Salvation - CBS - Summer 2017

Premieres Wednesday, July 12 at 9 p.m.

Alex Kurtzman is behind CBS's "Scorpion," "Hawaii Five-0," the upcoming "Star Trek: Discovery," and now, "Salvation." The 13-episode first season revolves around the discovery that an asteroid will impact Earth in just six months and the survival of humanity is at stake.

Salvation on CBS

I'm always a sucker for these sci-fi and/or horror summer miniseries' (i.e. Harpers Island, Under the Dome, Zoo). Unfortunately some that are supposed to only be a one and done end up being brought back as a regular series and I immediately lose interest.

That said, I'm really looking forward to this one. Always love the "end of the world" type shows. Guaranteed though, if the ratings allow this to make it through the summer, they'll find a way to extend this into a regular series as well. I mean, there is only a huge asteroid heading towards Earth. Surely they can draw that over seasons, right?

You betcha.

The asteroid will likely achieve a stable orbit where it will create future plot lines, such as:

- Shifting oceans that flood deserts and create deserts where they once were.
- The asteroid will create long stretches of night by blocking the sun.
- Magnetic fields will disrupt compasses and radio signals, making navigation harder.
- The asteroid will destroy satellites for communications, defense and GPS, putting us back to the days before them.
- There will be a massive corporate fight to be the first to mine it for valuable materials.

Yes, absolutely.

1) The show shifts a bit for the following season(s) as only the people who are living under a protective force field dome will survive the impact.

2) The proto-molecule at the center of the asteroid causes it to change course at the last minute and a) crash into Venus where scientist will have to go explore. b) miss the earth on this orbit, but be on target for next summer. c) starts a temporal timeloop where only a few of the characters realize that time is repeating and they need to try something different each loop.

The asteroid is actually a ship, the powers of earth destroy it angering the alien world it came from starting a war.

Or...

The asteroid is actually alive, coming to earth to investigate human life. The earth powers destroy it, angering the asteroids family causing them to attack earth.

Or....

The asteroid is coming closer each episode, in the 13th episode the asteroid comes within earth's orbit, a person (perhaps the President?) is shown waking up in bed, fade to black... was it all a dream? Was it real?

The asteroid is actually a ship looking for extinct whales ...

The asteroid is actually a ship looking for intelligent life, finds none, and sterilizes the planet.

You all are making me quiver, with antici ....................... pation.

I'd say the Sci Fi genre has run out of ideas and needs to go on hiatus. Every new movie and every new TV show is Sci Fi / Fantasy. Reality and Game shows don't count as shows, IMO.

Sigh ......

For crying out loud.....how much dose it cost to purchase the rights to say "Lucifer's Hammer" and adopt that for a mini series. At least in that novel the thing actually hit the planet! What are the odds in"Salvation"?

So someone complains that all the "somewhat likely" things have been tried and so there's no longer any interest in the next version of each thing; and the next person complains about what makes this idea unique, in that it is something that is less than "somewhat likely". I declare that all the confounding precomplaints are effectively cancelled-out by each other.

Such complaints should probably be ignored prior to broadcast, regardless.

There is actually scientific basis for more than one asteroid being possible. We have had number of close calls in the past.

Looking forward to this one. Love a good end-the-world show. The title suggests it won't be end of the world though. Will it be Armageddon or Deep Impact? Will they send Barry over to run really fast around the asteroid and solve everything?

They will send Barry ... White. Then will amplify his voice and break up the asteroid with sound waves!

We got it together, didn't we
We've definitely got our thing together don't we baby
Isn't that nice
I mean really, when really sit and think about it
Isn't it really, really nice.

Once again, Barry White saves the day!

I love these types of shows too, so I will definitely watch.

That said, my hopes are not high. Being on CBS is not good news for the kind of gritty type show I prefer. Seeing the trailer, it already seems too clean and a bit cliche-ridden. But still, it's the type of show I would like so I will definitely be watching ..

Well, it is on CBS. So I suspect what we'll have is an asteroid procedural. Every week there is a new crime involving a murder revolving around the approaching asteroid, with a small sliver of continuity between them. A pair of very attractive but mismatched detectives who don't-play-by-the-rules will investigate, make clever quips, dodge red herrings, and solve the murder in 42 tightly plotted minutes, while waxing philosophic about the approaching cosmic calamity. Gradually, over the course of the show's run, they will fall in love and get married. Their final case will be figuring out how to solve the crime of the asteroid murdering everybody. Then.... they'll have a baby! The show will run for 20 years.

The more promos I see for this, the less I want to watch.

Why does there have to be national security concerns?
Why is what they're about to do considered treason?

Heaven forbid it's as cut and dry as everyone coming together to try and stop the end of the world.

Don't forget, they have to ride around in a really mean looking retro muscle car...

...bonus points if it's an actual vintage muscle car that's either yellow or lime green - or striped with both.

The dialog will be peppered with phrases, such as:

- Zoom in and enhance
- He's our perp
- Confess, it will go better for you.
- I've hacked into the system...
- We traced his credit cards and cell phone usage.
- His alibi held up, he's not our perp...
