The Sinner - USA Network

Based On The International Best-Seller. Premieres 8/2 @ 10/9c

An eight episode close-ended series, The Sinner follows a young mother (Jessica Biel) who, when overcome by an inexplicable fit of rage, commits a startling act of violence and to her horror has no idea why. The event launches an inverted and utterly surprising crime thriller whose driving force is not the “who” or the “what” -- but the “why” -- as an investigator (Bill Pullman) finds himself obsessed with uncovering the woman's buried motive. Together they travel a harrowing journey into the depths of her psyche and the violent secrets hidden in her past.

Just quirky enough to interest me!

"I shall not commit the fashionable stupidity of regarding everything I cannot explain as a fraud." - C.G.Jung

Not sure Jessica Biel can pull something like this off, but I am a Bill Pullman fan, so it get's a shot. This summer's fare is so limited ...

I watched the premier episode and I thought Biel did a pretty good job of it. I'll keep watching. The husband's a piece of work and a mama's boy as Biel pointed out. As for Pullman, yup a fan but now we know how he got those black tips fingernails... ouch..

This MAY fall somewhere between True Detective 1
and "The night of"

rottentomatoes has episode blurbs of a semi promising nature

Well, not bad. Not hard to see what her problem was, right off, but the reveal that
Spoiler!
was an interesting twist.

Some things of note:

The scene where she swam out into the bay, all alone, then going under, reflective of her mental state and nicely filmed.

The woman who was being groped on the beach was so small and childlike ... that was not a coincidence.

The fingernail scene - wow. That could be fun with 9 eps left.

I wanted to check this out but USA Network isn't doing any "free first episode" promos. In fact you need to log in even to watch it on their website. They used to post the first 5 episodes on the site no log in required then log in required for the rest of the series.

We enjoyed it, best part was the twists coming at the end with the reveal, that made us want to tune in.

yeah . . those twists . .

made me think of BB: the sustained tension there was and just "when it couldn't possibly get any worse" you wouldn't see it coming but - it got worse - and it worked-brilliantly

this show, after 2 episodes- just when you think they couldn't think of any (good)way to advance the plot, they just make it more diverse and confusing / diffused with repressed memories, a mother that's a psycho,
daddy is a child abuser (?), a good reflection of the damage religion induced guilt can do. what a mess . . .
and it's not unitl E4 that something might begin to connect the dots in the fog . .

thank Comedy Central for South Park re-runs . . at least you know you're going to hear : I think we learned something here today . ." and you should have

I have struggled through three episodes of The Sinner but it still hasn't achieved critical mass for me. Will at least start Episode 4 but based on what I've seen so far, am not optimistic. I confess, though, that I am far from the biggest fan of either Jessica Biel or Bill Pullman, so consider the source.

It's annoying in that it seems to have the road all laid out for us, yet, the story is traveling along it at a mere 15 mph. I just want to say ... get it into third!

So, is this thing worth watching or not? Seems like not from the comments. I guess I will wait to see the comments / thoughts after it's all been shown.

Good question. Same question I assume most of the folks who are still watching are asking themselves on a weekly basis.

Well, at least they moved the story along in this ep. The sister was the instigator of the the entire fiasco! She got out and got her revenge on her sister, who she hated for no reason other than she was healthy. Manipulative to the end.

I watched the first episode when it aired. Nothing since. The last episode airs on September 20. Sometimes it's better to cut to the chase.

We've watched it all, and have mostly enjoyed it. It's a crazy pile of messed up stuff and non-mainstream human behavior (not what I would have expected from USA). Kind of slow at times, similar to The Killing, but I enjoy shows like that. Take out the commercials the entire series is about 6 hours of content, so not much to lose by seeing it through.

In my experience as a professional painter, and i very often made it all the way back to the truck with out spilling any in the parking lot . . like ALWAYS

However, part of the fun was, removing wallpaper . . . lots of it . . maybe a few square miles worth - doesn't matter how much, depends to whom I'm telling the story . .

LOL

What matters is the TOTALLY BS way the new stuff peeled off the old "Now I member stuff".

A doctor would charged up the butt for a re-paint/ whatever and it would involve removing the old wall paper, fixing the wall, lots of options . .

but certainly not an "easy - just put this slop over it . . just peel it back clean, no glue no unevenness (?) - never happens

And what exactly was the pivotal point / info whereby they ended up at the doctors home anyway?

Guess they needed to just wrap it up.

The new south Park made a much better statement about just everything else that matters in this world.

The detectives determined all the stolen IDs used to write the prescriptions were from colleagues of the doctor (whose son was killed on the beach at the beginning of the series). That little key flew by very quickly in the rush to wrap up the trial sequence. Apparently that led them to believe Cora was treated at the doctor's house after her sister was killed in the clubhouse.

Her sister was not killed. She died of her heart problems. She also died happy...

Most of the questions answered for a "happy" ending, but I found both the main characters to be a bit flat in their performances. I get that they were hurt as children and had retreated into themselves as a result, but it was a bit much having flat actors, a slow plot reveal, and not enough backstory on him to cement the connection between them.

His history was glossed over, with barely the hint of his issues via the dominatrix relationship. That relationship should have been explored further, as a plot device to discover more about him. Really, the only interesting thing in the entire early story (other than the stabbing itself). Instead, they spent way too much time on the relationship with his wife, which I found to be annoying and unrevealing (yeah, he's uncommunicative and unresponsive, whahhhhh, whahhhh). WE GET IT!

Overall, less than it could have been ... if the writer had made better choices, it had a better pace, and actors capable of emoting through the facade they lived behind.

For an 8 episode series, I thought it was very good. Contrary to above , I thought the performances were very good (not flat at all). I found the finale both interesting and a little wanting, but overall I thought they did a really good job with the source material. My wife loved it too ..
