Smile Question: Update about Sportsnet LA on D*, others

I was wondering if there was any updated news about whether the Dodgers Baseball channel will ever end up on Directv. I heard that Time-Warner had decreased their price by about 30% for the Dodgers baseball Channel. Does anyone know whether Directv will pick up this channel soon?

That so-called 30% decrease is only for the first year. After that it goes back up. Sure gets funny when the cable companies treat each other like they treat potential subscribers. Sounds like they all learned that from drug dealers: "The first one is always free."

There were no takers on that first "offer." There has been some additional negotiating since then, but the general consensus is that the impending acquisition of TWC by Charter will postpone any final deal until that ownership change shakes out.

TWC has now made a 6 year offer to spread the price increase over a longer period. Doubt it entices any of the providers to jump. It's still a lot for all in market subs to pay for a single team channel, that most won't watch.

That said, there are discussions on this in the DirecTV master thread and any updates will turn up in HOTP, first. Subscribe to those and, if there's news, it'll come right to your email, phone, etc.

I THINK the going opinion is that DirecTV, Cox, etc have already lost as many subscribers as they're going to over Sportsnet LA and there's little incentive for them to strike a deal NOW. The number of subs they'll get back might only be a fraction of what was lost on a deal that's guaranteed to cost them boatloads more over the years. It seems we're reaching the tipping point on the single-team sports networks.

Walking the fine line between jaw-dropping and a plain ol' yawn.
