The Good Place on NBC

Watched tonight. I thought the show was "cute" perhaps too cute to last. Too many stock type characters. Seems more like all those folks there should not be there, maybe that is the premise. Can't imagine spending eternity with that group.

I actually laughed out loud a couple of times... wasn't expecting that. Also, there was a "Pushing Daisies" vibe to it... the vibrant colors and the direction/camera angles at times... though I don't think anyone having anything to do with that show is on this one.

Also, though it wasn't advertised this way... it has a bit of a Pygmalion feel to it... by which I mean to say, on some level that appears to be the core of the story, no?

I'm a sucker for Kristen Bell so I enjoyed it for her. That said I thought the story was iffy at best, time will tell but I'll probably be around for the duration.

I still have about 20 minutes to finish, didn't hate it, so I will give it more time. I also had some LOL moments, but quite a bit of I already saw that in the previews.

Reminds me of Suburgatory mixed with the fantastic absurdity of Better Off Ted.

So ... I guess ratings will get lower as it is bounced around the schedules to eventually burn off in a forgotten timeslot?

Monday had been advertised as a special preview slot, and tomorrow night (Thursday) it enters its regular time slot. Hopefully it will remain there since, at least at this moment, my recording schedule for Thursday nights is pretty light.

But back to your point: I really don't like special premiere night and then a change in day, not just the time, of the show. And I hate it when a show bounces days and hours, sometimes skipping a week or six, and then gets cut off mid-story due to low ratings. (I am thinking of you, NBC, and Dark Skies (1996-1997).)

That's right! And it has a certain unreal quality to it. (Why not? If someone was high on mushrooms and got 92% of it correct, it would have a certain hallucinational reality to it.)

I found the show somewhat funny, funny enough to keep on recording it for the present. And with a 2.3 rating among adults 18-49, at least initially, it looks good for The Good Place.

I did find myself wondering if Ted Danson's "Michael" is meant to be *that* Michael... you know, famous archangel Michael?

I'm also torn on the premise... if it will turn out to be an actual mistake for her to be there, which means they either want to correct it when they find out OR she teaches them the flaw in their system by becoming a better person given a chance? OR is it, as she suspects, a test... could be a test for her to see what she will do (turn herself in or try and be better)... could be a test for Michael as well, since he says this was his first world on his own.

Interesting their "Siri" insinuated there was access to some creative porn... even though no swearing is allowed in that realm... seems like that would make the porn, shall we say, "different"?

There were enough funny moments for me to keep this on my DVR (like the clown door in her bedroom, or "You know I'm saying 'ash hole' and not 'ash hole', right?").

This show definitely works best as a 30-minute show. I wonder if it was a mistake to run two episodes back-to-back - 2 in a row felt a little much for me.

To top it off, Kristen Bell remains absolutely adorable.

Strongly agreed. I'm pretty sure she has blue eyes but her eyes looked rather dark, almost brown. Contacts?

I didn't think the third episode had much to it and the concept already seems to be wearing thin. The British girl is so annoying (as is her over-emphasized accent) that it might cause me to bail too.

Ted Danson and his assistant are good though and I kind of wish Chidi was the main character instead.

Well she is English, so pretty sure that's just her real accent. She stands almost 5' 11", so quite a tall drink of water.

I caught the episode on video-on-demand (that timeslot was fully booked by the tuners of the DVR) and it looks like next week one of the tuners will be tuned to this show.

But as soon as the show starts feeling repetitious, redundant, and repetitious, I'm out. No shirt!

No it isn't. Her real accent is a lot more relaxed. She used to be a TV presenter so you can find a lot of clips of her on YouTube.

On this show she sounds like someone doing an impersonation of a stereotype Posh Brit. Either she is meant to literally be annoyingly upper class or the show thinks viewers would be too stupid to recognize an English accent.

I watched the first 2 and then had to give up on the 3rd show. It just has no real substance and isn't interesting.

To the extent it is being compared to Pushing Daisies, I ditched that show as well and this show reminded me why.

Quite possibly. By the end of the third episode we now know of two people who think they don't belong there.

Is it possible that what they have isn't "The Good Place", but rather "The In Between Place"?

In any case, right now the show has a Place in my viewing schedule.

Yeah... episode 3 brought in a new wrinkle... perhaps nothing is as it seems. To that end... with silent dude being really talkative there at the end... those annoyed by British girl's voice... MAYBE there's a method to that madness too. Like "what if" she isn't really British, so she's faking an accent very badly to fit in? Could be most of the people there aren't who they are presented to be... except the ethics guy, he seems to be who he is supposed to be... but could be he is the only one!

I watched the first two episodes and found it to be boring. I was a big fan of Pushing Daisies, but unfortunately I think this show is missing the whimsy, creativity and cuteness of that show.

The cuteness wore off after the pilot. Now I see how bad shows can exist -- fanclub worship of big name celebrities. Hollywood works this angle by putting some well-known actors in any show of any quality and expect the fan club to eat it up. Works every time. This show has the Cheer guy and that Kristen girl. The Black List has that actor from the 70's. POI had the Lost guy and the other guy.

Anyway I am out.

Well I'm out. As much as I adore Kristen Bell like Zoe D. on the New Girl I just can't justify a show just on one pretty girl
The rest of this show just doesn't hold up, I hope to Kristen in a better show in the not to distant future.
