek government-debt crisis."

"The Italian government created a lottery game to cover its financial losses."

Unfounded how?

I'll certainly be looking for alternative ways of watching the games. NBC sucks. I want to actually see events live, not watch an hour of human interest stories, an hour of commercials, and an hour of actual sports each night.

Don't the NBC networks stream EVERYTHING live online? It may not be the best quality, but it's something. :-\

Yeah, honestly I'll probably be using the Live Extra app (if they put olympic sports on there?), for when I can watch live. I have it installed on an Nvidia Shield TV. For delayed viewing... well european TV stations usually have far better PQ than in the US.

Olympics-wise yes. During Sochi I either stayed up very late or got up very early to watch curling streamed live.

If curling is a winter Olympic sport, why isn't shuffleboard part of the summer Olympics?

I used to think that curling was just shuffleboard on ice, but then I learned the rules of curling, and that gave me a much greater appreciation of the game. I read a few years back that, due to the Olympic curling coverage on TV, in some suburbs of U.S. cities curling has become a trendy pastime. If the newly acquired love of the game is passed on to children, curling moms could one day be as ubiquitous as soccer moms.

Try a different feed, like Canada for example. When I had Star Choice satellite service I would watch the Olympics on the Canadian broadcast which was much more balanced internationally and it was live, none of this prime time delayed stuff. And if I recall correctly, there were far fewer commercials as well.

I don't know who the sat providers are for Canada anymore but no doubt there's some grey market vendors that can make it happen for us south of the border folks.

As far as Internet, just use a proxy service to spoof your home country and you can pick and choose all sorts of sources for the Games, much like folks do to watch European(and elsewhere) Netflix content here in the States.
